  • Single antiferromagnetic axis of Fe in orthorhombic YMn0.5Fe0.5O3 films observed by x-ray magnetic linear dichroism
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Alloys and Compounds. - : Elsevier BV. - 0925-8388. ; 780, s. 79-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electronic and magnetic structure of orthorhombic (o-) YMn0.5Fe0.5O3 (YMFO) epitaxial film (space group Pbnm) deposited on the YAlO3 (010) substrate have been investigated using linear polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetization measurements. The magnetic-ordering temperature of around 280 K is observed in o-YMFO film. The x-ray absorption spectra at the Fe-K and the Mn-K edges indicate the existence of anisotropic crystal field in o-YMFO film, with the longest and shortest Fe–O and Mn–O bonds tend to align with the crystallographic b- and a-axis, respectively, whereas the medium Fe(Mn)–O bond is aligned with the c-axis. The experimental x-ray magnetic linear dichroism at the Fe-L2 edges demonstrate an unusual single antiferromagnetic axis of Fe3+ ions below magnetic-ordering temperature, while a multi antiferromagnetic axis is generally observed in o-RFeO3 (R = rare earth) thin films. Our configuration-interaction cluster calculations also reveal that the single antiferromagnetic axis of the Fe sublattice is aligned with the b-axis in o-YMFO film, whereas it is directed along the a-axis in the bulk o-YFeO3.

  • The future of medical diagnostics: review paper
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Head & Neck Oncology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1758-3284. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While histopathology of excised tissue remains the gold standard for diagnosis, several new, non-invasive diagnostic techniques are being developed. They rely on physical and biochemical changes that precede and mirror malignant change within tissue. The basic principle involves simple optical techniques of tissue interrogation. Their accuracy, expressed as sensitivity and specificity, are reported in a number of studies suggests that they have a potential for cost effective, real-time, in situ diagnosis. We review the Third Scientific Meeting of the Head and Neck Optical Diagnostics Society held in Congress Innsbruck, Innsbruck, Austria on the 11th May 2011. For the first time the HNODS Annual Scientific Meeting was held in association with the International Photodynamic Association (IPA) and the European Platform for Photodynamic Medicine (EPPM). The aim was to enhance the interdisciplinary aspects of optical diagnostics and other photodynamic applications. The meeting included 2 sections: oral communication sessions running in parallel to the IPA programme and poster presentation sessions combined with the IPA and EPPM posters sessions.

  • Concentration of organic matter in hydrothermal deposits
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Organic matter with various origins is commonly associated with hydrothermal activity. Examples from the terrestrial record include hydrothermally produced petroleum (Simoneit 1988), the possible formation of abiotic organic molecules (Holm 1992), and present-day biological activity around hydrothermal vents and hot springs (Corliss et al. 1979; Reysenbach and Cady 2001). If the conditions for preservation of the organic matter are favourable, hydrothermal deposits could be suitable sites for the detection of extraterrestrial organic matter, for example on Mars (e.g. Simoneit et al. 1998).The study of hydrothermal deposits in the terrestrial record allows us to gain more knowledge of the distribution of organic matter in various fossil hydrothermal settings. We have investigated fossil hydrothermal deposits on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, where the heat from igneous intrusions (Paleogene dolerite sills) in wet carbon-rich shale (Jurassic) has caused localized hydrothermal activity with the mobilization of organic-rich fluids. Here, the organic matter is accumulated in hydrothermal deposits: It occurs as vesicular hydrocarbon, located in hydrothermal veins together with calcite, chlorite and quartz, and as a cm-dm thick sheet sandwiched between the shale and the intrusive body. Organic matter also occurs in hydrothermally precipitated calcite veins that cross-cuts the igneous intrusion, and in vesicles of the igneous rock. This is one example from the terrestrial record showing that where organic matter is available, it can be mobilised and concentrated as a result of hydrothermal activity. The same process of carbon concentration could have taken place in ancient martian hydrothermal systems, induced by igneous activity or bolide impacts.

  • Do youth policies matter? National and local youth policies as contexts of youth participation
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Young People and the Struggle for Participation. Andreas Walther, Janet Batsleer, Patricia Loncle, Axel Pohl (red.). - London : Routledge. - 9781138362420 ; , s. 49-64
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter analyses the diversity of practices enacted in the different contexts of local youth participation in the framework of local contexts and local youth policies. It aims to develop the general framework of youth participation set by national youth policies. The chapter explains a typology of participation under the influence of youth policy models in order to highlight the way different mechanisms and settings of youth participation can be ascribed to different youth policy choices at local levels. It presents the local youth participation initiatives in the eight cities and then the characteristics of the local youth policies in which they are embedded. The chapter addresses following question: To what extent and how does the diversity of local youth participation initiatives depend on the local and national youth policies in which they are embedded? In order to understand the second framing element of local youth participation initiatives, the analysis widens the focus from local to national youth policies. © 2020 Andreas Walther; Janet Batsleer; Patricia Loncle; Axel Pohl.

  • On weak convergence of locally periodic functions
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nonlinear Mathematical Physics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1402-9251 .- 1776-0852. ; 9:1, s. 42-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We prove a generalization of the fact that periodic functions converge weakly to the mean value as the oscillation increases. Some convergence questions connected to locally periodic nonlinear boandary value problems are also considered.

  • Evaluation of a novel chamber setup for human exposures of biomass combustion aerosols
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Based on a vast number of epidemiological studies there is today a consensus that increased concentrations of ambient particulate matter air pollution cause adverse health effects such as mortality, hospitalizations, cardiovascular events, respiratory symptoms and reduced lung function. The use of controlled laboratory studies with human exposure chambers can give unique opportunities to directly examine specific exposure conditions and cause-effect relationship with relevant concentrations and particle types. In this paper, the design of a novel chamber setup for human exposures of biomass combustion aerosols is described with an evaluation of the systems function under different conditions (e.g. air exchange rates and target PM1 concentrations). Several different research biomass combustion systems are available in combination with extensive and advanced monitoring and characterization of the gaseous and particle emissions used for exposures. Examples, with data from three performed human exposure campaigns, are included and discussed as a basis for the evaluation of the whole setup, with the target to generate stable conditions in the chamber using different kinds of biomass combustion aerosols. Based on the evaluation of function and present exposure experiences it can be concluded that the chamber setup and biomass aerosol generation systems is able to produce a stable aerosol concentration in the chamber of different particle types.  Overall, the human exposure setup for biomass combustion aerosols together with the integrated biomass combustion laboratory gives extensive possibilities for designing different whole body human exposure studies for a variety of biomass combustion aerosols as well as other experimental aerosol research.
