  • Individual Placement and Support for persons with alcohol and drug addiction in a Swedish context (IPS-ADAS) : study protocol for a randomised controlled trial
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Trials. - : Springer Nature. - 1745-6215. ; 25:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Employment is a vital source for experiencing well-being and lowering the risk of long-term social marginalisation and poverty. For persons with alcohol and drug addiction, it may also improve sobriety. However, the unemployment situation for this group reflects the knowledge gap in effective interventions to support employment. While Individual Placement and Support (IPS) is recognised as evidence-based supported employment for those with serious mental health problems, no scientific evidence for the target group of addiction exists to date. The aim of the present IPS for Alcohol and Drug Addiction in Sweden (IPS-ADAS) trial is to study whether IPS has an effect on gaining employment for this group. Methods: The IPS-ADAS trial is a multisite, pragmatic, parallel, and single-blinded, superiority randomised controlled trial (RCT). Participants (N = 330) will be randomly assigned (1:1) and participate in IPS plus treatment as usual within Addiction Services (IPS + TAU) or Traditional Vocational Rehabilitation (TVR) available plus TAU (TVR + TAU) for 12 months. The principle of intention-to-treat (ITT) will be applied. The hypothesis is that a significantly larger proportion of IPS + TAU participants will be employed for > 1 day (primary outcome), reach employment sooner, work more hours and longer periods of time, and have a higher income as compared to TVR + TAU participants at 18-month follow-up. We further anticipate that those who benefit from IPS + TAU will use less alcohol and drugs, experience better health, and use less care and support, including support from the justice system, in comparison to TVR + TAU participants, at 6, 12, and 18 months. A supplementary process evaluation, using the IPS Fidelity Scale (25 items) and adhered interviews will address delivery and receipt of the IPS as well as contextual hinders and barriers for coproduction and implementation. Working age (18–65), willingness to work, unemployment, participation in an information meeting about the RCT, treatment for addiction diagnosis, and being financially supported by welfare, constitute eligible criteria. Discussion: A primary study on the effectiveness of IPS on employment for the new target group of addictions will add to the international IPS knowledge base and inform national policy to include the underrepresented group in working life. Trial registration: WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform ISRCTN10492363. Registered on 14 August 2023.

  • Investigation of background in large-area neutron detectors due to alpha emission from impurities in aluminium
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 1748-0221. ; 10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thermal neutron detector based on films of (B4C)-B-10 have been developed as an alternative to He-3 detectors. In particular, The Multi-Grid detector concept is considered for future large area detectors for ESS and ILL instruments. An excellent signal-to-background ratio is essential to attain expected scientific results. Aluminium is the most natural material for the mechanical structure of of the Multi-Grid detector and other similar concepts due to its mechanical and neutronic properties. Due to natural concentration of alpha emitters, however, the background from alpha particles misidentified as neutrons can be unacceptably high. We present our experience operating a detector prototype affected by this issue. Monte Carlo simulations have been used to confirm the background as alpha particles. The issues have been addressed in the more recent implementations of the Multi-Grid detector by the use of purified aluminium as well as Ni-plating of standard aluminium. The result is the reduction in background by two orders of magnitude. A new large-area prototype has been built incorporating these modifications.

  • Decrease in amygdala activity during repeated exposure to spider images predicts avoidance behavior in spider fearful individuals.
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Translational Psychiatry. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2158-3188. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spider phobia is characterized by exaggerated fear of situations where spiders could be present, resulting in avoidance of such situations and compromised quality of life. An important component in psychological treatment of spider phobia is exposure to phobic situations that reduces avoidance behaviors. At the neural level, amygdala responses to phobic material are elevated, but normalizes following exposure treatment. To what extent amygdala activity decreases during a session of repeated phobic stimulation, and whether activity decrease is related to subsequent avoidance is not well studied. We hypothesized reduced amygdala activity during the course of repeated exposure to spider pictures, and that the degree of reduction would predict subsequent avoidance of spider pictures. To test our hypothesis, functional magnetic resonance imaging was performed in 45 individuals with spider fear during repeated exposure to spider pictures. Results showed that repeated exposure to spider stimuli attenuated amygdala reactivity and individual differences in activity reductions predicted subsequent avoidance behavior to spider pictures in an incentive-conflict task, with larger attenuations predicting less avoidance. At 6-month follow up, initial reductions in amygdala activation still predicted avoidance. This result demonstrates that reduction in amygdala responses is related to clinically meaningful outcomes in human anxiety, and suggests that within-session reductions in amygdala responses could be an important mechanism explaining the clinical effects of exposure therapy.

  • Dinoflagellater : Hopplock från livets smörgåsbord
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Svensk Botanisk Tidskrift. - 0039-646X. ; 99:1, s. 7-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The dinoflagellates constitute a group within the protistan supergroup Alveolata, and can be referred neither to the plant nor the animal kingdom. They swim about using two flagella and are able to orient using various stimuli. About half the living dinoflagellate species are capable of oxygenic photosynthesis, but most of them complement this with capture of prey. Some live ebtirely by capturing small organisms, others are parasites. Some species are able to emit light. The group has a long evolutionary history, and almost as many extinct species as extant ones have been described. Most remarkable is the way the photosynthetically potent dinoflagellates have aquiered their chloroplasts by endosymbiosis with photosynthetic organisms from many different groups. In some cases repeated endosymbiontic events have taken place.

