  • Lärdomar om öppenhet: : EndNote-kurs som öppen lärresurs
  • 2022

  • Datafication as a Trend for Journalism : a Journalist’s Perspective
  • 2020. - 1
  • Ingår i: The Routledge Handbook of Religion and Journalism. - Abingdon, Oxon; New York: Routledge, 2021. | Series: Routledge handbooks in religion : Routledge. - 9781138304963 - 9780203731420
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The datafication of journalism creates new demands on journalists. The set of skills and the daily work in the newsroom have changed the profession where traditional values might still be present but are challenged by how data is received, constructed and analyzed. This impacts how journalism is being produced; data contributes to the reporting and provides opportunities on how to conduct research and present the material; and simultaneously data also generates new ways of developing business models for the media industry. In the professional shift that is juxtaposed with the digital transition, this development creates new editorial positions that have led to a re-design of the actual newsrooms, where time pressure often is present and general knowledge about the set of digitals skills are required. In this chapter, the author builds on his observations as a journalist and journalism teacher, to explore and examine what the datafication of journalism means for the individual journalist who executes the digital transition in the newsroom.

  • The Power to do Good : Post-Revolution, NGO Society, and the Emergence of NGO-Elites in Contemporary Nicaragua
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis critically examines the world of NGOs in contemporary Nicaragua, and suggests connections between the current development 'boom' and the emergence of a materially privileged local development elite, which by means of its cultural and economic capital are in a position to exiercise considerable power in relation to other less powerful strata of the population. It is based on fieldwork conducted in Ocotal, Nicaragua, from June 2000 to April 2003. Analysed from a centre - periphery perspective power relations of the development system become discernable in how behaviour and expression of NGO actors change, and how identity is formed and reproduced, as actors move between different spaces of the system that constitute their arena. The thesis underlines the economic reality and the existential conditions in the arena in which many Nicaraguan NGOs operate, and shows that economic aspects - including personal profit - become a substantial motivational force that drives organisations that are nonprofit. Those economic forces are in Nicaraguan NGOs continuously merged with more idealistic and voluntary elements that are strongly configured by the revolutionary antecedents to the current development boom that is said to be occuring. The dissertation thus explores an ambivalent combination of professionalism and commitment that is expressed among individuals who work with NGOs in contemporary Nicaragua. The idealisation of NGOs, and their different projects, contribute to the creation of an assumption that they are 'doing good', which is rarely contested in Nicaragua. This accounts for the hegemonic power of the discourse of development as well as the dominant position of people who work in development projects; NGOs and the discourse of development that is expressed by the latter is becoming the naturalised 'best order' of the world, and the position of its carriers is rarely contested.

  • Using Social Norms to Fight Corruption in Local Governments : A Case Study of the School System in Hanoi, Vietnam
  • 2021
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This policy brief looks into the role of social norms to fight corruption in the school system in the Cau Giay district in Hanoi. An ongoing research project has conducted multiple ethnographic field studies in schools and included parents, teachers, and other school personnel in the research data. Their experiences and reflections are the core of this brief. The results show the existence of informal transactions to ensure good care and schools results backed up on social norms such as the celebration of national holidays throughout the school year, but also exist on an everyday basis with the practices of home teaching, and the recruitment of new teachers to schools. By applying a socio-legal anti-corruption perspective to the findings, we suggest a list of actions that could be implemented by local school administrators and headmasters to ensure that no child experiences corruption nor the impact of corruption on his/her schooling.

