    • This paper presents a model-based algorithm that estimates how the driver of a vehicle can either steer, brake, or accelerate to avoid colliding with an arbitrary object. In this algorithm, the motion of the vehicle is described by a linear bicycle model, and the perimeter of the vehicle is represented by a rectangle. The estimated perimeter of the object is described by a polygon that is allowed to change size, shape, position, and orientation at sampled time instances. Potential evasive maneuvers are modeled, parameterized, and approximated such that an analytical expression can be derived to estimate the set ofmaneuvers that the driver can use to avoid a collision. This set of maneuvers is then assessed to determine if the driver needs immediate assistance to avoid or mitigate an accident. The proposed threat-assessment algorithm is evaluated using authentic data from both real traffic conditions and collision situations on a test track and by using simulations with a detailed vehicle model. The evaluations show that the algorithm outperforms conventional threat-assessment algorithms at rear-end collisions in terms of the timing of autonomous brake activation. This is crucial for increasing the performance of collisionavoidance systems and for decreasing the risk of unnecessary braking. Moreover, the algorithm is computationally efficient and can be used to assist the driver in avoiding or mitigating collisions with all types of road users in all kinds of traffic scenarios.

    • In vehicular ad hoc networks, knowledge of neighbor positions is a requirement in a number of important tasks. However, distributed techniques to perform secure neighbor position discovery, suitable for highly mobile ad hoc environments, are missing. In this paper, we address this need by proposing a lightweight distributed protocol that relies only on information exchange among neighbors, without any need of a-priori trustworthy nodes. We present a detailed security analysis of our protocol in presence of one or multiple adversaries, and we evaluate its performance in a realistic vehicular environment.

    • Ordering phenomena in materials often have a crucial impact on materials properties. They are governed by the competition between entropy and energy. Accordingly simulating these aspects requires the construction of models that enable a computationally efficient exploration of the relevant configuration space. The alloy cluster expansion technique is particular well suited for this task as they can be trained to reach high accuracy while being computationally suitable for rapid sampling via Monte Carlo simulations. In paper I we present the icet software for the construction and sampling of alloy cluster expansions. In this thesis the alloy cluster expansion method is applied to study several different materials. The first group of materials studied are inorganic clathrates. In paper II and III we studied the ordering behavior and related properties as a function of composition and temperature for the clathrates Ba8AlxSi46-x, Ba8AlxGe46-x, Ba8GaxGe46-x, and Ba8GaxSi46-x. We achieved very good agreement with the available experimental data for the site occupancy factors (SOFs). In paper IV and V we constructed the phase diagram for the W-Ti and W-C system respectively. A cluster expansion for each system was constructed and the configurational free energy was calculated. By also including other contributions to the free energy, most notably the vibrational free energy, the phase diagrams for these systems could be constructed. In paper VI we studied the SSZ-13 zeolite and showed both that the Löwenstein rule is not respected with hydrogen as counterion and provided a rationale for this behavior.

    • The homeobox transcription factor PROX1 is essential for the development and maintenance of lymphatic vasculature. How PROX1 regulates lymphatic endothelial cell fate remains undefined. PROX1 has been shown to upregulate the expression of Cyclin E, which mediates the G1 to S transition of the cell cycle. Here we demonstrate that PROX1 activates the mouse Cyclin E1 (Ccne1) promoter via two proximal E2F-binding sites. We have determined that the N-terminal region of PROX1 is sufficient to activate a 1-kb Ccne1 promoter, whereas the homeodomain is dispensable for activation. We have identified that the Prospero domain 1 (PD1) is required for the nuclear localization of PROX1. Our comparison of two DNA-binding-deficient constructs of PROX1 showed a cell-type-specific difference between these two proteins in both their localization and function. We demonstrated that siRNA-mediated knockdown of PROX1 in lymphatic endothelial cells decreases progression from G1 to S phase of the cell cycle. We conclude that PROX1 activates the Ccne1 promoter independent of DNA binding, and our results illustrate a novel role for PROX1 in the regulation of lymphatic endothelial cell proliferation.
