This paper discusses a computer aided planning (CAP) technique and its applicability and quality in both these respects. Deuteron breakup by 1.15 GeV protons and excitation of the Δ isobar

- The pd→npp reaction has been measured using circulating 1.15 GeV protons, a gas jet target and scintillation detectors selecting scattered protons with energy above 30 MeV. The distribution of the two-proton invariant mass has a maximum at 2.13 ± 0.01 GeV/c2 and a width of 130 ± 10 MeV/c2 (FWHM). We see no evidence of narrow (Γ < 30 MeV/c2) peaks in the phase-space region selected. The mass of X, excited in the pN→nX elementary process, is 40 MeV/c2 smaller than the mass of a real Δ isobar.

- The pd → npp charge exchange reaction has been studied at 1.15 GeV incident proton energy in a selected kinematical region. The distributions of two-proton invariant mass Mpp, of angle of a single proton and the differential cross section dσ/dt of the (p, n) reaction are presented and compared with model predictions corrected for the acceptance of the experimental apparatus. We see no evidence of narrow (Γ < 30 MeV/c2) peaks in the Mpp interval 2.1-2.3 GeV/c2. The production of an intermediate Δ isobar in the primary (p, n) charge exchange and its subsequent absorption in a final state ΔN → pp process together with the background from quasi-free charge exchange scattering reasonably reproduces the general trends of the data.

- A high-resolution photoemission study of the Be (101̄0) surface, at a sample temperature of 100 K, is reported. Three surface-shifted Be 1s components are revealed having shifts of -700, -500, and -220 meV. These are interpreted as originating from the first, second, and third plus fourth atomic layers while the bulk signal originates from the fifth and deeper layers. The surface layer shift for this more open Be(101̄0) surface is found to be smaller than for the close-packed Be(0001) surface. Reasons for this unusual behavior are suggested.

Can sensory stimulation improve the functional outcome in stroke patients?

- After obtaining informed consent, we randomized 78 patients with severe hemiparesis of the left or right side within 10 days of stroke onset: 40 to a control group receiving daily physiotherapy and occupational therapy, and 38 to a group that, in addition, we treated with sensory stimulation (acupuncture) twice a week for 10 weeks. The median age was 76 years for both groups. Motor function, balance, and ADL (Barthel's Index) were assessed before the start of treatment and at 1 and 3 months after stroke onset; ADL was also assessed after 12 months. We assessed the quality of life (QL) using the Nottingham Health Profile 3, 6, and 12 months after stroke onset. Patients given sensory stimulation recovered faster and to a larger extent than the controls, with a significant difference for balance, mobility, ADL, QL, and days spent at hospitals/nursing homes. Whether acupuncture per se is responsible for the differences requires further study.

Surface core level shift on Be( 112̄0)

- A photoemission study of the Be(112̄0) surface carried out at a sample temperature of 100 K is reported. A surface shifted Be 1s component, having a shift of - 410 meV, is resolved on this surface. The extracted surface to bulk intensity ratio indicate that this component originates from atoms in the surface layer only. This is opposite to previous observations on both the close-packed Be(0001) surface and the Be(101̄0) surface where sub-surface shifted Be 1s levels were unambiguously identified. Among these three surfaces a surface layer atom is expected to have the lowest coordination on the (112̄0) surface but the surface layer shift is found to be smallest on this surface. Compared to findings on other metals this is unusual and reasons contributing to this behaviour are suggested and discussed.

Three surface-shifted core levels on Be(0001)

- The results of a high resolution photoemission study of the Be(0001) surface carried out at temperatures between 100 and 450 K are reported. At 100 K, three distinctly shifted Be 1s levels, exhibiting shifts of -825, -570, and -265 meV, are revealed and interpreted to originate from the three outermost atomic layers. Identification of two subsurface core level shifts and a first layer surface shift of -825 meV is unique among close-packed metal surfaces. Temperature dependent broadening effects observed in the bulk and surface BE 1s peaks are also reported.
