The association between asthma and allergic symptoms in children and phthalates in house dust : a nested case-control study

- Global phthalate ester production has increased from very low levels at the end of World War II to approximately 3.5 million metric tons/year. The aim of the present study was to investigate potential associations between persistent allergic symptoms in children, which have increased markedly in developed countries over the past three decades, and the concentration of phthalates in dust collected from their homes. This investigation is a case-control study nested within a cohort of 10,852 children. From the cohort, we selected 198 cases with persistent allergic symptoms and 202 controls without allergic symptoms. A clinical and a technical team investigated each child and her or his environment. We found higher median concentrations of butyl benzyl phthalate (BBzP) in dust among cases than among controls (0.15 vs. 0.12 mg/g dust). Analyzing the case group by symptoms showed that BBzP was associated with rhinitis (p = 0.001) and eczema (p = 0.001), whereas di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) was associated with asthma (p = 0.022). Furthermore, dose-response relationships for these associations are supported by trend analyses. This study shows that phthalates, within the range of what is normally found in indoor environments, are associated with allergic symptoms in children. We believe that the different associations of symptoms for the three major phthalates-BBzP, DEHP, and di-n-butyl phthalate-can be explained by a combination of chemical physical properties and toxicologic potential. Given the phthalate exposures of children worldwide, the results from this study of Swedish children have global implications.

Värmland och euron : Studie om de värmländska väljarnas ställningstagande i och inställning till EMU-folkomröstningen

- Den 14 september 2003 genomfördes folkomröstningen om införandet av euron i Sverige. Resultatet blev ett klart nej. Det fanns emellertid regionala skillnader i väljarnas ställningstagande. Väljare i en del län röstade i större utsträckning på jaalternativet, medan väljare i andra län var mer kritiska än genomsnittet. Ett av dessa kritiska län var Värmland. Varför fanns denna regionala skillnad i väljarnas ställningstagande? I denna studie analyseras de värmländska väljarnas ställningsstagande i EMU-folkomröstningen. Vilka argument hade de värmländska väljarna för sitt ställningstagande? Vilken betydelse hade partisympatier? Påverkade kampanjen inför folkomröstningen väljarnas ställningstagande? Hur intresserade var väljarna? Fanns det skillnader mellan grupper? Vilken betydelse hade identitet och förtroende för deras ställningstagande? Studien uppmärksammar också folkomröstning som beslutsmetod. Vad tyckte väljarna om folkomröstningen? Vilken inställning till folkomröstning som beslutsmetod hade väljarna? Folkomröstningen om införandet av euron i Sverige blev dramatisk. Ett par dagar före folkomröstningen avled dåvarande utrikesministern Anna Lindh av de skador som hon fick i samband med ett knivöverfall dagen före. Vilken betydelse fick denna dramatiska händelse för väljarna? Studien analyserar händelsens betydelse för de värmländska väljarnas valdeltagande, ställningstagande och inställning till folkomröstningen.

- We describe three-dimensional Kerr-de Sitter space using similar methods as recently applied to the BTZ black hole. A rigorous form of the classical connection between gravity in three dimensions and two-dimensional conformal field theory is employed, where the fundamental degrees of freedom are described in terms of two dependent SL(2,C) currents. In contrast to the BTZ case, however, quantization does not give the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy connected to the cosmological horizon of Kerr-de Sitter space.

Conformal Field Theory and the Holgoraphic Principle

- This thesis is based on five research papers with string theory as the least common denominator. The text is divided in two parts. The first part is an introduction to the constructions used in the papers; string theory, conformal field theory, topological field theory and three-dimensional gravity. The second part is a review of a concept believed to be important in any theory of quantum gravity, the so called holographic principle.A relation between three-dimensional topological field theory and two-dimensional conformal field theory is re-established in a classical formulation. This result is then used to investigate holography in a toy model, gravity in three dimensions. A construction is proposed which yields the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of a three-dimensional black hole. The same mechanism is shown not to be responsible for the entropy of Kerr-de Sitter spacetime.Similar methods yields a relation between topological field theories in five and seven dimensions and chiral conformal field theories in four and six dimensions.There presumably exists a class of conformal field theories with novel properties, so called logarthmic conformal field theories. By starting from a conventional theory, a systematic way to deform this to a logarithmic theory is developed.

- We perform a canonical and BRST analysis of a seven-dimensional Chern-Simons theory on a manifold with boundary. The main result is that the 7D theory induces for consistency a chiral two-form on the 6D boundary. We also comment on similar behaviour in a five-dimensional Chern-Simons theory relevant for $\N=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions.

- We examine the connection between three dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant and two-dimensional CFT via the Chern-Simons formulation. A set of generalized spectral flow transformations are shown to yield new sectors of solutions. One implication is that the microscopic calculation of the entropy of the Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole is corrected by a multiplicative factor with the result that it saturates the Bekenstein-Hawking expression.