  • The Geras Solutions Cognitive Test for Assessing Cognitive Impairment : Normative Data from a Population-Based Cohort
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease. - : Springer. - 2274-5807 .- 2426-0266. ; 2:10, s. 207-211
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: There is a need for the development of accurate, accessible and efficient screening instruments, focused on early-stage detection of neurocognitive disorders. The Geras Solutions cognitive test (GSCT) has showed potential as a digital screening tool for cognitive impairment but normative data are needed. Objective: The aim of this study was to obtain normative data for the GSCT in cognitively healthy patients, investigate the effects of gender and education on test scores as well as examine test-retest reliability. Methods: The population in this study consisted of 144 cognitively healthy subjects (MMSE>26) all at the age of 70 who were earlier included in the Healthy Aging Initiative Study conducted in Umea, Sweden. All patients conducted the GSCT and a subset of patients (n=32) completed the test twice in order to establish test-retest reliability. Results: The mean GSCT score was 46.0 (+/- 4.5) points. High level of education (>12 years) was associated with a high GSCT score (p = 0.02) while gender was not associated with GSCT outcomes (p = 0.5). GSCT displayed a high correlation between test and retest (r(30) = 0.8, p <0.01).Conclusion: This study provides valuable information regarding normative test-scores on the GSCT for cognitively healthy individuals and indicates education level as the most important predictor of test outcome. Additionally, the GSCT appears to display a good test-retest reliability further strengthening the validity of the test.

  • Migration of human granulocytes in filters: effects of gravity and movable gradients of f-MLP
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Biorheology. - THE BOULEVARD, LANGFORD LANE, KIDLINGTON, OXFORD, ENGLAND OX5 1GB : PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD. - 0006-355X .- 1878-5034. ; 31:6, s. 617-630
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Boyden chamber technique for chemotaxis uses a mesh filter that constitutes a matrix for cell locomotion and, at the same time, creates a local restriction for convective fluid movements that allows the establishment of a diffusive concentration gradient of chemotactic substance in the filter. In the present study, the Boyden chamber was modified by the introduction of a filter sandwich that allowed cell migration both upwards and downwards and by the use of a fluid density gradient controlling cell buoyancy and mechanically supporting a movable chemotactic gradient. This method was used to study chemotaxis and random migration of human granulocytes under the influence of gravitational forces and movable gradients of f-MLP. The results show that gravity affected cell motion significantly during random migration but not during chemotaxis. The rate of chemotactic migration was dependent on the steepness of the spatio-temporal f-MLP gradients. A stationary spatial gradient produced less migration than a gradient that was slowly moved through the filter sandwich in a direction opposite to that of the cell migration. The presence of f-MLP at constant concentration caused a minor, statistically insignificant, increase of the rate of random migration.

  • Stereoisomeric separation of derivatised 2-alkanols using gas chromatography – mass spectrometry: sex pheromone precursors found in pine sawfly species
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Analytical Letters. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0003-2719 .- 1532-236X. ; 45:9, s. 1016-1027
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract in UndeterminedStereoisomers of long-chain secondary alcohols are used as sex pheromone precursors among pine sawflies and some species can be severe pine forest pests. To use their pheromone in environmentally friendly pest management, methods are needed that can determine the stereochemistry of the precursor alcohols. Combinations of 11 acid chloride derivatives and 10 GC columns were evaluated for separation of stereoisomers of 3,7-dimethylundecan-2-ol, 3,7-dimethyldodecan-2-ol, 3,7-dimethyltridecan-2-ol, 3,7-dimethyltetradecan-2-ol, and 3,7-dimethylpentadecan-2-ol. Derivatization with (S)-2-acetoxypropionyl chloride in combination with a Chiraldex B-PA column separated all eight stereoisomers of 3,7dimethylundecan-2-ol, 3,7-dimethyldodecan-2-ol, and 3,7-dimethyltridecan-2-ol. A combination of two different derivatization methods was needed to separate all stereoisomers of the longer chained alcohols 3,7-dimethyltetradecan-2-ol and 3,7-dimethylpentadecan-2-ol. A female extract of the pine sawfly Neodiprion lecontei was also analyzed and the stereochemistry of the sex pheromone alcohol precursor was determined to be (2S,3S,7S)-3,7-dimethylpentadecan-2-ol at an amount of about 7 ng/female. This paper presents the first GC-MS separation of all eight stereoisomers of 3,7-dimethylundecan-2-ol, 3,7dimethyldodecan-2-ol, and 3,7-dimethyltridecan-2-ol in a single analytical run and also the first GC-MS determination of the stereochemistry of the sex pheromone precursor found in females of N. lecontei.

  • Elite communication and affective polarization among voters
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Electoral Studies. - : Elsevier BV. - 0261-3794 .- 1873-6890. ; 84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How does elite communication influence affective polarization between partisan groups? Drawing on the literature on partisan source cues, we expect that communication from in- or outgroup party representatives will increase affective polarization. We argue that polarized social identities are reinforced by partisan source cues, which bias perceptions of elite communication and result in increased intergroup differentiation. Further, we expect that the effect of such source cues is greater for voters with stronger partisan affinities. To evaluate our hypotheses, we performed a survey experiment among about 1300 voters in Sweden. Our analyses show that individuals who received a factual political message with a source cue from an in- or outgroup representative exhibited higher affective polarization, especially when they already held strong partisan affinities. This suggests that political elites can increase affective polarization by reinforcing existing group identities, and that this occurs in conjunction with biased interpretation of elite communication. The results improve our understanding of how political elites can influence affective polarization and add to previous research on party cues and attitude formation by demonstrating that such source cues can also increase intergroup differentiation.
