Industrial policy : Political considerations, payoffs, and peculiar incentives

- This thesis consists of four independent papers. They deal with some aspects of industrial policy, namely public supports to firms that are intended to support innovation and growth at the firm level, using Swedish data. Two papers study the efficiency of current Swedish policies by estimating the effects of subsidies and public loans to firms, respectively.The results on subsidized firms suggests that there are some positive effects on profits and productivity, but these diminish and disappear over time. The results of public loans are more positive with long lasting effects on productivity and sales but only for smaller firms. Public loans do not lead to an increase in the number of employees in the firms that receive them.The third paper studies the selection of firms for subsidies and the incentives firms have to seek them. By modeling the decision to seek subsidies as a trade off between producing in the market and seeking grants, the results suggest that firms with low market productivity might self-select into seeking grants. The empirical results are in line with the theoretical predictions.The final paper studies the incentives that politicians have to implement programs and policies that they know will be inefficient. Since a lack of political action can make the politicians look incompetent, incumbentens have incentives to implement policies even though they know that these will be ineffective, to signal competence towards the voters.

Nanowire-based structures for infrared to ultraviolet emitters studied by cathodoluminescence

- Nanowires are structures with features on the nanoscale, and it is therefore essential to study their properties on that scale. We present optical data from a variety of nanowire-based structures using cathodoluminescence imaging and spectroscopy. One important feature of nanowires is the stacking sequence of the crystal, either zincblede, wurtzite or a mix of the two. We show that this has an impact on the optical properties. In radial quantum wells, the thickness can be controlled on a monolayer level, in the case of flat side facets of the nanowires. With rough side facets, the quantum well collapses into quantum dots, as revealed by cathodoluminescence imaging. In order to extend the emission wavelength of light-emitting diodes into the ultraviolet or to cover the whole visible range, we use nanowire-seeded truncated pyramids as bases for these devices, based on either GaInN (visible) and AlGaN (ultraviolet).

- Problems, such as slow-healing wounds and wound infections, arising at the saphenous vein harvest surgical site following Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) surgery are more common than was previously thought. Few studies exist that addressing this and which at the same time adopt a nursing – patient perspective. This project came about when staff at the regional cardiothoracic intensive care unit was notified that a number of recently discharged patients were now attending the Tissue Viability Centre for wounds at the saphenous vein harvest site. It was therefore decided to investigate this in more detail as part of quality assuring the care provided at the unit. A telephone interview was conducted with 114 respondents who in the last three months had undergone a CABG. The aim was to explore how they perceived their general health and if they experienced any problems at the harvest site. Although no statistical significance was found concerning some of the well-known risk factors, 13.2% of them experienced problems at the harvest site. The findings indicate that the cardiothoracic nurse can have an important role to play at the pre-discharge stage with regard to the provision of information and support for this group of patients.

- Due to its environmental, economical and safety implications, methane leak detection is a crucial task to address in the biogas production industry. In this paper, we introduce Gasbot, a robotic platform that aims to automatize methane emission monitoring in landfills and biogas production sites. The distinctive characteristic of the Gasbot platform is the use of a Tunable Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) sensor. This sensor provides integral concentration measurements over the path of the laser beam. Existing gas distribution mapping algorithms can only handle local measurements obtained from traditional in-situ chemical sensors. In this paper we also describe an algorithm to generate 3D methane concentration maps from integral concentration and depth measurements. The Gasbot platform has been tested in two different scenarios: an underground corridor, where a pipeline leak was simulated and in a decommissioned landfill site, where an artificial methane emission source was introduced.
