  • Developing a Method for Identifying Improvisation Strategies in Jazz Duos
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proc. of the 14th International Symposium on CMMR. - Marseille Cedex : Springer International Publishing. - 9791097498016 ; , s. 482-489
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The primary purpose of this paper is to describe a method to investigate the communication process between musicians performing improvisation in jazz. This method was applied in a first case study. The paper contributes to jazz improvisation theory towards embracing more artistic expressions and choices made in real life musical situations. In jazz, applied improvisation theory usually consists of scale and harmony studies within quantized rhythmic patterns. The ensembles in the study were duos performed by the author at the piano and horn players (trumpet, alto saxophone, clarinet and trombone). Recording sessions involving the ensembles were conducted. The recording was transcribed using software and the produced score together with the audio recording was used when conducting in-depth interviews, to identify the horn player’s underlying musical strategies. The strategies were coded according to previous research.

  • On the T-3-Gowdy symmetric Einstein-Maxwell equations
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Annales de l'Institute Henri Poincare. Physique theorique. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1424-0637 .- 1424-0661. ; 7:1, s. 1-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently, progress has been made in the analysis of the expanding direction of Gowdy spacetimes. The purpose of the present paper is to point out that some of the techniques used in the analysis can be applied to other problems. The essential equations in the case of the Gowdy spacetimes can be considered as a special case of a wider class of variational problems. Here we are interested in the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to this class of equations. Two particular members arise when considering the T-3-Gowdy symmetric Einstein-Maxwell equations and when considering T-3-Gowdy symmetric IIB superstring cosmology. The main result concerns the rate of decay of a naturally defined energy. A subclass of the variational problems can be interpreted as wave map equations, and in that case one gets the following picture. The non-linear wave equations one ends up with have as a domain the positive real line in Cartesian product with the circle. For each point in time, the wave map can thus be seen as a loop in some Riemannian manifold. As a consequence of the decay of the energy mentioned above, the length of the loop converges to zero at a specific rate.

  • The police patrols and children experiencing domestic violence
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Police Practice & Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1561-4263 .- 1477-271X. ; 17:5, s. 434-447
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using data from a study on police officers' encounters with domestic violence victims and a study on children experiencing domestic violence, this article examines how officers decide whether and how to communicate with children in emergency situations, and how children experience these encounters. Officers' views on such communication diverge; usually, communication is motivated by the need to determine next actions. Children recall little communication and describe officers as faceless, nameless and genderless. The authors argue for recognizing the preventive role of officers on emergency calls. Official policies and guidelines should formally acknowledge and clarify the importance of communication with children.

  • A Variational data assimilation scheme and its use of meteorological observations
  • 1999
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Meteorological data assimilation is the process by which a model simulation of the atmosphere is corrected by observations. In operational weather forecasting, this is done in near real-time, to provide accurate initial conditions for numerical forecasts. The accuracy of the forecasts depends crucially on the accuracy of the data assimilation. The increase in available computing power and the theoretical advances in data assimilation methods have recently enabled the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) to develop and introduce operationally a new data assimilation scheme (4D-Var), based on variational methods. The four papers of this thesis present recent developments that have exploited some of the most promising possibilities of 4D-Var with respect to observation usage. They have all been incorporated in operational practice at ECMWF.Variational data assimilation schemes have several advantages that make the new scheme more flexible than earlier schemes with respect to the use of observations. The introduction of 4D-Var has enabled the effective use of a wider range of meteorological observations than previously possible. This includes, as will be demonstrated in this thesis, both conventional observations and satellite measurements. In the first paper we develop a method for the use of satellite radiance observations, and investigate the aspects of 4D-Var that make the scheme particularly well suited for the assimilation of data from a growing variety of space based observing systems. In the second paper we develop a variational quality control method. The third paper investigates the flow-dependence of the 4D-Var response to time series of surface pressure observations in the vicinity of a rapidly developing storm. The final paper presents a diagnostic method for tuning of the 4D-Var system.

  • Ongoing Crestal Bone Loss around ImplantsSubjected to Computer-Guided FlaplessSurgery and Immediate Loading Usingthe All-on-4® Concept
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1523-0899 .- 1708-8208. ; 17:5, s. 831-843
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The All-on-4® concept is widely applied for full-arch rehabilitations, using two tilted and two axially loadedimplants in order to overcome anatomical constraints.Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the survival and individual success of implants immediately loaded with anAll-on-4 full-arch screw-retained prosthetic bridge i n fully edentulous mandibles or maxillae over up to 3 years.Materials and Methods: In total, 20 patients with atrophic jaws (9 maxillae, 11 mandibles) were treated with computer-guided flapless surgery and immediately provided with a provisional bridge. The final prosthesis was delivered after6 months. In total, 80 TiUnite™ Brånemark implants were placed. Radiographs were taken after surgery and 1 and 3 yearslater. Results: A 3-year survival rate of 100% was seen for all implants, both in lower and in upper jaw. None of the temporaryor definite prostheses were lost over the follow-up period of 3 years. After 1 year, the mean bone loss was 1.13 mm (SD 0.94;range −0.1 to 3.8), and after 3 years, it was 1.61 mm (SD 1.40; range 0 to 5). The mean bone loss between the 1-year and3-year follow-ups was 0.48 mm (SD 0.66; range −1.2 to 3.6). This difference was statistically significant (p < .001), indicativeof ongoing bone loss. Twenty-six percent of the implants had bone loss above 1.5 mm after 1 year, but after 3 years, 30%of the implants had already lost more than 1.9 mm.Conclusion: The implant and prosthetic survival was 100%, and patients benefited from the All-on-4 treatment. However, unacceptable ongoing bone loss was seen in 49.2% of the patients; this may be a warning sign for future problems and needsclinical attention. Overloading and surgery-related aspects need to be investigated as potential explanations.

  • Addressing model complexity in automotive system development : Selection of system model elements for allocation of requirements
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: MODELSWARD 2016. - : SCITEPRESS - Science and and Technology Publications. - 9789897581687 ; , s. 168-175
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modern automotive embedded systems are developed by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) together with multiple suppliers. A key problem for a supplier is to allocate an OEM’s requirements specification to their own subsystem design. This is a difficult manual task especially on complex systems and it requires expert knowledge about the system design. To address this problem, this paper presents a design science research to develop and evaluate a Requirements Allocation Assistant tool (RAA). The tool provides functionality to search through and filter requirements and system models to enable efficient requirements allocation even in the presence of complexity. RAA is built on top of the EATOP/Eclipse framework using EAST-ADL as system modelling language. The tool was evaluated and validated during a qualitative usability study with 17 engineers active in the Swedish automotive industry. Key findings are that searching is used to learn about a system, whereas filtering is used to narrow down a set of candidate elements of the system design. Engineers request further support in narrowing down a set of candidate elements and in checking that an allocation is correct.
