  • Inspired or Inhibited? : Choreographers’ Views on How Classical Ballet Training Shaped Their Creativity

    • Classical ballet training has been criticized for prioritizing technical excellence over creativity,despite 21st century dancers needing to be strong in both aspects. The aim of this study was toinvestigate professional choreographers’ views on (a) how ballet training inspired vs. inhibitedtheir creativity and (b) potential gender differences in this regard. Eight choreographers (50%female) participated in semi-structured interviews, with transcripts analyzed using thematicanalysis. The key theme was created from accounts of how ballet training impacted on interviewees’Intrinsic motivation to create, fed into by experiences of Autonomy, Variety andOpportunities. Experiences of significant autonomy thwarting were considered to have inhibitedcreativity; this was one of several areas of gender difference, and a reason for participants topursue choreography rather than stay employed as dancers. In following the emergentRecommendations for schools, it is possible that Intrinsic motivation to create could be betternurtured in ballet training.

  • The shrubland vegetation in western Shewa, Ethiopia and its possible recovery

    • Shrubland vegetation and environmental data in western Shewa, Ethiopia have been analysed. Vegetation data include cover-abundance values of vascular plant species; en- vironmental data comprise physical and chemical properties of the soil, altitude, slope, grazing and browsing pressure.The vegetation data were subjected to hierarchical and non-hierarchical classification and ordination with correspondence analysis. The classification resulted in seven different vegetation types, ranging from grassland with scattered shrubs to degen- erated forest. Ordination of the data and biplot analysis showed that the vegetation is influenced by anthropogenic factors and altitudinal variation. Sand content is related to a low level of anthropogenic influence whereas silt content is related to a high level. This is explained by historical events rather than by the present situation. Total nitrogen, organic carbon, altitude and slope are positively correlated and these variables are negatively related to anthropogenic influences.The shrubland vegetation may have expanded from lower altitudes and drier sites as forests gradually disappeared.The recovery of an economically more rewarding vegetation type may be achieved through providing alternative sources of fuel and construction and through prohibiting cultivation and grazing in the shrublands on the hillsides. Regeneration can be accelerated by actively introducing seedlings of tree species that do not need a heavy canopy cover for establishment and growth.

  • Co-regulation of temperature and moisture in the irrigated agricultural ecosystem productivity

    • Agroecosystem photosynthesis is key to coping with global climate change. In farmland where human activities are highly involved, the interaction between environmental factors and their influences on gross primary productivity (GPP) are insufficiently understood. Particularly, the irrigation and mulching in water-saving agriculture can alter the crop responses to environmental change. Based on eddy covariance measurements of maize fields under mulched drip irrigation (DM) and mulched border irrigation (BM) in arid areas of Northwest China from 2014 to 2018, we systematically studied the interaction between multiple environmental factors and their independent effects on GPP using structural equation modeling, partial correlation coefficient and decoupling analysis by bins. The top three factors exerting the largest total effects on the GPP were soil temperature (Ts), canopy temperature (Tc) and vapor pressure deficit (VPD), among which Ts (0.75) and Tc (0.66) had the largest total effect on GPP under DM and BM, respectively. The independent effects of Ts, soil water content (SWC) and VPD on GPP were different under the two irrigation methods. SWC after excluding the influence of Ts showed a negative effect on GPP under DM (−1.24 g Cm−2d−1), while a positive effect under BM (0.02 g Cm−2d−1). By contrast, SWC after excluding the influence of VPD showed a positive effect on GPP under DM (0.59 g Cm−2d−1), while a negative effect under BM (−0.05 g Cm−2d−1). Interestingly, higher Ts, lower SWC and higher VPD had the potential to increase GPP under the two irrigation methods. We also found that the total effects of irrigation and VPD as well as the indirect effects of environmental factors on GPP should not be ignored. Our study will provide important reference for dealing with the effect of high temperature and drought stress on agro-ecosystem GPP and evaluating the response of vegetation to environmental factors.