  • Reducing water damage by using a holistic approach to costs, occurrence and solutions in buildings
  • 2023
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A large amount of water damage cases and resources are annually reported and spent on water damage in Sweden from cases occurring in buildings from building services such as tap water-, sewage, heating systems, household appliances such as refrigerators, freezers and dishwashers and inadequate waterproof membranes in wet rooms. These water damage cases in buildings cause several problems in the built environment regarding economic, environmental, and social aspects of sustainability such as unhealthy indoor environments due to higher levels of moisture, mold growth, and redundant usage of building materials and resources in reparations and renovations of water damaged constructions, immense amounts of monetary resources spent annually by both residents, building owners and insurance companies to restore the buildings to their designed purpose. This thesis aimed to reduce water damage occurrence and costs in buildings by outlining a holistic approach to the aspects of sustainability, occurrence, costs and solutions. Using qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze the state-of-the-art water damage research field, this thesis conducted several analyses to determine the occurrence, costs and solutions of water damage in the buildings. To reduce the impact and effects of water damage in buildings this thesis used empirical statistical data, parametric analysis, and a holistic approach regarding factors such as building purpose/type, extent of occurrence and causes, effects of the damage, different stakeholders and different solutions. A model was proposed regarding key figures, water damage causes, age distribution of reported damage cases, and estimated repair costs depending on the water damage cause and origin, to consider during the different phases, design, construction and operation, of the building. The results of the thesis found that there exists a gap in the research and data collection of water damage occurrence, costs and consequences in buildings such as multi-family and non-residential buildings. The research conducted often includes the studied type of water damage cases in this thesis; building service systems, appliances and waterproof membranes, within the fields of building pathology and building defects but does not explicitly study the causes, associated costs and occurrence from different water supply systems and different origins within the building. The consequences of water damage from building services and installations, such as environmental and social impact are not often regarded. The associated costs of water damage for the studied part of the building stock, were calculated to amount to approximately 1.1 billion € per year (12.6 billion SEK) including repairs of water-damaged buildings, single-, multi-, and public buildings, and insurance costs covered by the residents, such as deductible and age reduction costs. Solutions identified, that could be a part of the solution to reduce the occurrence, cost and consequences of water damage, were both passive and active technical solutions together with structures and information regarding the management and operation during the different phases of the building life cycle. The model presented causes and water damage cases, reported by the insurance industry, with the costliest repairs occurring due to corrosion, age/wear, and freezing damage, followed by faulty waterproof membranes and connection of membranes to drains and then refrigerators/freezers and dishwashers. Moreover, the expected time before water damage was reported was found to be most frequent in the first 10-year period after installation for several water damage causes reported in single-family buildings. The thesis concluded, with the use of the holistic approach and the presented model of monetary resources spent on water damage and the associated costs, that if actions are taken to reduce water damage cases the immense resources that are annually allocated to water damage could be reduced, it could also reduce the unnecessary use of resources in replacing and repairing damaged material with existing service life, it also could decrease the associated costs, decrease the moisture, and water levels in buildings and could have the potential to improve the sustainability in the building sector and allocate the resource to other areas such as measures to improve the indoor environment and reducing the carbon emissions.

  • Staphylococcal induced inflammatory response in human monocytes: Analysis of factors involved
  • 1996
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Purified bacterial cell wall components peptidoglycan and teichoic acid were isolated from staphylococcal species S. aureus and/or S. epidermidis and tested for their ability to induce cytokine release from plastic-adherent human monocytes. Both cell wall components dose-dependently induced TNF-alpha, interleukin-1beta, and interleukin-6 release, peptidoglycan being more potent than teichoic acid. Reducing the molecular size of peptidoglycan with enzymes or sonication resulted in a loss of TNF-alpha-inducing capacity. Human serum highly potentiated peptidoglycan-induced TNF-alpha release, as measured by ELISA and bioassay. Using deficient and depleted sera it was shown that complement components and immunoglobulin G were involved. The differential effects of intracellular pathway inhibitors on TNF-alpha release were studied using monocytes stimulated by peptidoglycan from S. epidermidis or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Escherichia coli in the presence of 10% human serum. The results showed an involvement of calmodulin-dependent protein kinase, protein tyrosine kinase, and a cholera-toxin-sensitive G protein in peptidoglycan- and LPS-induced TNF-alpha release. A S. epidermidis isolate was incubated with 5x minimum inhibitory concentrations of penicillin, oxacillin, vancomycin, or clindamycin. Supernatants from the cultures were tested for TNF-alpha release in the absence or presence of serum. Beta-lactam antibiotics generated significantly more TNF-alpha-releasing material than vancomycin, clindamycin or the bacteria as such. Soluble peptidoglycan and teichoic acid contents estimated by inhibition ELISA correlated with TNF-alpha release.
