    • Planar lightwave circuits (PLCs) based on Si nanowires exhibit several serious problems due to the small cross sections of the nanowires. These problems include large scattering loss, large coupling loss to a single-mode fiber, and high dependency on polarization. Several solutions to these problems have emerged. Recent progress on Si-nanowire-based passive PLC devices encompasses arrayed waveguide grating (de) multiplexers, microring resonators, and multimode interference couplers.

    • An ultracompact polarization beam splitter (PBS) is proposed based on an asymmetrical directional coupler consisting of a silicon hybrid plasmonic waveguide (HPW) and a silicon nanowire. The widths of the two coupling waveguides are chosen so that the phase-matching condition is satisfied for TE polarization only while the phase mismatch is significant for TM polarization. A sharply bent silicon HPW is connected at the thru port to play the role of polarizer by utilizing its polarization-dependent loss. With the present principle, the designed PBS has a footprint as small as only similar to 1.9 mu m x 3.7 mu m, which is the shortest PBS reported until now, even when large waveguide dimensions (e. g., the waveguide widths w(1,2) = similar to 300 nm and the gap width w(gap) = similar to 200 nm) are chosen to simplify the fabrication process. The numerical simulations show that the designed PBS has a very broad band (similar to 120 nm) with an extinction ratio >12 dB and a large fabrication tolerance to allow a waveguide width variation of similar to 30 nm.

    • A three-dimensional (3D) finite-element mode-propagation analysis is presented to give an accurate and efficient simulation for silicon-nanowire- based multimode interference (MMI) couplers. For the presented numerical method, a finite-element method mode solver is used to calculate the mode profiles and the propagation constants in a multimode section. The comparison between the presented method and some other numerical methods [e.g., finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, beam propagation methods, etc.] is also shown. It is shown that the presented numerical method gives simulation results very close to those from the 3D FDTD (with a deviation less than 1%). Therefore, it is very convenient for the design of Si-nanowire-based MMI couplers.

    • This letter presents a design for shortening the length of a polarization beam splitter (PBS) by using two cascaded multimode interference (MMI) sections with different widths. By optimizing the MMI parameters, a short PBS of good performance is achieved. The total length of the PBS is reduced to about 1/28 of that of a conventional design.

    • Passband broadening of an AWG (array waveguide grating) demultiplexer with an MMI (multimode interference) coupler connected at the end of a tapered input waveguide is considered. An explicit formula based on the field propagation of an approximate Hermit-Gaussian beam is used to calculate quickly and reliably the spectral response of the AWG demultiplexer. The widths of the input waveguide, the output waveguides and the MMI coupler are optimized. The optimal design is verified with the experimental measurement.

    • A novel and flexible technology for ultra compact AWGs based on amorphous silicon nanowires is presented. A 4×4 AWG with a total dimension of 50×50µm was fabricated. 11nm channel spacing and -10dB crosstalk was obtained.

    • Planar lightwave circuits (PLC) based on nanophotonic waveguides are becoming more and more attractive because of their ultrasmall sizes and possibility for realizing large scale monolithic integration with a very high integration density. In this paper we discuss two attractive types of nanophotonic waveguides based on dielectrics or metals. For the dielectric type, a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) strip waveguide is considered, and ultra-compact photonic integrated devices such as polarization-insensitive arrayed waveguide grating (de)multiplexers are obtained. Based on the fact that light can be confined tightly in a single interface between a metal and dielectric, a surface plasmon (SP) waveguide can offer a tight confinement for the light field. The cross-sectional size of an SP waveguide could be pushed down to tens of nanometers, i.e. beyond the diffraction limit. An accurate anaylysis for an SP waveguide formed by a dielectric nano-trench in a metal is presented. A novel subwavelength index-guided multimode plasmonic waveguide is introduced and an ultra-compact MMI power splitter is designed.
