  • Pregnancy Rate and Outcome in Swedish Women With Turner Syndrome EDITORIAL COMMENT
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Obstetrical and Gynecological Survey. - 0029-7828 .- 1533-9866. ; 66:12, s. 756-757
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The rate of spontaneous pregnancies in women with Turner syndrome (TS) is low (2% to 5%). Oocyte donation is an option for these women and enables many to become pregnant. Some investigators question the use of pregnancy induction in TS because of the high risk for aortic dissection or other serious cardiac events. A cardiac evaluation is recommended before pregnancy is planned in TS. Among patients with TS who use their own oocytes to become pregnant, 45% suffered a miscarriage. The aim of this study was to assess pregnancy rate and outcome in a population of Swedish women with spontaneous pregnancies or who were induced using donated oocytes. Cytogenetic karyotype also was examined; mosaicism was defined as the presence of more than 5% 46, XX cells. The study subjects were 482 women with TS who had participated in a voluntary screening program conducted at Swedish Turner Centers. Among the 482 women with TS, 57 (12%) had pregnancies, including spontaneous pregnancies. The live-born rate was 67 of 124 (54%). The patient's own oocytes were used in 27 (47%) of the pregnancies and oocyte donation in 30 (53%) of pregnancies. Spontaneous pregnancies occurred in 23 of 57 women (40%) with TS. Most pregnancies using the patient's own oocytes occurred in those with 45, X/46, XX mosaic karyotype. The miscarriage rate was 26% after oocyte donation and 45% with the use of the patient's own oocytes. Five liveborns (7%) had birth defects or a serious illness; 4 of these were born after spontaneous pregnancies. Only 1 live-born had coarctation of the aorta.

  • Changing the risk at the margin : Smallholder farming and public policy in developing countries
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis consists of a summary and four self-contained papers. Paper [I] examines whether the implementation of a social safety net programme in Ethiopia has affected the value, risk and composition of farmers‟ crop portfolios. The empirical analysis suggests that the value and risk of the crop portfolio have not been altered due to the programme. However, the programme seems to have brought about some changes in the land allocated to different crops. Paper [II] studies how a social safety net affects farmers‟ (dis)investments in productive assets. More specifically, it studies how the Productive Safety Net Programme in Ethiopia has changed livestock and tree holdings. The results indicate no significant effect on livestock holdings, but a significant increase in tree holdings. Paper [III] investigates if there is a problem of adverse selection in formal microlending in rural Bangladesh. The results indicate that farmers who only borrow formally have a shadow price of capital that is substantially higher than the average informal interest rate. This suggests that farmers that only borrow formally are perceived as poor credit risks by informal lenders. Paper [IV] explores the economic incentives surrounding the cultivation of opium poppy in Afghanistan. Specifically, it examines the impact of eradication policies when opium is used as a means of obtaining credit, and when the crops are produced in sharecropping arrangements. The results indicate that both these features are likely to affect the outcome of eradication policies.

  • 'Waiting for the other shoe to drop' : waiting for health care and duration of sick leave
  • 2010
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper uses a labor supply model that incorporates waiting for health care to derive an empirical specification for sick leave and to estimate the impact of waiting for health care on the duration of sick leave. In the estimations, we use the 2002 sample of the RFV-LS register database, supplemented with information from questionnaires. The results indicate that almost all waiting for health care variables have a statistically significant positive impact on the duration of sick leave, and did not induce substantial changes on the impact of traditional variables of the labor supply model.

  • Assessing accuracy of statistical inferences by resamplings
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Mathematical and Statistical Models and Methods in Reliability. - New York : Birkhäuser Verlag. - 9780817649708 - 9780817649715 ; , s. 193-206
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Suppose that a list of explanatory variables and corresponding random responses was obtained during a series of regression experiments. The characteristic of interest is the mean value of responses considered as a regression function of corresponding values of explanatory variables. For example, if responses are failure times of tested elements, then the conditional mean value of life time given the value of explanatory variable is one of the important reliability characteristics of the tested elements. The analysis of this type of data can be realized in the framework of linear heteroscedastic regression models. Here, one of the central problems is a consistent estimation of the unknown regression function when the size of data grows unboundedly. The problems related to analysis of regression data attracted many researches, see Wu [Ann. Statist. 14, 1261–1350 (1986)]. We give an approach to consistent solution of the problems under the assumption that values of explanatory variables are real numbers and the regression function is a polynomial with unknown degree and coefficients. The selection of regression function is based on resamplings from terms in the sum of the residuals estimated by the ordinary least squares method with various values of polynomial degree. In a similar way, resamplings from the weighted estimated residuals are used for consistent estimation of the deviations distributions of estimated coefficients from their true unknown values. The consistency of applied resamplings methods holds under certain assumptions, e.g. it is assumed that the residuals distributions have uniformly integrable second moments (assumption AW 2). Given in Appendix a variant of the Central Limit Resampling Theorem is used in the proofs of Theorems 1 and 2.
