    • Two new compositions by Anders Hagberg, commissioned by Carolina Jonsson for the two-part video, Gränsland 1 (2021), and Gränsland 2 (2023). The thematic starting point for these videos is a series of generic sculptures of children created in the 1940’s and 50’s. At this time just after the war, public art was often used to educate people and create a common narrative for a better future. The children in these sculptures, mostly naked young girls seen through the eyes of male artists, became symbols of hope for a better tomorrow, but also a symbol of health and the natural order of things. These sculptures got Carolina Jonsson thinking about how she, as a female artist, would choose to portray a child today, and how a child today would want to be portrayed. The answer, she realized, was anything but simple. In a time when we are surrounded by an unprecedented flow of images, and people´s self-awareness is at an all-time high, the child's encounter with the camera becomes ambivalent. The pure joy of a child playing is present, but also glimpses of insecurity, self-awareness, and self-control. This becomes especially visible in the second part, Gränsland 2, which was filmed earlier this year. Here the child has become a teenager. The teenager’s desire to be a child and to play is still apparent, but not without a conflict of interest, making the playing soft and beautiful as well as aggressive and frustrated. The music for Gränsland 1, is based on the rhythm and joy of the dancing child. The pulse and articulation were creating the starting point for a solo improvisation on Bass flute. Gränsland 2 is a soundscape for acoustic instruments, samples and electronics which has darker rhythmic elements with an underlying threat.

  • 2009
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The present study critically examines the zealous building of 470 new parish churches in Sweden in 1850–1890; mainly replacing older churches in Västergötland, Småland and Scania; mainly new sites in Norrland. The primary source material is the church itself, meticulously examined in the fi eld and from archives, comparative analysis, the systemati-sation of formal elements and interpretation of architectural expression, characterisation of locations, plans, interiors and exteriors. The roles of initiators, architects, state/church authorities and building entrepreneurs are scrutinized as also liturgical demands, practical matters and the effects of growing populations and increased industrialisation leading to larger congregations, innovative building materials and new fashions. The results are extensively substantiated by analytical drawings, photographs, maps and tables of collated data, all new and by the author; fully availing of his training as architect, art-historian and Sockenkyrkoprojektet researcher. 18 churches are detailed in a representative sample. The parish church is its own art-historical genre. Each church is the sum of its parts interacting with its environs. When formal elements reoccur this refl ects practical solutions not always apparent from the written sources. A divergence between theory and practice is emphasised. Conforming rules, offi cial vetting and reuse of old drawings by the architects of Överintendentsämbetet were countered by master builders who deviated from approved designs, inspired by neighbouring churches. A spirit of architectural freedom fl ourished, encouraging creativity and novel architectural motifs. Traditional stylistic terminology is not applicable to these parish churches. Historical associations may have been sought, but were subsidiary to other demands of the building process. Individual architects and joint building ventures are identifi ed. Three ideals are isolated, variously utilizing form, light and height with a fashionable emphasis on spaciousness, the sacral and propriety. Today, increased secularisation and falling rural populations make these over-large churches an endangered cultural heritage.

  • Experiences of Swedish military medical personnel in combat zones : adapting to competing loyalties
  • 2014
  • In: Military medicine. - : Association of Military Surgeons of the U S. - 0026-4075 .- 1930-613X. ; 8:179, s. 821-826
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: The aim of this qualitative study is to explore the Swedish military personnel's experience of what it means to perform a caring role in a combat zone. This study assesses the challenges faced by military medical personnel in the context of a combat zone. METHODS: The design was descriptive with a qualitative inductive approach. Twenty military medical personnel (physicians, nurses, and combat lifesavers) were interviewed individually. They had been involved in international military operations between 2009 and 2012. This study was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. RESULTS: The analysis produced four categories: being in a primarily noncaring organization, caring in emotionally charged relationships, lacking an open dialog about expectations of killing and having to prioritize scarce resources. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that medical personnel easily adapt to a military setting. They care but also perform other tasks when they are in a combat zone. The medical personnel want to give care to host nation but use drugs they can spare.
