  • What meta-analysis can tell us about vulnerability of marine biodiversity to ocean acidification?
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Estuarine Coastal and Shelf Science. - 0272-7714. ; 89:2, s. 182-185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ocean acidification has been proposed as a major threat for marine biodiversity. Hendriks et al. [Hendriks, I.E., Duarte, C.M., Alvarez, M., 2010. Vulnerability of marine biodiversity to ocean acidification: a meta-analysis. Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, doi:10.1016/j.ecss.2009.11.022.] proposed an alternative view and suggested, based on a meta-analysis, that marine biota may be far more resistant to ocean acidification than hitherto believed. However, such a meta-analytical approach can mask more subtle features, for example differing sensitivities during the life-cycle of an organism. Using a similar metric on an echinoderm database, we show that key bottlenecks present in the life-cycle (e.g. larvae being more vulnerable than adults) and responsible for driving the whole species response may be hidden in a global meta-analysis. Our data illustrate that any ecological meta-analysis should be hypothesis driven, taking into account the complexity of biological systems, including all life-cycle stages and key biological processes. Available data allow us to conclude that near-future ocean acidification can/will have dramatic negative impact on some marine species, including echinoderms, with likely consequences at the ecosystem level. • Atomic data and theoretical X-ray spectra of Ge-like through V-like W ions
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Atomic Data and Nuclear Data Tables. - : Elsevier BV. - 0092-640X. ; 100:2, s. 577-649
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The atomic structure and spectra of ten tungsten ions have been calculated using the Flexible Atomic Code. The calculations yield energy levels, radiative lifetimes, spectral line positions, transition probability rates, and oscillator strengths for the tungsten ions isoelectronic to germanium, W42+, through vanadium, W51+. Collisional-radiative models for high-temperature, low-density plasmas have been implemented to produce line emissivities for X-ray transitions in the 1-4 keV (3-12 angstrom) spectral interval. The Ge-like through V-like W ions are important in nuclear fusion research where their spectra may provide diagnostic information on magnetically confined plasmas. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. • Ingår i: Approaches in Integrative Bioinformatics. - Berlin Heidelberg : Springer. - 9783642412806 - 9783642412813 ; , s. 173-202
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Approaches to investigate biological processes have been of strong interest in the past few years and are the focus of several research areas like systems biology. Biological networks as representations of such processes are crucial for an extensive understanding of living beings. Due to their size and complexity, their growth and continuous change, as well as their compilation from databases on demand, researchers very often request novel network visualization, interaction and exploration techniques. In this chapter, we first provide background information that is needed for the interactive visual analysis of various biological networks. Fields such as (information) visualization, visual analytics and automatic layout of networks are highlighted and illustrated by a number of examples. Then, the state of the art in network visualization for the life sciences is presented together with a discussion of standards for the graphical representation of cellular networks and biological processes.

  • Rapid and Non-Destructive Determination of Fatty Acid Profile and Oil Content in Diverse Brassica carinata Germplasm Using Fourier-Transform Near-Infrared Spectroscopy
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Processes. - 2227-9717. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Brassica carinata is one of the oilseeds in the Brassicaceae family, possessing seed quality traits such as oil with various fatty acid profiles suitable for many industrial applications. Determination of such quality traits using conventional methods is often expensive, time-consuming, and destructive. In contrast, the Near-Infrared Spectroscopic (NIRS) technique has been proven fast, cost-effective, and non-destructive for the determination of seed compositions. This study aimed to demonstrate that NIRS is a rapid and non-destructive method for determining the fatty acid profile and oil content in diverse germplasms of B. carinata. A total of 96 genetically diverse B. carinata germplasms that include accessions, advanced breeding lines, and varieties were used in this study. Reference data sets were generated using gas chromatography and the Soxhlet oil extraction method for fatty acid profile and oil content, respectively. Spectra data were taken from the wavenumber range of 11,500 to 4000 cm-1 using the Fourier-transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) method. NIRS calibration equations were developed using partial least square (PLS) regression with OPUS software, version 7.5.1. Higher coefficient of determination (R-val(2)) and ratio of performance to deviation (RPD) > 3 were obtained for oleic acid (R-val(2) = 0.92, RPD = 3.6), linoleic acid (R-val(2) = 0.89, RPD = 3.2), linolenic acid (R2val = 0.93, RPD = 3.8), erucic acid (R2(val) = 0.92, RPD = 3.5), and oil content (R-val(2)= 0.93, RPD = 3.6). Thus, the NIRS calibration models for the aforementioned fatty acids and oil content were found to be strong enough for prediction. However, the calibration models for palmitic acid (R-val(2) = 0.78, RPD = 2.1) and stearic acid (R-val(2) = 0.75, RPD = 2.0) showed relatively smaller R-val(2) and thus became weaker in their prediction capacity. Despite their relatively lower R2, the calibration equations for palmitic and stearic acids could be used for approximate estimation and rough screening purposes. In conclusion, the calibration models that we have developed will be useful in applying NIRS as a high-throughput, non-destructive method for the screening of large germplasms in terms of their fatty acid profiles and oil content during the oil quality breeding efforts conducted on B. carinata.

  • Embedded declaratives, assertion and swear words
  • 2011
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This article discusses embedded declaratives and their force of expressing assertion, a topic that was debated by Anna-Lena Wiklund and Marit Julien in both numbers of this working paper series 2009. Two questions are focused: “Is the assertedness of V2 declaratives in Mainland Scandinavian structurally inherent?” and “Can also embedded non-V2 declaratives express assertion?” The answer here is yes on both questions, which means that I take a third position beside the ones raised in the previous debate. A swear word test, originally proposed by Julien, but rejected by Wiklund, is also scrutinized. It is shown that swear words actually can be used to discriminate between asserted and non-asserted declaratives. However, the dividing line does not go between V2 and non-V2 clauses, as assumed by Julien.

