Towards strategic inter-organisational management accounting.

- We argue that strategic management accounting (SMA) and inter-organisational management accounting (IOMA) have developed management accounting (MA) in two dimensions. In previous theory these concepts are rather vague and they are mainly treated independently. A concept analysis focused on attributes for SMA and IOMA is performed. Similarities and differences in earlier writings are identified. The analysis shows that SMA is an academic, theory-based conceptualisation with weak practical application. The opposite is valid for IOMA. SMA is strategy- and competitor-oriented, while IOMA is measurement- and supplier-oriented. We suggest an integration of the two. With strategic inter-organisational management accounting (SIOMA) a combination of the advantages of SMA and IOMA is achieved. We suggest using SIOMA as a conceptual tool, when an enterprise attempts to improve its competitiveness.

- Ökad global konkurrens ger ökad kundmakt, vilket sätter kundvärde i fokus. Kundvärde kan konkretiseras i egenskaper eller attribut för produkter. För att skapa produktattribut och kundvärde krävs aktiviteter. Om varje aktivitet utförs av det mest lämpade företaget erhålls ett effektivt värdeskapande. Gränserna mellan företag öppnas mer och mer och det är inte självklart vilket företag som skall utföra vilken aktivitet. Det har blivit allt vanligare att företag utvecklar täta relationer med kunder och leverantörer. Konkurrensen mellan företag kan vara mindre betydelsefull än konkurrensen mellan olika värdesystem. Hur hanterar företag denna nya verklighet? Hur klarar etablerade modeller som värdekedja, värdesystem och värdestjärna att beskriva och förklara uthålligt värdeskapande i denna situation? Går det att utveckla en modell för värdeskapande som bättre avbildar denna nya verklighet? Vi har genomfört fallstudier vid två stora, framgångsrika företag, Ikea och Volvo Art. Studien visar att värdekedja, värdesystem och värdestjärna har svagheter och föreslår en ny modell som vi ger namnet värdecirkel. Värdecirkeln illustrerar att nyckeln till konkurrenskraft är förmågan att identifiera kundvärde, översätta detta till produktattribut, konfigurera värdeskapande aktiviteter som genererar det identifierade kundvärdet. Värdecirkeln visar att ett ledande företag kan skaffa sig kontakt både med värdeskapandets startpunkt och slutpunkt och därigenom få ett kontinuerligt lärande. Detta ger uthållig konkurrenskraft.

- In a first order autoregressive model with drift, we derive the likelihood ratio test for a unit root against the stationary alternative. We also derive the test in a state space model with trend. Finite sample and asymptotic critical values are obtained by Monte Carlo simulations. A simulation study investigates the power performance of the likelihood ratio test and we also examine how a bias correction of the test affects the results.

- Sensory ataxic neuropathy (SAN) is a recently identified neurological disorder in golden retrievers. Pedigree analysis revealed that all affected dogs belong to one maternal lineage, and a statistical analysis showed that the disorder has a mitochondrial origin. A one base pair deletion in the mitochondrial tRNA(Tyr) gene was identified at position 5304 in affected dogs after re-sequencing the complete mitochondrial genome of seven individuals. The deletion was not found among dogs representing 18 different breeds or in six wolves, ruling out this as a common polymorphism. The mutation could be traced back to a common ancestor of all affected dogs that lived in the 1970s. We used a quantitative oligonucleotide ligation assay to establish the degree of heteroplasmy in blood and tissue samples from affected dogs and controls. Affected dogs and their first to fourth degree relatives had 0-11% wild-type (wt) sequence, while more distant relatives ranged between 5% and 60% wt sequence and all unrelated golden retrievers had 100% wt sequence. Northern blot analysis showed that tRNA(Tyr) had a 10-fold lower steady-state level in affected dogs compared with controls. Four out of five affected dogs showed decreases in mitochondrial ATP production rates and respiratory chain enzyme activities together with morphological alterations in muscle tissue, resembling the changes reported in human mitochondrial pathology. Altogether, these results provide conclusive evidence that the deletion in the mitochondrial tRNA(Tyr) gene is the causative mutation for SAN.

Induction of the lysosomal apoptosis pathway by inhibitors of the ubiquitin-proteasome system

- The lysosomal apoptosis pathway is a potentially interesting therapeutic target. Since apoptosis involving the lysosomal pathway has been described to involve cathepsins, we screened a drug library for agents that induce cathepsin-dependent apoptosis. Using pharmacological inhibitors and siRNA, we identified 2 structurally related agents (NSC687852 and NSC638646) that induced cathepsin D-dependent caspase-cleavage activity in human breast cancer cells. Both agents were found to induce the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. NSC687852 and NSC638646 were found to inhibit the activity of ubiquitin isopeptidases and to induce the accumulation of high-molecular-mass ubiquitins in cells. We show that 3 other inhibitors of the proteasome degradation pathway induce lysosomal membrane permeabilization (LMP) and that cathepsin-D siRNA inhibits apoptosis induced by these agents. We conclude that a screen for cathepsin-dependent apoptosis-inducing agents resulted in the identification of ubiquitin isopeptidase inhibitors and that proteasome inhibitors with different mechanisms of action induce LMP and cathepsin D-dependent apoptosis.

Resampling Evaluation of Signal Detection and Classification : With Special Reference to Breast Cancer, Computer-Aided Detection and the Free-Response Approach

- The first part of this thesis is concerned with trend modelling of breast cancer mortality rates. By using an age-period-cohort model, the relative contributions of period and cohort effects are evaluated once the unquestionable existence of the age effect is controlled for. The result of such a modelling gives indications in the search for explanatory factors. While this type of modelling is usually performed with 5-year period intervals, the use of 1-year period data, as in Paper I, may be more appropriate.The main theme of the thesis is the evaluation of the ability to detect signals in x-ray images of breasts. Early detection is the most important tool to achieve a reduction in breast cancer mortality rates, and computer-aided detection systems can be an aid for the radiologist in the diagnosing process.The evaluation of computer-aided detection systems includes the estimation of distributions. One way of obtaining estimates of distributions when no assumptions are at hand is kernel density estimation, or the adaptive version thereof that smoothes to a greater extent in the tails of the distribution, thereby reducing spurious effects caused by outliers. The technique is described in the context of econometrics in Paper II and then applied together with the bootstrap in the breast cancer research area in Papers III-V.Here, estimates of the sampling distributions of different parameters are used in a new model for free-response receiver operating characteristic (FROC) curve analysis. Compared to earlier work in the field, this model benefits from the advantage of not assuming independence of detections in the images, and in particular, from the incorporation of the sampling distribution of the system's operating point.Confidence intervals obtained from the proposed model with different approaches with respect to the estimation of the distributions and the confidence interval extraction methods are compared in terms of coverage and length of the intervals by simulations of lifelike data.
