  • The Framing of Corporate Social Responsibility and the Globalization of National Business Systems : A Longitudinal Case Study
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Ethics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0167-4544 .- 1573-0697. ; 93:4, s. 653-669
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The globalization movement in recent decades has meant rapid growth in trade, financial transactions, and cross-country ownership of economic assets. In this article, we examine how the globalization of national business systems has influenced the framing of corporate social responsibility (CSR). This is done using text analysis of CEO letters appearing in the annual reports of 15 major corporations in Sweden during a period of transformational change. The results show that the discourse about CSR in the annual reports has changed from a national and communitarian view of social responsibility (cf. a negotiated view of CSR) toward an international and individualistic view of social responsibility (cf. a self-regulating view of CSR). The article contributes theoretically (1) by adding a national–global dimension to previous conceptualizations of CSR and (2) by showing that the rise of CSR discourse and activities in the last 10 years does not have to imply an increased commitment and interest in corporate responsibility per se, only that there are increased societal expectations that corporations should develop the capability to act more independently as moral agents.

  • The relationship between quality management and employee health : exploring the underlying dimensions
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Productivity and Quality Management. - Olney, Bucks , UK : InderScience Publishers. - 1746-6474 .- 1746-6482. ; 5:2, s. 109-123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first purpose of this study was to verify the relationship between workplace health and quality management, particularly the values ‘leadership commitment’ and ‘participation of everybody’ whose importance previous research has pointed to. The second purpose of the study was to examine the constituents and mechanics of the relationships between health and those values. A case study was carried out in a Swedish manufacturing company using data triangulation in the form of in-depth interviews and focus-group interviews on three levels. The findings show that the perceptions of the quality management values were significantly correlated with the employees’ perception of their health. This finding substantiates earlier studies indicating a relationship between quality and health. Important dimensions of ‘leadership commitment’ and ‘participation of everybody’, regarding health, were identified and described in models. The paper provides additional understanding of the connection between quality management and health, particularly regarding the role of leadership.

  • The value relevance of environmental and social performance : evidence from Swedish SIX 300 companies
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: The Finnish Journal of Business Economics. - : Association for business administration studies. - 0024-3469 .- 2242-4296. ; 3:10, s. 265-292
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Environmental, social, and governance performance has attracted close attention around the world and is becoming a focus of many companies, investors, financial analysts, and accounting policy makers. This paper provides insight into how environmental and social performance is reflected in the market value of listed SIX 300 companies on OMX Stockholm. Applying the Ohlson valuation model, we express the market value of equity as a function of the book value of equity, accounting earnings, and environmental and social performance, where the last two variables are the proxies for other valuerelevant information. We test this model with data from the GES Investment Services® risk ratings that enable us to create a holistic view on the long-term extra-financial performance and to disaggregate the effects of various dimensions of environmental and social performance on stock prices. The evidence presented in this study finds support for the value relevance of environmental performance at both aggregated and sub-aggregated levels. In the social dimension, support is found for community and supplier relations. We contribute empirical findings to the current debate on the relations between environmental and social performance and shareholder value, and demonstrate the extra-financial value of environmental and social performance.

  • The Chinese Dragon Engages Africa
  • 2010. - 1
  • Ingår i: Thirty Years of China's Economic Reform. - New York : Nova Science Publishers, Inc.. - 9781608769087 ; , s. 155-167
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • China and Africa have been trading partners for centuries, and China is now Africa's third-largest trading partner. This chapter explores the extent of China's economic engagement in Africa, its strategies and approaches, and implications for African development. The interpretative approach adopted in this chapter involves a comprehensive review of current literature, and draws on recent data to highlight China's activities in Africa and identify areas of expansion and development. Specifically, it draws attention to China's bilateral trade with Africa, and its growth from under $10 billion in 1995 to $106 billion in 2008. Currently, 80% of China's imports from Africa are from the extractive industry, and the most significant import is oil. China's intentions seem to be divided between acting as a facilitator for Africa's development and an extractor of its resources. It has adopted a "soft diplomacy" strategy in its pursuit of global growth, and is supporting the increased presence of Chinese SOEs and privately owned enterprises in Africa. Clearly, there are benefits to Africa's development. However, in weighing the benefits of China's engagement in Africa, African countries must consider issues of sustainability for long-term economic development and develop strategies to leverage the benefits of their rich resources, without being dependent on external agencies for their development.