  • CO2 emission reduction in the steel industry by using emission trading programs
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Green Energy. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1543-5075 .- 1543-5083. ; 4:5, s. 505-518
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The implementation of the EU Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) started on January 1st 2005 according to national plans for allocating emissions rights. The steel industry is one of the industrial sectors included in this scheme. The objective of this paper is to investigate and evaluate the optimum solution(s) for European steel plants to meet their emission allowance with low reduction cost. An optimization model based on a Swedish steel plant is developed and used. Three scenarios were created in the model, i.e., internal changes within the steel plant, EU ETS, and the Kyoto Protocol's clean development mechanism (CDM). For the last scenario, China was selected as a country of the non-Annex I Party for the emission trading by CDM. The modeling results show that the studied plant will face an emission gap between allowed and calculated emissions in the near future. Compared to EU ETS, the implementation of CDM projects will make the plant reduce CO2 emissions at a lower cost. The internal changes within the plant will also play an important role for the solution of low abatement cost. The model developed could serve as a benchmark for the future emission trading simulation's purpose within the European steel industry.

  • Heart Rate–Blood Lactate Profiling in World-Class Biathletes During Cross-Country Skiing : The Difference Between Laboratory and Field Tests
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance. - 1555-0265 .- 1555-0273. ; 18:7, s. 780-785
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To identify differences in heart rate (HR) and concentration of blood lactate ([La]) relationships between laboratory and field-based skate-roller-skiing tests. Methods: Fourteen world-class biathletes (8 women, 6 men) completed a laboratory- and field-based roller-skiing test using the skate technique. The laboratory-based test comprised 5 to 7 submaximal steps at a fixed incline and speed on a roller-skiing treadmill. The field-based test comprised 5 steps on a course where the final hill was designed to mimic the conditions of the laboratory test. HR and [La] were measured for each step. The HR associated with 2 mmol·L−1(HR@2 mmol) and 4 mmol·L−1 (HR@4 mmol) of [La] was calculated using an interpolation method. A 1-way analysis of variance and Bland–Altman analyses with 95% limits of agreement (LoA) were used to determine if test type influenced HR@2 mmol orHR@4 mmol. A second-order polynomial was fitted to group-level data to highlight the HR–[La] relationships for laboratory- and field-based tests. Results: HR@2 mmol was lower for field tests than for laboratory tests (mean bias: 1.9%HRmax; 95% LoA: −4.5 to+8.3%HRmax; P < .001). HR@4 mmol was also lower for field tests compared to laboratory tests (mean bias: 2.4%HRmax; 95%LoA: −1.2 to +6.0%HRmax; P < .001). On the group level, the lactate threshold occurred at a lower HR during roller skiing in the field compared to the laboratory. Conclusions: The findings from this study confirm that for a given HR, [La] was greater in field compared with laboratory-based conditions. These results might have implications for how coaches define training-intensity“zones” during skate roller skiing based on laboratory tests.

  • Protein-dependent membrane interaction of a partially disordered protein complex with oleic acid : Implications for cancer lipidomics
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bovine α-lactalbumin (BLA) forms cytotoxic complexes with oleic acid (OA) that perturbs tumor cell membranes, but molecular determinants of these membrane-interactions remain poorly understood. Here, we aim to obtain molecular insights into the interaction of BLA/BLA-OA complex with model membranes. We characterized the folding state of BLA-OA complex using tryptophan fluorescence and resolved residue-specific interactions of BLA with OA using molecular dynamics simulation. We integrated membrane-binding data using a voltage-sensitive probe and molecular dynamics (MD) to demonstrate the preferential interaction of the BLA-OA complex with negatively charged membranes. We identified amino acid residues of BLA and BLA-OA complex as determinants of these membrane interactions using MD, functionally corroborated by uptake of the corresponding α-LA peptides across tumor cell membranes. The results suggest that the α-LA component of these cytotoxic complexes confers specificity for tumor cell membranes through protein interactions that are maintained even in the lipid complex, in the presence of OA.

  • Characterization of a natural mouse monoclonal antibody recognizing epitopes shared by oxidized low-density lipoprotein and chaperonin 60 of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Immunologic research. - : Humana Press. - 0257-277X .- 1559-0755. ; 64:3, s. 699-710
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Natural antibodies are predominantly antibodies of the IgM isotype present in the circulation of all vertebrates that have not been previously exposed to exogenous antigens. They are often directed against highly conserved epitopes and bind to ligands of varying chemical composition with low affinity. In this study we cloned and characterized a natural mouse monoclonal IgM antibody selected by binding to malondialdehyde acetaldehyde epitopes on low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Interestingly, the IgM antibody cross-reacted with Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) bacteria, a key pathogenic microbe in periodontitis reported to be associated with risk factor for atherosclerosis, thus being named as Aa_Mab. It is more intriguing that the binding molecule of Aa to Aa_Mab IgM was found to be Aa chaperonin 60 or HSP60, a member of heat-shock protein family, behaving not only as a chaperone for correct protein folding but also as a powerful virulence factor of the bacteria for inducing bone resorption and as a putative pathogenic factor in atherosclerosis. The findings will highlight the question of whether molecular mimicry between pathogen components and oxidized LDL could lead to atheroprotective immune activity, and also would be of great importance in potential application of immune response-based preventive and therapeutic strategies against atherosclerosis and periodontal disease.
