  • Electroluminescence from Substituted Poly(thiophenes) : From Blue to Near-Infrared
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Macromolecules. - : American Chemical Society. - 0024-9297 .- 1520-5835. ; 28:22, s. 7525-7529
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report a systematic approach to the control of the conjugation length along the poly(thiophene) backbone. The planarity of the main chain can be permanently modified by altering the pattern of substitution and character of the substituents on the poly(thiophene) chain, and the conjugation length is thus modified. We obtain blue, green, orange, red, and near-infrared electroluminescence from four chemically distinct poly(thiophenes). The external quantum efficiencies are in the range of 0.01-0.6%.

  • Cryotransmission electron microscopy of thin vitrified samples.
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Current Opinion in Colloid & Interface Science. - 1359-0294 .- 1879-0399. ; 1:2, s. 270-278
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the past few years cryotransmission electron microscopy (EM) of vitrified thin samples has gained acceptance as a standard method in the arsenal of the colloid and interface scientist. The seemingly direct visualization of fluid colloidal structures during the use of cryotransmission EM is both convincing and reliable to the scientist who nowadays has an increasing awareness of the limitations and pitfalls of instrumentation. Notable recent observations include branched threadlike micelles, faceted particles (cubosomes) of a dispersed cubic phase and transitions of certain structures from globular micelles via bilayers to reversed structures. These transitions may be caused by changes of compos ition, temperature, pH, or salt concentration.

  • Synthesis of poly(alkylthiophenes) for light-emitting diodes
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Synthetic metals. - : Elsevier. - 0379-6779 .- 1879-3290. ; 71:1-3, s. 2183-2184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have demonstrated a general way to tune the emission of poly(alkylthiophenes) by using steric interaction between the repeating units. Light-emitting diodes prepared of the polymers have blue to near-infrared emission.

  • Controlling colour by voltage in polymer light emitting diodes
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Synthetic metals. - : Elsevier. - 0379-6779 .- 1879-3290. ; 71:1-3, s. 2185-2186
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report electroluminescence using different substituted polythiophenes as the emitting mterial. Different substituents cause different sterical interacion which force the thiophene rings out of planarity. This results in different bandgaps. Colours from blue to near infrared have been demonstrated in electroluminescent devices. We also demonstrate voltage controlled electroluminescence using mixtures of these polymers.

  • Polymer light-emitting diodes placed in microcavities
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Synthetic metals. - : Elsevier. - 0379-6779 .- 1879-3290. ; 76:1-3, s. 121-123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of resonant optical microcavities to influence the emission properties of conjugated polymer light-emitting diodes (LEDs) is reported. The microcavities, which are built using metallic mirrors and polymeric spacers, incorporate polymer LEDs in between the mirrors. We report experimental results of polymer LEDs based on substituted polythiophenes. The effects include substantial narrowing of the spectral width of the emitted light, enhancement of the emission at the microcavity resonance, and coupling of two emission processes to different resonance modes in the same cavity.

  • Cerebral uptake of morphine in the pig calculated from arterio-venous plasma concentration gradients: an alternative to tissue microdialysis
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Life Sciences. - 1879-0631 .- 0024-3205. ; 57:25, s. 2335-2345
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to characterize the reversible cerebral uptake of morphine in the pig by measuring the changing arterio-venous plasma concentration gradient over the brain. Seven pigs were anaesthetized by continuous infusions of ketamine and pancuronium and ventilated with oxygen in nitrous oxide. During and after 5-min intravenous infusions of morphine hydrochloride, blood samples were drawn from a central artery and from the internal jugular vein. Concomitantly, cerebral blood flow (CBF) was repeatedly measured as clearance of 133Xe from the brain after intracarotid injection. Plasma concentrations of morphine and, in samples from two animals, morphine glucuronides were assayed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Drug flux (Jnet) from arterial blood to brain was calculated from the arterio-venous plasma concentration gradients, the blood:plasma concentration ratio and CBF. Uptake of morphine from arterial blood to brain was very rapid, with a maximal Jnet typically at 3 min after the beginning of the infusion. The initial cerebral extraction of morphine was close to 50%. When the arterial and jugular venous concentration curves crossed, 1-5 min after the end of the infusion, the initially rapid uptake of morphine changed into a slow and steady release. The cerebral extraction of morphine glucuronides was comparable to that of morphine, however, Jnet was lower due to lower plasma concentrations at time of maximal extraction. The findings demonstrate how the cerebral uptake and release of morphine and its metabolites can be studied with a method that is entirely non-invasive to the brain and permits very flexible sampling. Uptake and release of drug is observed directly and need not be inferred from cerebral concentration curves.

  • The cyanobacterium Synechococcus resists UV-B by exchanging photosystem II reaction-center D1 proteins
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 95:1, s. 364-369
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Current ambient UV-B levels can significantly depress productivity in aquatic habitats, largely because UV-B inhibits several steps of photosynthesis, including the photooxidation of water catalyzed by photosystem II, We show that upon UV-B exposure the cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp, PCC 7942 rapidly changes the expression of a family of three psbA genes encoding photosystem II D1 proteins, In wild-type cells the psbAI gene is expressed constitutively, but strong accumulations of psbAII and psbAIII transcripts are induced within 15 min of moderate UV-B exposure (0.4 W/m(2)), This transcriptional response causes an exchange of two distinct photosystem II D1 proteins, D1:1 is encoded by psbAI, but on UV-B exposure, it is largely replaced by the alternate D1:2 form, encoded by both psbAII and psbAIII, The total content of D1 and other photosystem II reaction center protein, D2, remained unchanged throughout the UV exposure, as did the content and composition of the phycobilisome, Wild-type cells suffered only slight transient inhibition of photosystem II function under UV-B exposure, In marked contrast, under the same UV-B treatment, a mutant strain expressing only psbAI suffered severe (40%) and sustained inhibition of photosystem II function, Another mutant strain with constitutive expression of psbAII and psbAIII was almost completely resistant to the UV-B treatment, showing no inhibition of photosystem II function and only a slight drop in electron transport, In Synechococcus the rapid exchange of alternate D1 forms, therefore, accounts for much of the cellular resistance to UV-B inhibition of photosystem II activity and photosynthetic electron transport, This molecular plasticity may be an important element in community-level responses to UV-B, where susceptibility to UV-B inhibition of photosynthesis changes diurnally.
