  • Bioenergy and Land Use Change-State of the Art
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Advances in Bioenergy: The Sustainability Challenge. - Oxford, UK : John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. - 9781118957875 - 9781118957844 ; , s. 249-271
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The dedicated production of biomass crops and the collection of residues in agriculture and forestry can lead to undesirable negative impacts and it is crucial that practices are found that ensure that these impacts are avoided or mitigated as far as possible. This chapter concerns the use of biomass for energy and the connection between increased bioenergy use and land use change (LUC). Land use and LUC associated with bioenergy can lead to a multitude of environmental and socioeconomic consequences. The chapter focuses on the question whether greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with LUC could undermine the climate change mitigation benefits of bioenergy. There are, however, several options for mitigating these emissions that can be implemented: development of bioenergy feedstock production systems that integrate with existing agriculture and forestry production, enhancement of land use productivity in agriculture and forestry in general, and legal protection of natural ecosystems.

  • Identifying Ecosystem Service Hotspots to Support Urban Planning in Trento
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Ecosystem Services and Green Infrastructure : Perspectives from Spatial Planning in Italy - Perspectives from Spatial Planning in Italy. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 2520-8306 .- 2520-8314. - 9783030543457 - 9783030543440 ; , s. 153-165
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter presents the mapping of ecosystem service hotspots in the city of Trento, in the Italian Alps, and discusses the possible uses of the results to support the drawing of the new Urban Plan. Hotspots are defined as areas characterized by high levels of provision of multiple services. Particularly, the following ecosystem services were selected: biodiversity support, risk mitigation, mitigation of air pollution and noise from transport infrastructures, forest landscape value, food production, nature-based recreation, and microclimate regulation. Maps of the different ecosystem services were produced using a variety of assessment methods, and then overlaid to obtain a multiple-hotspot map. The results show that hotspots are found not only among forests and natural areas surrounding the city, but also in the intensely urbanized valley floor (e.g., within agricultural patches and green wedges). In terms of policy relevance, the ecosystem service hotspots are becoming part of the “structural elements” of the Urban Plan currently being drafted, along with more traditionally recognized elements, such as protected areas. The hotspots are intended to be preserved from urbanization and different actions are under consideration to improve the current network of green and blue spaces, thus increasing both connectivity and the provision of ecosystem services.

  • Hur påverkas lustgas- och metanavgivning av stubbskörd?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Stubbskörd - hur påverkas klimat och miljö?. - 9789157694546 - 9789157694553 ; , s. 39-41

  • Analysing Diet Composition and Food Insecurity by Socio-Economic Status in Secondary African Cities
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Transforming Urban Food Systems in Secondary Cities in Africa. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783030930714 - 9783030930721 ; , s. 191-230
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter takes as its starting point theorizing around nutrition and food system transitions thought to be increasingly occurring in urban Africa, and how this may be linked to a growing non-communicable disease burden. We focus specifically on the secondary city context by analysing household survey data gathered from six cities across Ghana, Kenya and Uganda during 2013–2015. We asked how diet composition and diversity, food sources and food security varied by socio-economic status, using expenditure and demographic data to create a proxy for household well-being. In this way, we investigate one of the claimed keystones affecting urban food systems and dietary health in sub-Saharan Africa—that of obesogenic urban food environments. Our findings indicate that the socio-economic status of a household was the most important factor influencing household dietary diversity and food security status, i.e. better-off households were more likely to feel food secure and eat from a greater variety of food groups. In addition, the number of income sources was additionally associated with higher dietary diversity. We also found that a household’s involvement in agriculture had only a small positive effect on food security in one city and was associated with a reduction in dietary diversity scores. Our findings emphasize the importance of supporting aggregated national and international statistics on agricultural production and trade with detailed local analyses that focus on actual household food access and consumption. We also see reasons to be cautious about making causal claims regarding consumption change and obesogenic urban environments as the major contributor to a rising obesity and non-communicable disease burden in Africa.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Stubbskörd - hur påverkas klimat och miljö?. - 9789157694546 - 9789157694553 ; , s. 35-37

  • Gardeners’ perspectives and practices in relation to plants in motion
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Routledge Handbook of Biosecurity and Invasive Species. - Abingdon, Oxon ; New York, NY : Routledge, 2021. : Routledge. - 9780815354895 ; , s. 226-239
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The establishment of introduced species in new environments is today widely acknowledged as a potential threat to biodiversity, and many plants that are known to be invasive have obviously spread from gardens. Thus, in the context of biosecurity, we need to consider how contemporary gardeners think about which plants and animals are welcome in their gardens. In this chapter we look at vegetation in motion from a cultural and social point of view, with a particular focus on some of many different ways in which people are involved in spreading of plants, both desired and undesired ones. We do this by investigating everyday practices of gardeners in Sweden, and not least the common habit of sharing plants, in order to highlight the social and cultural aspects of the spread of species. Among the gardeners in this study it is obvious that the dynamics and vitality of plants is often regarded as an asset, but also sometimes as problem, when plants simply grow too much. Understandings of the relationship between gardens and surrounding environments, as well as between nature and culture, have changed over time, and are continuously changing. As plants have the ability to multiply and spread in various ways, both on their own and with the help of humans, there is a need to acknowledge the role of human as well as non-human agencies in order to understand the complexity of these interactions. Inspired by Tim Ingold we find it useful to think about both gardeners and plants as ‘biosocial becomings’. In order to address the threat posed by invasive species, we propose that it is important to improve our understanding of what happens in everyday biosocial encounters between people, plants and other species.
