  • Internalising external environmental effects in efficiency analysis : The Swedish pulp and paper industry 2000-2007
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Economic Analysis and Policy. - : Elsevier. - 0313-5926. ; 51, s. 22-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the efficiency in the Swedish pulp and paper industry using national account data. By using a directional distance function approach we are able to investigate different aspects of efficiency relating to the direction of scaling. In the first analysis, desired output (pulp and paper) and undesired output (pollution) are considered equally important. This analysis shows that there is a 12% potential to simultaneously reduce pollution and increase the production of pulp and paper. In the second analysis, only undesired output is considered. The analysis shows an average potential reduction in pollution of 22%. If, on the other hand, this potential is computed in terms of desired output, keeping undesired output constant, the average potential increase in desired output is 14%. In a fourth analysis we discuss the potential to evaluate the costs of environmental regulations using the DEA methodology. Finally, our paper demonstrates that data from national accounts can be used to investigate different aspects of environmental efficiency.

  • A transition of power in opioid substitution treatment : Clinic managers' views on the consequences of a patient choice reform
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nordic Studies on Alcohol and Drugs. - : Sage Publications. - 1455-0725 .- 1458-6126. ; 39:3, s. 279-300
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: Opioid substitution treatment (OST) is often described as a strict and highly regulated treatment method, in which patients have limited influence over their treatment. In 2014, a reform was introduced by the regional council of Skåne in southern Sweden, which allowed OST patients to choose their treatment provider, thus transferring power from care providers to patients. The aim of this study was to examine what this increase in patient influence has meant for the clinics that provide OST in Skåne, and how these clinics have dealt with the new competitive situation that has arisen following the introduction of the reform. Methods: The study is based on two waves of semi-structured interviews with clinic managers at all OST clinics in Skåne. Results: The clinic managers described the increase in patient influence as a positive change, which had led to the patients being treated with more respect. The competition among clinics was expressed, among other things, in the form of differing views on the prescription of benzodiazepines, which initially gave rise to dissatisfaction among clinics with a more restrictive approach to such prescriptions. The reform did not lead to any clear diversity between clinics, apart from different approaches to the prescription of benzodiazepines. The incentive for competition-based diversity is, however, limited by the strict national regulatory system and by the reimbursement system, which restricts the ways in which clinics can conduct treatment activities. Conclusion: OST-clinic managers were largely positive about the increased patient empowerment and the shift in power balance associated with the patient choice reform. The introduction of the reform did not lead to any clear diversity between treatment providers, apart from differing views on the prescription of benzodiazepines, which by some managers was regarded as unfair competition.

  • The increase in mental illness among adolescents in Sweden—epidemiology and possible explanations
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Public Health. ; 19:Suppl 1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background According to a health survey by the World Health Organization on children 1–14 years old, Sweden was ranked among the highest in the European Union. However, at the same time mental illness has increased among adolescents and young adults in Sweden. Methods: Systematic review. Results The proportion of individuals aged 16–24 years who suffered from worries and anxiety increased dramatically between 1980 and 2006, from 9 to 28% among females and from 4 to 14% among males. Also the proportion of high school students,´who stated that they felt down, doubled between 1985 and 2001. And while inpatient visits due to psychiatric disorders decreased in the general population, it increased for certain diagnoses among younger individuals, for example the number of female adolescents treated for depression and anxiety which was eighth times higher in 2003 compared with 1980. Among males the same proportion was three times higher. Also regarding hospitalization for deliberate self-harm this trend has been observed. Lastly, sales of antidepressants have increases among young individuals. Conclusion Sweden is not the only country where this development among young individuals has been observed, many other high income countries have seen the same but may be it has been more pronounced in Sweden. Several suggestions have been put forward in the debate to explain this phenomenon, such as effects of the modern society, increased demands on individual decisions, a lack of historic continuity, labour market effects due to the globalization and in regard to Sweden; also effects of a secularized society

    • Here we follow the exciting exploration of dark matter, from the Big Bang to its anticipated discovery at the Large Hadron Collider. The first hints of dark matter were wound by Fritz Zwicky, the scientist who coined the term. We get to see the astral choreography witnessed by Vera Rubin in the Andromeda galaxy and then plummet deep underground to see the most sensitive dark matter detector on Earth, housed in a former gold mine. From there, we journey across space and time to the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, speeding alongside particles before they collide in visually stunning explosions of light and sound, while learning how scientists around the world are collaborating to track down the constituents of dark matter.

  • Planar Friction Modelling with LuGre Dynamics and Limit Surfaces
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Robotics. - 1552-3098 .- 1941-0468. ; 40, s. 3166-3180
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During planar motion, contact surfaces exhibit a coupling between tangential and rotational friction forces. This paper proposes planar friction models grounded in the LuGre model and limit surface theory. First, distributed planar extended state models are proposed and the Elasto-Plastic model is extended for multi-dimensional friction. Subsequently, we derive a reduced planar friction model coupled with a pre-calculated limit surface, that offers reduced computational cost. The limit surface approximation through an ellipsoid is discussed. The properties of the planar friction models are assessed in various simulations, demonstrating that the reduced planar friction model achieves comparable performance to the distributed model while exhibiting $\sim 80$ times lower computational cost.

  • Planning and Control for Cable-routing with Dual-arm Robot
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation. - 1050-4729. ; 2022-May, s. 1046-1052
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we propose a new framework for solving cable-routing problems with a dual-arm robot, where the objective is to clip a Deformable Linear Object (DLO) into several arbitrarily placed fixtures. The core of the framework is a task-space planner, which builds a roadmap from predefined tasks and employs a replanning strategy based on a genetic algorithm, if problems occur. The manipulation tasks are executed with either individual or coordinated control of the arms. Moreover, hierarchical quadratic programming is used to solve the inverse differential kinematics together with extra feasibility objectives. A vision system first identifies the desired fixture route and structure preserved registration estimates the state of the DLO in real-time. The framework is tested on real-world experiments with a YuMi robot, demonstrating a 90% success rate for 3 fixture problems.

  • Biomimetic membrane platform: Fabrication, characterization and applications
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Colloids and Surfaces B. - : Elsevier. - 0927-7765 .- 1873-4367. ; 103, s. 510-516
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A facile method for assembly of biomimetic membranes serving as a platform for expression and insertion of membrane proteins is described. The membrane architecture was constructed in three steps: (i) assembly/printing of alpha-laminin peptide (P19) spacer on gold to separate solid support from the membrane architecture; (ii) covalent coupling of different lipid anchors to the P19 layer to serve as stabilizers of the inner leaflet during bilayer formation; (iii) lipid vesicle spreading to form a complete bilayer. Two different lipid membrane systems were examined and two different P19 architectures prepared by either self-assembly or mu-contact printing were tested and characterized using contact angle (CA) goniometry, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy and imaging surface plasmon resonance (iSPR). It is shown that surface coverage of cushion layer is significantly improved by mu-contact printing thereby facilitating bilayer formation as compared to self-assembly. To validate applicability of proposed methodology, incorporation of Cytochrome bo(3) ubiquinol oxidase (Cyt-bo(3)) into biomimetic membrane was performed by in vitro expression technique which was further monitored by surface plasmon enhanced fluorescence spectroscopy (SPFS). The results showed that solid supported planar membranes, tethered by alpha-laminin peptide cushion layer, provide an attractive environment for membrane protein insertion and characterization.
