  • Along the government-media frontier: Press secretaries offline/online
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Public Affairs. - : Wiley. - 1472-3891 .- 1479-1854. ; 22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While the position of press secretaries to ministers has become routinized, we still know little about their everyday life in the political executive. This article, based on in-depth interviews with press secretaries and an inventory of social media use conducted among ministers and press secretaries in Sweden, explores what press secretaries do and the roles and functions they fill. It addresses the overarching question of what it is really like to be government press secretary. It engages with this question through a combination of methods, mapping, and explaining patterns of behavior across related fields and strategic spaces. We argue that existing research and role typologies, while still useful, must be developed by accounting more for how press secretary work changes through new techniques and digitalization. We conclude that press secretaries fill a mix of roles and these are quite stable, but social media impacts on the daily routine of the press secretary and are a part of the work that is difficult or impossible to control. In addition, this study of Swedish press secretaries helps to redress a geographical imbalance in political communication (system) research where the focus usually is on Anglo-American-based scholarship and systems.

  • Matching the Pieces: The Presence of Idiosyncratic Deals and Their Impact on Retirement Preferences Among Older Workers
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Work, Aging and Retirement. - Oxford : Oxford University Press. - 2054-4642 .- 2054-4650. ; 7:3, s. 240-255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite working life prolongation having been at the center of the policy agenda in Europe for the last two decades, organizations’ engagement in formal age-management activities intended to strengthen older workers’ motivation and work ability appears limited. Given policies to extend working lives, negotiated individualized work arrangements—often called idiosyncratic deals (I-deals)—can be an informal and complementary approach to formalized age-management practices, improving the person–job fit and helping older workers extend their working lives. Nevertheless, research on I-deals and retirement preferences remains scarce in the Nordic context, where collective agreements regulate conditions of employment and the employer–employee relationship. Using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling, this study examines five areas of I-deals (i.e., Task and Work Responsibilities, Workload Reduction, Schedule Flexibility, Location Flexibility, and Financial Incentives) and their relationships with retirement preferences among Swedish public-sector employees aged 55 years or older (n = 4,499). Findings show that I-deals are generally less prevalent among women and older employees, as well as among those with poor health, in lower socioeconomic positions, and with shorter organizational tenure. Regarding retirement preferences, we found Task and Work Responsibilities to be related to later preferred retirement age, while, surprisingly, the opposite was observed for Workload Reduction, probably because individuals who received workload reductions also reported poorer health. Comparatively, factors such as matching employees’ competence, experience, and growth opportunities seem to be the most important for public-sector employees’ retirement preferences.

  • Att leva med en världsomfattande pandemi : En studie om människors oro kopplat till covid-19 i Sverige
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - Huddinge : Sveriges Sociologförbund. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 58:1-2, s. 103-131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Living with a global pandemic. A study of people's worries in relation to Covid-19 in SwedenCovid-19 as a health crisis has affected all spheres of private and public life, both nationally and internationally, locally and globally. This article aims to contribute knowledge about people's levels of worry during the pandemic's first phase in Sweden.Worry is examined in relation to sociodemographic background, social capital, and judgements concerning potential threats and the national measures implemented. The theoretical framework utilized resides upon concepts and theories of worry and social capital. The data was collected in Sweden in April and May 2020 through an online survey of experiences of the Covid-19 pandemic.Multiple regression analysis and multiple correspondence analysis revealed that higher levels of worry were closely associated both with the judgement that the national measures implemented were not correct, and with the perception that Covid-19 as an illness comprised a greater threat than its financial and social consequences. These factors were also related to advanced age, chronic illness, and lower levels of social capital. Our findings point to the need for further sociological research - both quantitative and qualitative - concerning the pandemic's various consequences in everyday life.

  • Samma nyheter eller likadana? Studier av mångfald i svenska TV-nyheter
  • 2004

  • A Meta-organizational Perspective on the Europeanization of Civil Society : The Case of the Swedish Women's Lobby
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: VOLUNTAS - International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0957-8765 .- 1573-7888. ; 26:4, s. 1438-1459
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a consequence of European integration and the EU's expanded social policy, more citizens' interests are today organized at EU level. In the case of the women's movement, there is an umbrella organization-the European Women's Lobby (EWL)-in place in Brussels coordinating national women's movements. The EWL demands from its members that they be nationwide and representative umbrellas, which has structuring effects on the women's movements at domestic level. This article proposes to study the Europeanization of civil society through the lens of meta-organization theory (Ahrne & Brunsson 2008). Europeanization can thus be understood as a process which imposes meta-organizational structures on civil society. Through a case study of the Swedish Women's Lobby, this article analyses the consequences for the women's movement in Sweden of the meta-organizational structure brought into being by Europeanization.

  • Mathematical Problem-Solving Through Cooperative Learning-The Importance of Peer Acceptance and Friendships
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Education. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 2504-284X. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mathematical problem-solving constitutes an important area of mathematics instruction, and there is a need for research on instructional approaches supporting student learning in this area. This study aims to contribute to previous research by studying the effects of an instructional approach of cooperative learning on students' mathematical problem-solving in heterogeneous classrooms in grade five, in which students with special needs are educated alongside with their peers. The intervention combined a cooperative learning approach with instruction in problem-solving strategies including mathematical models of multiplication/division, proportionality, and geometry. The teachers in the experimental group received training in cooperative learning and mathematical problem-solving, and implemented the intervention for 15 weeks. The teachers in the control group received training in mathematical problem-solving and provided instruction as they would usually. Students (269 in the intervention and 312 in the control group) participated in tests of mathematical problem-solving in the areas of multiplication/division, proportionality, and geometry before and after the intervention. The results revealed significant effects of the intervention on student performance in overall problem-solving and problem-solving in geometry. The students who received higher scores on social acceptance and friendships for the pre-test also received higher scores on the selected tests of mathematical problem-solving. Thus, the cooperative learning approach may lead to gains in mathematical problem-solving in heterogeneous classrooms, but social acceptance and friendships may also greatly impact students' results.
