  • Meritvärde av samverkan : Projektrapport delprojekt 1B inom KLOSS
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: KLOSS, Kunskap och Lärande Om Strategisk Samverkan. - Stockholm : Kungliga Tekniska högskolan. ; , s. 43-54

  • The Sustainability Consciousness Questionnaire : The theoretical development and empirical validation of an evaluation instrument for stakeholders working with sustainable development
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Development. - Hoboken, N. J., USA : Wiley. - 0968-0802 .- 1099-1719. ; 27:1, s. 35-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the concept of sustainability consciousness, an individual's experience and awareness of sustainable development, is introduced. Based on UNESCO's definition of sustainable development, a sustainability consciousness questionnaire (SCQ) is theoretically and empirically developed. Using the data of 638 respondents from Sweden aged 18-19 years old, the scale is developed in two versions. The long version (SCQ-L) can be used to measure individuals' environmental, social and economic knowingness, attitudes and behaviour (nine valid and reliable subscales), in addition to the second order constructs of sustainability knowingness, sustainability attitudes and sustainability behaviour, as well as the third order construct, sustainability consciousness. For the short version (SCQ-S) 27 items were identified that can be used to measure the second and third order constructs. Both versions of the scale present excellent psychometric quality. Possible applications of the questionnaire instruments in the context of evaluation of sustainability policies, practices and stakeholder engagement are discussed.

  • Agency and capacity in the planning and design phase of building renovations
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Energy Efficiency. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1570-646X .- 1570-6478.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The building sector is a large energy consumer and is responsible for high CO2 emissions; hence, improving the energy performance of buildings is vital. Building renovations open opportunities to improve their energy performance.Building professionals and other actors in the early phase of renovations decide what energy efficiency and saving measures will be implemented. Their role is studied here from a middle-out perspective (MOP), investigating the different actors’ agency and capacity. Agency refers here to an interest in and a willingness to implement energy efficiency and saving measures, and capacity refers to the ability to implement such measures. Higher agency and capacity are said to increase the realisation of the planned energy efficiency and saving measures. The data was gathered during three planning and design phases of renovation projects of a municipal housing company in a middle-sized Swedish town. A case study was conducted which is based on semi-structured interviews with actors from the planning and design phase of the renovations, as well as participant observations and a document analysis. The levels of agency and capacity of professionals in the middle of a project’s planning and design phase are investigated thoroughly, but the here defined top and bottom levels are also in focus. The analysis shows that a mismatch in agency and capacity on the different levels hindered the uptake of energy efficiency and saving measures in the planning and design of the renovation projects.

  • Miljömedvetna medborgare och grön politik
  • 2004

  • Evaluating a Sonic Interaction Design Based on a Historic Theatre Sound Effect
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International journal of human-computer studies. - : Elsevier BV. - 1071-5819 .- 1095-9300. ; 164
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports on the procedure and results of a preliminary experiment to evaluate participants’ perceptual experiences of a mechanical theatre sound effect and its digital counterpart. The theatre sound effect chosen - an acoustic wind machine - affords a simple rotational gesture; turning its crank handle at varying speeds produces a convincing wind-like sound. A prototype digital model of a working acoustic wind machine was programmed. The mechanical interface of the acoustic wind machine drove both the digital model and its own acoustic sound in performance, therefore preserving the same tactile and kinaesthetic feedback across the two continuous sonic interactions. Participants were presented with two listening tests to examine the perceived similarity of these wind-like sounds and the perceived connection between the speed of the crank handle and the resulting sound. Participants’ performances of both the acoustic and digital systems were then elicited with sound stimuli produced from simple gestural performances of the wind-like sounds. The results of this study show that, while the sound of the prototype digital model requires further calibration to bring the experience of its performance closer to that of its acoustic counterpart, the acoustic wind machine is significantly easier to play, and the mechanism of its interface may play a role in perceptually guiding performance gestures.

  • Miniaturized fluid system for high-pressure analytics
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • High-pressure chemistry can be used to determine the contents of blood or water samples and to discover new chemistries. However, working with chemistry at pressures of many tens, or even hundreds, of bars often requires expensive and stationary equipment, such as autoclaves or chromatographic systems like high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).Since the introduction of microfluidics in the '90s, researchers have attempted to develop microfluidic chips as microreactors to speed up synthesis with faster mass and heat transfer. Other researchers have made efforts to create microfluidic chip-based HPLC to reduce the cost, increase the separation quality, speed up the analysis, and even enable portable systems for on-site medical or environmental analysis. Still, fully integrated systems have not yet been realized due to a lack of fluidic control components. This thesis presents novel methods for on-chip regulation and monitoring of pressure, flow, and temperature. Papers I and II specifically suggest a method for regulating backpressure and stabilizing pressure and flows using thermally controlled restrictors. Furthermore, a collaboration was made where a pressure-regulating chip was connected to an on-chip HPLC. The purpose of this was to activate sample plugs and therefore reduce the requirement for expensive surrounding equipment and enable portability, Paper III. Paper IV explores the use of a pressurized capsule to generate high-pressure flows that are coupled to a pressure-regulating chip to stabilize and regulate the pressure. Finally, an approach for integrating pressure sensors into high-pressure tolerant microchannels has been proposed, Paper V.The work conducted has provided new insights into fluid dynamics. The regulating method employed in Paper I-IV utilizes a restrictor that alters the pressure drop as temperature changes, hence changing the viscosity of the fluid. Although this technology has been known since before, new understandings have emerged regarding how the compressibility of incompressible fluids must be considered at higher pressures. Additionally, the concept of buffer capacitance is presented, which is central when working with high-pressure microfluidics.Through this thesis, discoveries of high-pressure microfluidics have been accomplished, which enable micro-total-analysis systems that could serve as portable HPLC equipment.

  • Comparisons of the discrepancy between loneliness and social isolation across Ireland and Sweden : findings from TILDA and SNAC-K
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0933-7954 .- 1433-9285. ; 54:9, s. 1079-1088
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose Loneliness may have different cultural meanings in different countries. This may manifest as differing levels of Social Asymmetry-the discrepancy between loneliness and social isolation. Since loneliness is thought to be low in Sweden relative to more southerly countries, we hypothesised that more number of individuals would also fall into the discordant robust category of Social Asymmetry, i.e. that more individuals in Sweden would have lower loneliness levels relative to social isolation than in Ireland. We also explored the clinical relevance of Social Asymmetry in both countries, by examining its association with cognitive functioning. Methods We derived Social Asymmetry metrics in two representative cohort studies: the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) and the Swedish National Study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen (SNAC-K). Data pertaining to a dementia-free sample of 4565 Irish participants and 3042 Swedish participants, all aged over 60 years, were analysed using a multilevel modelling approach, with country as a higher-order variable. Results Contrary to the expected, more individuals in Ireland were discordant robust than in Sweden. We also found evidence for superior performance in global cognitive functioning among those in the discordant robust category relative to those in the discordant susceptible (i.e. those with higher levels of loneliness than social isolation) category, beta = 0.61, p < .001, across both countries. Conclusions Irish older adults may be more robust to the impact of social isolation on loneliness than those in the Swedish cohort. Social Asymmetry was related to cognitive functioning in both countries, suggesting that Social Asymmetry is a clinically relevant construct.
