The key commandments for doing Business in Russia

- Russia possesses many opportunities being the world's largest country in terms of territory, possessing vast natural resources, having a population of over 150 million people, having had one of the world's fastest GDP growth rates of 7.5% from 2001-2005, and having less competition in some industries than is the case in many countries due to the economic transformation Russia is undergoing. However, Russia also has a dynamic, unique, challenging, and sometimes difficult to understand business environment that has caused problems for many foreign firms. As a result, it is risk rather than opportunity that many associate with Russia. There is no denying that doing business in Russia is not for the faint at heart. However, the difficulty to understand Russia's business environment can also be an advantage as it serves as an entry barrier that assists those who do enter and learn how to operate effectively to reap higher returns. Based on interviews with executives from 36 foreign firms operating in Russia and supplemented by our extensive experience in Russia as executives, consultants, executive trainers, and researchers over the last fifteen years, this article suggests eight commandments that will enable foreign firms to avoid mistakes and skip the trial and error learning many of their predecessors have had to go through and achieve success in Russia more rapidly. Indeed, this article suggests that risks can be mitigated and Russia presents good opportunities for skillfully-designed foreign investment projects that take into account local specifics.

Formation of NaCl through radiative association : Computations accounting for non-adiabatic dynamics

- The radiative association (RA) rate constant is computed for the formation of the diatomic sodium chloride (NaCl) molecule in the temperature interval 1 K–30 K. At these temperatures, RA of NaCl through non-adiabatic dynamics is important. A scattering program has been implemented to carry out calculations of RA cross sections, accounting for coupled dynamics on the lowest ionic and the lowest neutral diabatic 1Σ+ states. The study shows that the non-adiabatic treatment gives a cross section that exceeds that of conventional adiabatic dynamics by one to four orders of magnitude. The contribution to the RA rate constant from Na and Cl approaching each other in the A1Π state has also been computed using an established quantum mechanical method. Ab initio data from the literature have been used for the potential energy curves, the diabatic coupling, and the electric dipole moments of NaCl.

Imaging congestion with a pocket ultrasound device - prognostic implications in patients with chronic heart failure.

- AIMS: Venous congestion is common in patients with chronic heart failure (HF). We used a pocket-sized ultrasound imaging device (PID) to assess the patient's congestive status and related our findings to prognosis.METHODS AND RESULTS: 104 consecutive outpatients from an HF outpatient clinic were studied. Interstitial lung water (ILW), pleural effusion (PE) and the diameter of the vena cava inferior (VCI) were assessed using a PID. ILW was assessed by demonstration of B-lines (comet tail artefact (CTA). Out of the 104 patients, 28 had CTA, and eight had PE. Median VCI diameter was 18 mm, ±14/22 mm (quartiles). Each of these parameters correlated weakly (r= 0.26-0.37, p< 0.05) with the HF biomarker NT-proBNP. During the median follow-up time of 530 days, 14 hospitalizations deaths and 7 deaths were registered. Findings of CTA, PE or a composite of both, increased the risk of death or hospitalization (hazard ratio 3-4, p< 0.05). After adjustment for age, cardiac systolic function and NT-proBNP, this difference remained significant for CTA alone and CTA + PE combined, but not for PE alone.CONCLUSION: By using a handheld ultrasound device, signs of pulmonary congestion could be demonstrated. When found, these had a significant prognostic impact in clinically stable HF.