    •  The objective of this research project is to analyse and identify the role of tools used in the restaurant industry to improve resource management efficiency and performance, to develop and test the Experience Accounting tool, and to test and evaluate if this particular system is the system that could fill a gap in the hospitality industry.The research is based on the notion that the hospitality business is part of the experience industry and is producing experiences rather than a plate of food and a bed to sleep in.By using a constructive approach to first review the current situation and then use a case study to test and try to establish the practicality of the new management accounting tool, the goal is to lay the foundations for a tool that could be used by the practitioners in their quest for better utilisation of the resources at hand, by producing experiences better aligned with the guests willingnessto pay for experiences.The research identified a need for more sophisticated management accounting methods. Further, the study resulted in a new management accounting tool - Experience Accounting, which takes a step from cost accounting towards customer accounting. This new tool was received well by the practitioners involved in the Swedish restaurant business. The tool also contributed a valuable adhoc feature in terms of a possibility to get a snapshot of the business performance at any given time, as the use could identify the current performance compared to historic data, pre set aims or budgets. It could also be applied by managers or consultants as a benchmarking feature compared to industry standards.

  • The Relationship Between Cardiorespiratory and Accelerometer-Derived Measures in Trail Running and the Influence of Sensor Location

    • Purpose: To examine the relationship between cardiorespiratory and accelerometer-derived measures of exercise during trailrunning and determine the influence of accelerometer location.Methods: Eight trail runners (7 males and 1 female; age 26 [5] y;maximal oxygen consumption [  ̇VO2] 70 [6] mL·kg−1·min−1) completed a 7-km trail run (elevation gain: 486 m), with concurrentmeasurements of  ̇VO2, heart rate, and accelerations recorded from 3 triaxial accelerometers attached at the upper spine, lowerspine, and pelvis. External exercise intensity was quantified from the accelerometers using PlayerLoad™ per minute andaccelerometry-derived average net force. External exercise volume was calculated using accumulated PlayerLoad and the product of average net force and duration (impulse). Internal intensity was calculated using heart rate and  ̇VO2-metrics; internal volume was calculated from total energy expenditure (work). All metrics were analyzed during both uphill (UH) and downhill(DH) sections of the trail run.Results: PlayerLoad and average net force were greater during DH compared with UH for all sensorlocations (P ≤ .004). For all accelerometer metrics, there was a sensor position × gradient interaction (F2,1429.003;P <.001). The upper spine was lower compared with both pelvis (P ≤ .003) and lower spine (P ≤ .002) for all accelerometermetrics during both UH and DH running. Relationships between accelerometer and cardiorespiratory measures during UH running ranged from moderate negative to moderate positive (r = −.31 to .41). Relationships were stronger during DH running where there was a nearly perfect correlation between work and impulse (r = .91; P < .001).Conclusions: Simultaneous monitoring of cardiorespiratory and accelerometer-derived measures during trail running is suggested because of the disparity between internal and external intensities during changes in gradient. Sensor positioning close to the center of mass isrecommended.

  • Cathepsin B Degrades Amyloid-beta in Mice Expressing Wild-type Human Amyloid Precursor Protein

    • Accumulation of amyloid-beta (A beta), believed to be a key trigger of Alzheimer disease (AD), could result from impaired clearance mechanisms. Previously, we showed that the cysteine protease cathepsin B (CatB) degrades A beta, most likely by C-terminal truncation, in mice expressing human amyloid precursor protein with familial AD-linked mutations (hAPP(FAD)). In addition, the A beta-degrading activity of CatB is inhibited by its endogenous inhibitor, cystatin C (CysC). Reducing CysC expression markedly lowers A beta levels by enhancing CatB-mediated A beta degradation in hAPP(FAD) mice. However, because a vast majority of AD patients do not carry familial mutations, we investigated how the CysC-CatB axis affects A beta levels in mice expressing wild-type hAPP (hAPP(WT)). Enhancing CatB activity by CysC deletion significantly lowered total A beta and A beta 42 levels in hAPP(WT) mice, whereas CatB deletion increased A beta levels. To determine whether neuron-derived CatB degrades A beta in vivo, we generated transgenic mice overexpressing CatB under the control of a neuron-specific enolase promoter. Enhancing neuronal CatB activity in hAPP(WT) mice significantly lowered A beta 42 levels. The processing of hAPP(WT) was unaffected by increasing or ablating CatB activity. Thus, the CysC-CatB axis affects degradation of A beta 42 derived from hAPP lacking familial mutations. These findings support the notion that enhancing CatB activity could lower A beta, especially A beta 42, in AD patients with or without familial mutations.
