  • Analysis of Key Factors in Heat Demand Prediction with Neural Networks
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Energy Procedia. - : Elsevier BV. - 1876-6102. ; 105, s. 2965-2970
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of heat metering has promoted the development of statistic models for the prediction of heat demand, due to the large amount of available data, or big data. Weather data have been commonly used as input in such statistic models. In order to understand the impacts of direct solar radiance and wind speed on the model performance comprehensively, a model based on Elman neural networks (ENN) was adopted, of which the results can help heat producers to optimize their production and thus mitigate costs. Compared with the measured heat demand, the introduction of wind speed and direct solar radiation has opposite impacts on the performance of ENN and the inclusion of wind speed can improve the prediction accuracy of ENN. However, ENN cannot benefit from the introduction of both wind speed and direct solar radiation simultaneously.

  • Explaining the Unexplainable : Role of XAI for Flight Take-Off Time Delay Prediction
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: AIAI 2023. IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology, vol 676.. - : Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH. - 9783031341069 ; , s. 81-93
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Flight Take-Off Time (TOT) delay prediction is essential to optimizing capacity-related tasks in Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems. Recently, the ATM domain has put afforded to predict TOT delays using machine learning (ML) algorithms, often seen as “black boxes”, therefore it is difficult for air traffic controllers (ATCOs) to understand how the algorithms have made this decision. Hence, the ATCOs are reluctant to trust the decisions or predictions provided by the algorithms. This research paper explores the use of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) in explaining flight TOT delay to ATCOs predicted by ML-based predictive models. Here, three post hoc explanation methods are employed to explain the models’ predictions. Quantitative and user evaluations are conducted to assess the acceptability and usability of the XAI methods in explaining the predictions to ATCOs. The results show that the post hoc methods can successfully mimic the inference mechanism and explain the models’ individual predictions. The user evaluation reveals that user-centric explanation is more usable and preferred by ATCOs. These findings demonstrate the potential of XAI to improve the transparency and interpretability of ML models in the ATM domain.

  • Potential of biomass-fired combined heat and power plants considering the spatial distribution of biomass supply and heat demand
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Energy Research. - : Wiley. - 0363-907X .- 1099-114X. ; 34:11, s. 970-985
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Combined heat and power (CHP) plants fired by forest wood can significantly contribute to attaining the target of increasingthe share of renewable energy production. However, the spatial distribution of biomass supply and of heat demand limits thepotentials of CHP production. This article assesses CHP potentials using a mixed integer programming model that optimizeslocations of bioenergy plants. Investment costs of district heating infrastructure are modeled as a function of heat demanddensities, which can differ substantially. Gasification of biomass in a combined cycle process is assumed as productiontechnology. Some model parameters have a broad range according to a literature review. Monte-Carlo simulations havetherefore been performed to account for model parameter uncertainty in our analysis. The model is applied to assess CHPpotentials in Austria. Optimal locations of plants are clustered around big cities in the east of the country. At current powerprices, biomass-based CHP production allows producing around 3% of the total energy demand in Austria. Yet, the heatutilization decreases when CHP production increases due to limited heat demand that is suitable for district heating.Production potentials are most sensitive to biomass costs and power prices.

  • Digital Tools for Supporting Production Preparation : Reflections Related to Designing Human-Robot Collaboration Layouts
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Advances in Transdisciplinary Engineering. - : IOS Press BV. - 9781614994398 - 9781643683386 - 9781643683393 ; , s. 301-309
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Accelerating technological developments and increasing competition make it important to secure the development of production solutions that allows for resource efficient layouts and continuous improvements. When developing production solutions, the usage of digital tools is an important asset that supports production preparation engineers in their work. However, the emerging possibilities to design production layouts where the operator and a robot collaboratively share a task, add more challenges for production preparation engineers. The production layout become more complex, with more parameters to analyze for a safe and secure working environment, supporting a safe interaction between technologies and operators. The design of human-robot-collaborative (HRC) layouts, with ever shorter product life cycles, could benefit from an increased use of digital tools, as ever more powerful simulation and design tools are available on the market. This paper will explore digital tools (such as simulation, emulation, visualization) and their potential contribution for different HRC layout designing steps. Based on this, the needs to be reflected in a guideline for a digitalized production preparation process will be explored from the perspective of developing a human-robot collaborative layout.. © 2022 The authors

  • Ansvarsfull verksamhetsstyrning
  • 2012

  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal. - : Emerald. - 1368-0668 .- 1758-4205 .- 0951-3574. ; 19:6, s. 842-857
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose– The aim of this paper is to debate various critical issues in the implementation and use of the balanced scorecard (BSC) as a management control tool. Because there is no self‐evident solution to these critical issues, they are termed dilemmas.Design/methodology/approach– The paper contributes to the BSC debate by collecting insights from empirical findings, as well as exploring various theoretical aspects.Findings– After presenting four perceived dilemmas and how they affect the implementation and use of the BSC in various settings, the paper concludes that there is a need for further debate and research on these dilemmas.Research limitations/implications– The paper is primarily a contribution to the debate concerning the balanced scorecard and its range of application as a management control model.Practical implications– The paper is motivated by an overall high rate of implementation failure in various practical settings.Originality/value– Some of the problems described have been debated before, whereas others are new. However, there has been hardly any discussion of the dilemmas in conjunction with one another. The paper is an attempt to generate important new questions about the future implementation and use of the BSC.
