  • Autonomy-based arguments against physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia : A critique
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Medicine, Health care and Philosophy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1386-7423 .- 1572-8633. ; 16:2, s. 225-230
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Respect for autonomy is typically considered a key reason for allowing physician assisted suicide and euthanasia. However, several recent papers have claimed this to be grounded in a misconception of the normative relevance of autonomy. It has been argued that autonomy is properly conceived of as a value, and that this makes assisted suicide as well as euthanasia wrong, since they destroy the autonomy of the patient. This paper evaluates this line of reasoning by investigating the conception of valuable autonomy. Starting off from the current debate in end-of-lifecare, two different interpretations of how autonomy is valuable is discussed. According to one interpretation, autonomy is a personal prudential value, which may provide a reason why euthanasia and assisted suicide might be against a patient’s best interests. According to a second interpretation, inspired by Kantian ethics, being autonomous is unconditionally valuable, which may imply a duty to preserve autonomy. We argue that both lines of reasoning have limitations when it comes to situations relevant for end of life care. It is concluded that neither way of reasoning can be used to show that assisted suicide or euthanasia always is impermissible.

  • The Organization of Non-Profit Activities
  • 1999
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper is concerned with the different forms of organizations which emerge in a capitalist market society. A theory is presented which primarily aims to describe and explain the repertoire of organizational forms which occur in such economies. In this paper, there is an emphasis on the theoretical forms which are particularly important for the analysis and understanding of the ideell sector, a Swedish term roughly corresponding to the 'non-profit sector' (the preferred terminology in the United States), and as the 'voluntary' sector (a preferred name in United Kingdom). This analysis is addressed to scholars who are interested in the theoretical aspects of organizing, and consequently have certain insights into institutional economics, socio-economics, and organization theory. Particularly, it is aimed at actors engaged in exploring the ideell sector. There is very little information about how these ideell (non-profit; voluntary) organizations "work", that is to say how they are managed, organized and how they reproduce themselves. This article represents an attempt to correct this deficiency to some extent, in the form of a theoretical framework developed in this area by the author over the past decade (Sjöstrand, e.g. 1985, 1992, 1993c, and 1997). This theory primarily aims to describe and explain the repertoire of organizations, which emerge in a society and it permits comparative analyses of the characteristics of these various organizational forms. At the same time, this theory is intended to provide a basis for describing the action rationalities of different organizations.

  • The Organization of Nonprofit Activities
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Voluntas (Manchester, England). - : Kluwer Academic/Plenum Press. - 1573-7888 .- 0957-8765. ; 11:3, s. 199-216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the repertoire of organizational forms in Western societies in order to assess the nonprofit sector's distinctiveness. A repertoire of six different ideal type constructs is presented adding to and reformulating existing theories, which have primarily focused on the "market" and the "firm." This new extended theoretical platform builds both on theories discussing market, organization, and governmental "failures" and on approaches where homo economicus is replaced by homo complexicus and transactions by interactions. This effort aims at making the nonprofit (or voluntary) sector in society both more visible and theoretically substantiated. At the end of this paper, the theoretical framework is applied by analyzing empirical nonprofit organizations.

  • Designing Information Systems : A pragmatic account
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Information technology (IT) plays an increasingly important role for individuals, organizations, markets, and society as a whole. IT systems are artefacts (human made objects) designed for various purposes. Given the multiple-purpose characteristics of computers, such artefacts may, for example, support workflows, perform advanced calculations, support human communication and socialization, enable delivery of services and digital products, facilitate learning, or simply entertain. The diverging application areas for IT present a challenge to designers who, as a consequence, have to address increasingly divergent design situations. There have been numerous arguments suggesting that the IT artefact has been 'taken for granted', and needs to be understood and conceptualized better within information systems (IS) research. This thesis is based on the pragmatist notion that one important value of IT resides in its potential to support human collaboration. Such a belief has implications for the development of (1) knowledge aimed for action, change and improvement; (2) knowledge about actions, activities and practices; and (3) knowledge through action, experimentation and exploration. A view of the IT artefact is outlined, showing it as part of a social and technological context. IT artefact design is explained in relation to the induction of social change. The notion of stakeholder-centric design is advocated, along with practical theory to promote a situated understanding of use qualities and design ideals. A set of meta-theoretical implications for design-oriented IS research is proposed. The research process consisted of five inquiries into different IT-reliant social contexts. In the first four inquiries, social and communicative qualities of IT artefacts were assessed, governed primarily by Dewey's notion of inquiry as a theory of knowledge. The fifth inquiry was a large-scale action research project, including interventions into the social setting, and the design and implementation of a new IT artefact into that setting.

