  • An action learning method for increased innovation capability in organisations
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Action Learning: Research and Practice. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1476-7341 .- 1476-7333. ; 7:2, s. 167-179
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Product innovation in highly complex and technological areas, such as medical technology, puts high requirements on the innovation capability of an organisation. Previous research and publications have highlighted organisational issues and learning matters as important and necessary for the development of innovation capability. Action learning requires reflections of the ways things are carried out, changes in current actions, implementation and improvement and thereafter another round of reflections. This could be difficult for one organisation to carry out internally and so this research uses a learning network setup involving several organisations for inter-organisational action learning. The purpose of this article is to describe the learning network setup used in a current action learning project in the med tech industry, and to discuss the initial experiences gained. The research project aims at increasing the innovation capability of the participating organisations. The method used is based on action learning and involves representatives from industrial partners, public health organisations and academic partners. The different organisations run innovation projects over a time period of three years, and meet three times a year in learning network sessions with the purpose of developing knowledge by action learning interaction between the different. During these learning network sessions the participants are facilitated to go through different phases: reflections, new concepts, new actions, implementations and new reflections. The paper elaborates on theories of innovation capability and learning networks, and thereafter the methods of action research, experiential learning and action learning. The action learning network structure, the experiences gained in the initial phases of the project, and the experience of action learning and learning networks is then presented. The importance of trust building between partners in the network in order to facilitate action learning and development of innovation capability is experienced and discussed, as is the learning that takes place in the interaction between academics from different disciplines in their interaction with the practitioners.

  • Organizational Factors Affecting Product Innovation Capability : Findings from the Med-Tech Industry
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: ICED 09 - THE 17TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ENGINEERING DESIGN, VOL 1. - : DESIGN SOC. ; , s. 157-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research in innovation has resulted in much applicable knowledge in terms of tools, methods and processes. However, the challenge of allowing "space", time and competence for innovation capability development is sparsely reported. The purpose of this research is to identify how organizational and behavioral factors affect product innovation capability and its development in organizations. The research sets out to explore and elaborate on the research question: How can product innovation capability among organizations and individuals be improved by identifying and changing organizational factors? The individual and organizational factors need to be considered in relation to the product innovation. Theories of innovation capability, innovation and learning, innovation and creative climate are all used as a basis for this research. Interviews and a creative climate questionnaire have been used in five med-tech companies for empirical input. The qualitative result elicits six factors that influence the innovation capability and its development in organizations; brings out the two most important factors from the survey and elaborates a cross analyses from the qualitative and quantitative input.

  • Models and Methods for Analysis and Improvementof Physical Work Environments
  • 2001
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis concerning work-related personal injuries was to obtain knowledge bases for two purposes. The first was to develop a model, the Ergo-Index, for use when comparing work situations regarding ergonomics and time aspects and choosing the most favourable working method. The second aim was to develop methods for managing personal injury risks at company level. Such tools can be used to motivate improvements in work environments, which will most likely decrease work-related injuries and human suffering, and at the same time increase efficiency.Five studies were carried out. For the Ergo-Index model, four laboratory studies of work situations were used to investigate 1) fatigue reactions such as endurance time, recovery time, resumption time and pain reactions in some awkward postures, 2) differences between women and men regarding endurance, recovery, pain and physical strength, and 3) differences between skilled and non-skilled persons regarding endurance, recovery and pain. Force measurement, EMG methods, and subjective ratings on the Borg CR-10 scale were used for studying static load levels in university students and staff, hospital staff and construction workers. In the fifth study a procedure consisting of two models for managing work-related injuries was developed. This was based mainly on injury statistics, semi-structured interviews with company managers, construction workers and other researchers; and on existing models and methods.Several interesting results were obtained e.g. that the same type of mathematical relations could describe the relation between load and endurance time for passive and active muscle loading situations, that pain from muscle tissue limited the endurance also in loading situations with joints near or at the end of their range of motion, that there were significant differences between skilled, experienced workers and non-skilled participants regarding endurance and resumption time, and that no significant differences between women’s and men’s endurance time and recovery time were found at the same relative load level. The results were used for developing the Ergo-Index. Further, the risk-management procedure enabled economic consequences of work-related injuries at company level to be estimated. This procedure consists of the statistically based cost analysis method (SCA) and the method for analysing work-related risks, improving work environment and estimating total cost (Mawric). In an example for a construction company, work-related personal injury costs constituted about 2 % of turnover. Further, the company’s total cost for work-related personal injury approximated its total profit. Only 6 % of such costs were accounted for traditionally as sick-leave salaries, social contributions and holiday pay. The rest, i.e. 94 % were indirect costs. Risk-reducing measures can lower both risks and costs. In the example given, the measures taken reduced company costs by about 75 %. It is concluded that the models and methods presented can be used as tools for analysis and improvement of physical work environment and for increasing management’s awareness of work-related personal injuries, hence providing incentives for improvement of the working environment.

  • Illusion eller verklighet? : planerade förändringar i företag
  • 2008. - 1