  • Education–occupation mismatch : Is there an income penalty?
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Economics of Education Review. - : Elsevier. - 0272-7757 .- 1873-7382. ; 29:6, s. 1047-1059
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper adds to the sparse literature on the consequences of education–occupation mismatches. It examines the income penalty for field of education–occupation mismatches for men and women with higher education degrees in Sweden and reveals that the penalty for such mismatches is large for both men and women. For mismatched men the income penalty is about twice as large as that found for US men, whereas for women the penalty is of about the same size as for US women. Controlling for cognitive ability further establishes that the income penalty is not caused by a sorting by ability, at least for Swedish men. The income penalty for men decreases with work experience, which is an indication that education-specific skills and work experience are substitutes to some extent.

  • Förvaltning och medborgarskap i förändring
  • 2010
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this book is to contribute to the development of a dialogue between ongoing research and established practice in the area of e-administration. Just as established practice consists of many different established practices within the public sector , researchers who are interested and involved in the area of e-administration also represent a number of different perspectives and academic disciplines. Our ambition has been to present several different perspectives and understandings related to the ongoing process of change, a charting of where Swedish research in the field stands today. The themes dsicussed from a critical perspective are: The Citizen's Space for Action, Space for Design Action, Space for Action Concerning Regulation and Leadership and finally Providing Space for a Multitude of Interpretations and Roles.

  • Integrating the performance management process of on-time delivery with suppliers
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 13:3, s. 225-241
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses the importance of integrating the performance management (PM) process of on-time delivery with suppliers and analyses the perceived degree of such integration. It describes how the PM process of on-time delivery is managed in manufacturing companies and compares the integration and management issues of on-time delivery between companies with high and low perceived on-time delivery performance. Analysis is based on a survey study of Swedish manufacturing companies in 10 industrial sectors. The focus is on on-time delivery from the respondents' most important supplier. The PM activities defining metrics, target setting, measurement and analysis are not highly integrated between customers and suppliers when measuring on-time delivery. This is especially true for measurement activity, which is the activity with most issues to manage and integrate. The PM issues most significantly related to high on-time delivery performance were automated data collection, registration and report generation.

  • Selection, implementation and use of ERP systems for supply chain performance management
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Industrial management & data systems. - : Emerald. - 0263-5577 .- 1758-5783. ; 110:8, s. 1159-1175
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The paper aims to explore how supply chain performance management (PM) isaffected by the decisions made in the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system lifecycle phases.Design/methodology/approach – Datawere collected in amultiple case study of fourmanufacturing companies.Findings – Four PM activities and three ERP system lifecycle phases were described and analyzed. Eight propositions were generated from theory and the case analyses. Detailed demand specifications could have improved target setting and reporting possibilities, PM education and training seem to be important in both the implementation and the use phase and supply chain PM is highly affected in the use phase.Research limitations/implications  – The paper is explorative. A required next step would be to test the generated propositions on a larger population.Practical implications – Propositions of what supply chain PM issues manufacturing companies should consider in the ERP system selection, implementation and use phases are presented. The results indicate that a lot of supply chain PM improvements can be realized within the use phase of an existing ERP system. Originality/value – No previous paper has focused upon how to consider supply chain PM when implementing ERP systems. This is needed because previous studies have identified ERP systems as obstacles for supply chain PM.

  • Financing home care in Europe
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Nursing. - Rotterdam, the Netherlands : Wiley. - 0962-1067 .- 1365-2702. ; 19:suppl 1, s. 48-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the assumption that care delivered at home is more cost-effective than care provided in institutions, such as nursing homes, the pressure on expenditures for home care will remain. Financial incentives are widely used to get better value for money. Incentives can be applied to authorities responsible for home care, or to agencies that provide services or to clients who receive care. Details of the financing system of home care services very much determine the possibilities for financial incentives. At present, there is a need for comparative information on financing mechanisms for home care. This presentation is based on the results of the EC-financed EURHOMAP project. Indicators have been developed in this project to map the home care systems in Europe, including details of financing. In 2009 and early 2010, EURHOMAP partners have collected data on these indicators in 31 countries in collaboration with experts in these countries. Results were described in uniformly structured country reports and fed back to national experts for validation. Prevailing models of financing for home care will be presented as well as information of the extent to which home care across Europe is pressured by financial restraints. Especially in Eastern European countries, where home care is not well developed yet, funding is a major problem. Co-payments are applicable in most countries to reduce expenditures and to prevent over-utilisation of services. Usually, financing mechanisms for social community based services differ from the mechanisms in place for home health care services. Consequently, modes of reimbursement for providers of different sorts of home care services and the financial implications for clients differ. Co-payments are more prevalent with social services than with health care. Another financial allocation mechanism is means testing, which is frequently used with publicly financed home care services. There is a large diversity in the type of financing mechanism, both between and within countries in Europe. Budgetary restraints are one of the main problems with regard to home care in almost all countries. Usually, access to home care services is restricted in some way by financial restrictions.