  • Designing Software for Online Randomized Controlled Trials
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Next Wave of Sociotechnical Design. - Cham : Springer Nature. - 9783030824044 - 9783030824051 ; , s. 197-208
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Researchers in psychosocial care paid an increasing interest in providing treatment online, e.g., self-help and cognitive behavioral therapy for patients with different conditions. Consequently, they need to design both complex interventions and conduct research online. There is little research on how to design appropriate support for complex online randomized controlled trials (RCTs) – a prevalent approach for investigating the effectiveness of psychological treatment. In this paper, we report from a decade-long design science research initiative conducted within an eHealth research environment. Drawing from the design experiences and literature, we present design reflections and conceptual models supporting the design of software for online RCTs. We evaluate the ideas by accounting for the long-term use of the system by various research groups, signaling proof-of-concept, proof-of-use, and proof-of-value. Our results contribute to designers of online RCT solutions and add to the discourse on tool support for design science research.

  • Designing Software for Web-based Psychosocial Care : Longitudinal Design Science Research in U-CARE
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. - 1529-3181. ; 54:45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses the design of software for web-based psychosocial care – an increasing and highly relevant societal issue. The paper explores two primary research questions: 1) What design principles should guide the creation of web-based software for online psychological support, and 2) How can design science research facilitate the development and assessment of innovative eHealth solutions? Our research – a tailored DSR approach – was conducted over a 10+ year period within the multi-disciplinary research programme U-CARE. As information systems researchers, we worked as researchers and developers, in tight collaboration with psychologists, economists, medical doctors, nurses, and other key stakeholders. Through this process, we continually reflected and abstracted our experiences into design principles and DSR methodology. In response to the first research question, we introduce a set of design principles for web-based psychosocial support, shaped by the overarching LAME DSR approach. These principles include malleability for adaptability and sustainability, privacy and accountability in online environments, and a focus on stakeholder-specific functionalities like therapist dashboards and smooth authentication processes. In response to the second research question, we present the LAME DSR approach and an informed argument concerning its role in the establishment of a strategic, high-impact research environment.

  • Didactic modelling for eco-reflexive Bildung
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Bildung is the German and international term for an educational-philosophical key idea. In the German/Danish/Norweigan Didaktik-tradition the notion of Bildung is central. Especially Klafki (2000) has been central in consolidating this relationship. He identified two main orientations in the understanding of the concept of Bildung: material and formal Bildung. Furthermore, he also argued for a position mixing these two views and called it categorical Bildung. More recently, for example Kemp (2005) applied the thinking of Klafki on ideas about our latemodern society. Furthermore, he discussed views of the “world citizen”. In teaching practice Didaktik-models can be used both as tools for analysis and as tools in planning of teaching (e.g. Jank & Meyer, 2018). Klafki developed Didaktik-models for Bildung-oriented Didaktik. For the science subjects (especially chemistry) professor Ingo Eilks from University of Bremen with coworkers have formulated and empirically evaluated a framework for socio-critical and Bildung-oriented science teaching (e.g. Marks et al., 2014). I myself have together with especially Eilks further elaborated on the Bildung-concept in relation to the science subjects (e.g. Sjöström, 2013; Sjöström et al., 2017). Also, for chemistry, I together with professor Vicente Talanquer from University of Arizona recently discussed the consequences of sustainability ideas on chemical thinking and action (Sjöström & Talanquer, 2018). Such perspectives – about the curriculum subjects’ relationship to sustainability issues, democracy, citizenship, action etc. – is relevant beyond chemistry and science education (Sjöström, 2018). In this paper I will take my thinking and writing about Bildung-oriented science education as a point of departure and suggest core ideas that are common for most curriculum subjects. Such ideas can inform our understanding of Bildung-oriented general subject-Didaktik. The latter can be seen as the meeting point between different research areas of subject-Didaktik (Sjöström, 2017; 2018). When Didaktik-models are formulated, used and/or developed it is called didactic modelling. In this paper focus is on Didaktik-models and didactic modelling in support of the development of categorical Bildung-perspectives in curriculum subjects and – as a consequence – the development of eco-reflexive Bildung for citizenship (Sjöström et al., 2016). Implications for research in subject-Didaktik will also be discussed.
