  • Effect of COVID – 19 response in Uganda on Street Children
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Pan African Medical Journal. - : Pan African Medical Journal. - 1937-8688. ; 35:Suppl 2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The unprecedented novel Coronavirus disease, COVID-19, which emerged in December 2019 has been labeled “disease X” by the World Health Organization (WHO) based on its rate and extent of spread as well as harsh ramifications. In response, different nations have adopted different management approaches hinging on various considerations, among them the WHO recommendations. Uganda has incorporated lockdowns, a measure that has affected schools, hospitals, businesses, places of worship, markets, public transport, and a rise in abuse of human rights in the form of police brutality, and domestic violence [1]. However, contextual factors such as socioeconomic realities and poverty pose a different set of problems for the mitigation and suppression of efforts for COVID-19, especially for vulnerable populations. Eventually, the effects of these interventions pitch down to individual citizens but invariably disproportionately affect vulnerable populations such as street children. This commentary examines the effects of mitigation efforts of COVID-19 on street children who roam the streets of Ugandan cities and whose plight barely gets on the research as well as policy agenda [2]. This paper also draws parallels with similar stories from street children in a few other African countries.

  • Why policy action should focus on the vulnerable commercial sex workers in Uganda during COVID - 19
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Pan African Medical Journal. - : Pan African Medical Journal. - 1937-8688. ; 35:Suppl 2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • According to the Ugandan Ministry of Health, as of 24th June 2020, Uganda had registered a total of 797 cases of COVID-19 [1]. Two months prior, a majority of the positive cases in Uganda had been linked to being spread by long-distance truck drivers who drove into Uganda from Kenya and Tanzania. These neighboring countries had registered more COVID-19 infections and mortality. Seeing as the sex workers in Uganda are popularly found at border points where they interact with truck drivers [2,3] they were a key target in reducing community spread. In response, the Ministry of Health employed a self-proclaimed sex worker and Kampala city socialite to cast a commercial break advertisement as a health promotion measure. She warned girls at the Ugandan borders to avoid truck drivers to keep the nation free of COVID-19 [4]. This move went beyond the discrimination that sex workers in Uganda face to show the importance of such a marginalized group in the community spread of infectious diseases like COVID-19. Building from Uganda´s previous experience with HIV/AIDS, unempowered sex workers are at a higher risk for transmission with a 37% infection rate compared to 9% in the general population [5]. Some of these workers are sometimes forced to ignore regulations geared towards infection control as their ‘daily bread’ depend on the trade [6]. During the COVID-19 times, their plight is worsened by the inability to afford safe sex by using condoms and some of their customers preferring not to use protection [7]. Likewise, the majority of sex workers are illiterates as seen by only 53% of them having attained primary education in contrast to 73% in the general population [8]. Consequently, such vulnerable illiterate sex workers fail to fully comprehend the various health measures imposed by policymakers, and their bargaining power for safer sex is subdued.

  • Advanced NMR spectroscopy methods to study protein structure and dynamics
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Advanced Spectroscopic Methods to Study Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics. - 9780323991278 ; , s. 125-152
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Proteins are among the most versatile biomolecules exhibiting diverse structural and dynamical variations directly linked to their multifaceted functionalities. Traditional NMR spectroscopy has played a pivotal role in discerning the structure, interaction, and especially the dynamics of proteins at the atomic resolution but was limited by the size of the proteins under study. The emergence of perdeuteration, transverse relaxation optimized spectroscopy (TROSY) schemes together with selective methyl labeling strategies has opened new avenues for NMR spectroscopy to surpass the once assumed size barrier (~20–25kDa), extending its application in the characterization of large proteins and macromolecule complexes. Nowadays, these recent methodological developments allow the quantification of dynamic motions central to the multitudes of biological events such as protein backbone motions, protein folding, ligand-binding, chemical exchange, as well as domain motions providing the complete site-specific dynamical picturization of protein dynamics at an unprecedented level. This chapter summarizes the traditional NMR spectroscopic approaches and highlights the recent advancements that have resulted in the culmination of NMR spectroscopy as one of the primary structural biological tools to investigate the structural and dynamical properties of large protein molecules and macromolecular complexes with potential implications in human health and diseases.

  • Quadrature Domains for the Helmholtz Equation with Applications to Non-scattering Phenomena
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Potential Analysis. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0926-2601 .- 1572-929X. ; 60, s. 387-424
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we introduce quadrature domains for the Helmholtz equation. We show existence results for such domains and implement the so-called partial balayage procedure. We also give an application to inverse scattering problems, and show that there are non-scattering domains for the Helmholtz equation at any positive frequency that have inward cusps.

  • The impact of business sufficiency strategies on consumer practices : The case of bicycle subscription
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Production and Consumption. - : Elsevier BV. - 2352-5509. ; 35, s. 576-591
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To stay within planetary boundaries, we need to move into sustainable levels of resource consumption, or sufficiency. Businesses can play a key role in driving sufficiency as they satisfy and also create demand. This article investigates how a bicycle subscription company can promote sufficiency among its users, with a focus on modal shift and product care. It aims to fill the research gap on how business sufficiency strategies impact actual consumption, while also providing insights into the less studied business model of bicycle subscription. User mobility patterns and care behaviour are analysed through the lens of social practice theory. Using the subscription, many users experience a modal shift towards cycling, mostly replacing public transport, walking and car journeys. Around half of the respondents also cycle longer distances and more frequently than before the subscription. Yet, users might stop cycling after the subscription, often due to moving to areas with a poor cycling infrastructure. Concerning product longevity, subscribers differ, with some taking good care of the vehicle and others being less careful. The research shows some advances towards sufficiency but also highlights the limits of one company's actions and the importance of structural changes to promote sufficient consumption.

  • Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) as a Sustainable Transport Strategy for Metropolitan Cities
  • 2022. - Springer
  • Ingår i: Transportation Research in India. - Singapore : Springer. - 9789811696350 - 9789811696367 ; , s. 183-202
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transit-oriented development (TOD) is a highly dense, diverse, pedestrian-friendly, accessible, and affordable urban structure within proximity to transit facilities. It embraces the idea that locating the right urban development around transit facilities promotes sustainable transportation, i.e., the use of transit, walking, and cycling. A successful TOD at the metropolitan level is inclusive and is often an effective way to create land values at the neighborhood level. Delivering positive outcomes of TOD in metropolitan cities is not easy and necessitates well-balanced urban design decisions. This chapter focuses on what planning parameters that need special attention to alleviate TOD as a sustainable transport strategy for mitigating urban problems in metropolitan cities, by taking Delhi as a suitable case study.
