  • Research collaboration for societal engagement and social innovation : Guidelines and reflections for best practices
  • 2023
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We understand research for societal engagement as research that is societally relevant in the sense that it fosters engagement and collaboration among different social actors. If you are interested in research collaboration with multiple stakeholders from inside and outside the university, this guide will provide you with guidelines to initiate, consolidate, and finalize collaborations, while addressing central dilemmas that transdisciplinary collaborators might meet along the way. These guidelines offer a way to engage with such dilemmas, aware that not all dilemmas can always be solved, as they emerge at individual, inter-subjective orpartnership level, often structured by institutional and organisational actions or logics that go beyond a particular collaborative project. While we haveinstitutionalized and well documented procedures and rules for ethical and responsible conduct of research and transdisciplinary collaborations, theseguidelines address a perspective that is embedded in local needs and practices, and which takes individual situatedness and inter-subjective relations into account. This guide invites general reflection on aspects related to conducting research with the aim of strengthening and upscaling societal engagement and social innovation. It offers an explorative approach to solution finding in situations of collaboration, inspired by core research responsibility dimensions (RRI –responsible research and innovation) like inclusion, reflexivity, transparency, anticipation and responsiveness and considerations of ethics of care. It thus linksbottom-up and social innovation with RRI and interrelational thinking.

  • Online and On-Board Battery Impedance Estimation of Battery Cells, Modules or Packs in a Reconfigurable Battery System or Multilevel Inverter
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IECON Proceedings (Industrial Electronics Conference). - 2162-4704 .- 2577-1647. ; 2020-October, s. 1884-1891
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper shows two approaches to determine the battery impedance of battery cells or battery modules when used in a reconfigurable battery system (RBS) or in any type of modular multilevel converter (MMC) for electric drive applications. A generic battery model is used and the concepts of the recursive time and frequency-domain parameter extraction, using a current step and an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, are explained. Thus, it is shown and demonstrated that the balancing current of neighboring cells/modules ,when in parallel operation, can be used, similar to the time-domain parameter extraction utilizing a current step, to determine the battery parameters. Furthermore, it is shown and demonstrated that a part of the inverter can be used as variable AC voltage source to control a sinusoidal current through the motor inductances of the drive train, which can be injected to the inserted battery cells/modules of an adjacent phase to perform an on-board impedance spectroscopy. Using either of the two presented approaches, the individual battery impedances can be easily determined, yielding the state of health (SOH) and the power capability of individual battery cells/modules. Nonetheless, the analyzed approaches were just considered to be applied at machine standstill, which is not suitable for grid-tied applications.

  • Principles of transcriptome analysis and gene expression quantification : an RNA-seq tutorial
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Molecular Ecology Resources. - : Wiley. - 1755-098X .- 1755-0998. ; 13:4, s. 559-572
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Genome-wide analyses and high-throughput screening was long reserved for biomedical applications and genetic model organisms. With the rapid development of massively parallel sequencing nanotechnology (or next-generation sequencing) and simultaneous maturation of bioinformatic tools, this situation has dramatically changed. Genome-wide thinking is forging its way into disciplines like evolutionary biology or molecular ecology that were historically confined to small-scale genetic approaches. Accessibility to genome-scale information is transforming these fields, as it allows us to answer long-standing questions like the genetic basis of local adaptation and speciation or the evolution of gene expression profiles that until recently were out of reach. Many in the eco-evolutionary sciences will be working with large-scale genomic data sets, and a basic understanding of the concepts and underlying methods is necessary to judge the work of others. Here, I briefly introduce next-generation sequencing and then focus on transcriptome shotgun sequencing (RNA-seq). This article gives a broad overview and provides practical guidance for the many steps involved in a typical RNA-seq work flow from sampling, to RNA extraction, library preparation and data analysis. I focus on principles, present useful tools where appropriate and point out where caution is needed or progress to be expected. This tutorial is mostly targeted at beginners, but also contains potentially useful reflections for the more experienced.

  • Modelling and Analysis of Oxygen Enrichment to Hot Stoves
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Energy Procedia. - : Elsevier BV. - 1876-6102. ; , s. 5128-5133
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper presents some research work on applying the oxygen enrichment technique to hot stoves that was carried out in one European RFCS project. In the presented work, both theoretical and practical work was studied. A dynamic model was used to investigate the effects of oxygen enrichment on hot stoves' performance under the condition that only blast furnace gas was used as the fuel gas. The modelling results showed that SOE will enhance the combustion process in hot stoves by increasing hot blast temperature and shortening the on-gas time, which were further verified by industrial trials performed at an iron-making plant. In addition, CFD modelling was performed by simulating different oxygen levels and lance positions at the burner to avoid the hot spot formation during the combustion.

  • Needs and quality of life of people with middle-stage dementia and their family carers from the European Actifcare study. When informal care alone may not suffice
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Aging & Mental Health. - : ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD. - 1360-7863 .- 1364-6915. ; 22:7, s. 897-902
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: The Actifcare (Access to timely formal care) study investigated needs of people with dementia and their families during the phase in which formal care is being considered, and examined whether higher need levels are related to lower quality of life (QOL).Method: From eight European countries 451 people with dementia and their carers participated. Needs were measured with the Camberwell Assessment of Need for the Elderly. QOL was measured with the QOL-AD, and carer quality of life was measured with the CarerQol. The relationship between needs and QOL was analysed with multiple regression analyses. Results: Needs were expressed in the domains of psychological distress, daytime activities, company and information. People with dementia rated their unmet needs significantly lower than their carers: the mean number of self-rated unmet needs was 0.95, whereas the mean proxy ratings were 1.66. For met needs, the self-rated mean was 5.5 and was 8 when proxy-rated. The level of needs reported was negatively associated with QOL for both. Conclusion: The study results show that informal carers reported almost twice as many needs as people with dementia. The domains in which needs are expressed should be the primary focus for interventions to support QOL.The perspectives of people with dementia are informative when identifying needs.

  • Functional characterization of DNase X, a novel endonuclease expressed in muscle cells
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Biochemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0006-2960 .- 1520-4995. ; 39:25, s. 7365-7373
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The activation of endonucleases resulting in the degradation of genomic DNA is one of the most characteristic changes in apoptosis. Here, we report the characterization of a novel endonuclease, termed DNase X due to its X-chromosomal localization. The active nuclease is a 35 kDa protein with 39% identity to DNase I. When incubated with isolated nuclei, recombinant DNase X was capable of triggering DNA degradation at internucleosomal sites. Similarly to DNase I, the nuclease activity of DNase X was dependent on Ca2+ and Mg2+ and inhibited by Zn2+ ions or chelators of bivalent cations. Overexpression of DNase X caused internucleosomal DNA degradation and induction of cell death associated with increased caspase activation. Despite the presence of two potential caspase cleavage sites, DNase X was processed neither in vitro nor in vivo by different caspases. Interestingly, after initiation of apoptosis DNase X was translocated from the cytoplasm to the nuclear compartment and aggregated as a detergent-insoluble complex. Abundant expression of DNase X mRNA was detected in heart and skeletal muscle cells, suggesting that DNase X may be involved in apoptotic or other biological events in muscle tissues.
