  • Looking through the kaleidoscope of inclusion in policy on students with intellectual disabilities
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Special Needs Education. - : Routledge. - 0885-6257 .- 1469-591X.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden, the Compulsory School for Students with Intellectual Disabilites (CSSID) is currently experiencing political change, as this type of school is being renamed and is undergoing organisational changes. The inclusion of children with intellectual disabilities (ID) in schooling, and in general society, has been challenged and debated for decades; such debates are at the heart of some of these changes. In this study, we have systematically investigated the policy work (e.g. government reports and statements) preceding and governing the changes. Hence, the purpose of the study is to contribute knowledge on how policy documents inscribe meaning to the inclusion of children with ID. Results show that discourses on inclusion are connected to neoliberal values and practices, such as assessment, global comparison, and accountability. It has been suggested that this may have a profound and long-term effect on how children with ID are fabricated and hence, how the child with ID and their education can be understood in terms of being included in the idea of ‘all students’ in policy, and in addition, in practice.

  • Predictors of re-employment : A question of attitude, behavior, or gender?
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Psychology. - : Wiley. - 0036-5564 .- 1467-9450. ; 56:4, s. 438-446
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This longitudinal study examined the predictive value of attitudes, personal-related variables, job search behaviour, and demographic variables on re-employment among 142 assembly workers who had been made redundant. Participants completed a questionnaire within a week after leaving their jobs, and another 15 months later. Results of hierarchical logistic regression revealed that gender (being male), was the strongest predictor of re-employment. Willingness to relocate and desire to change occupation also increased the odds of re-employment 15 months after dismissal. On the other hand - having children at home and anonymous-passive job-search behaviour, which is more prevalent among women, decreased the odds for re-employment. The study is contributing to research by revealing gender differences in job search behaviour and the importance of focusing qualitative differences instead of merely quantitative measures in job-search behaviour. And even more important, despite attitude and job-search behaviour, there is still differences that seems to be related to gender and family responsibility.

  • Firm-level effects of offshoring of materials and services on relative labor demand
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Review of World Economics. - : Springer. - 1610-2878 .- 1610-2886. ; 152:2, s. 321-350
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on firm-level data over the period 1997-2002 for the Swedish manufacturing sector the objective of this paper is to analyze relative labor demand effects due to offshoring, separating between materials and services offshoring and also geographical location of trade partner. Overall, our results give no support to the fears that offshoring of materials or services lead to out-location of high-skilled activity in Swedish firms. Rather, this paper finds evidence that the aggregate effects from offshoring lead to increasing relative demand of high-skilled labor, mainly due to services offshoring to middle income countries.

  • Labour Demand, Offshoring and Inshoring : Evidence from Swedish Firm-level Data
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The World Economy. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0378-5920 .- 1467-9701. ; 40:2, s. 240-274
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this paper was to analyse effects on firm–level relative demand for skilled labour due to imports of intermediates (offshoring) and exports of intermediates (inshoring). The study is based on a data set of Swedish manufacturing firms, 1997–2002, using trade flows in intermediate goods and services, respectively. Descriptive data show that goods inshoring is much larger than goods offshoring, while the reverse is true for services. There is, however, a strong increase in services inshoring over the study period. Controlling for potential endogeneity in offshoring and inshoring, our results indicate that there is a positive effect of services offshoring on the skill composition of workers in Swedish firms, while no such causality can be established from inshoring.

  • Fungerar konkurrensen på marknaden för slaktdjur?
  • 2015

  • A Reconsideration of Two "Welfare Paradises" : Research and Policy Responses to Men's Violence in Denmark and Sweden
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Men and Masculinities. - : Sage Publications. - 1097-184X .- 1552-6828. ; 12:2, s. 155-174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article compares the situation in Denmark and Sweden regarding research and policy making around the issue of men-s violence to women and children. It does so by drawing on two comprehensive reviews of academic and policy data in those countries that were part of a broader European Union-funded project. Although the picture emerging from this comparison is complex, the overall conclusion is that in Sweden over recent years many more examples can be found of a critical, power-oriented approach than is the case in Denmark.

  • A framework for automatic text generation of trends in physiological time series data
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, 13-16 Oct. 2013, Manchester. - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781479906529 - 9780769551548 ; , s. 3876-3881
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Health monitoring systems using wearable sensorshave rapidly grown in the biomedical community. The mainchallenges in physiological data monitoring are to analyse largevolumes of health measurements and to represent the acquiredinformation. Natural language generation is an effective methodto create summaries for both clinicians and patients as it candescribe useful information extracted from sensor data in textualformat. This paper presents a framework of a natural languagegeneration system that provides a text-based representation ofthe extracted numeric information from physiological sensorsignals. More specifically, a new partial trend detection algorithmis introduced to capture the particular changes and events ofhealth parameters. The extracted information is then representedconsidering linguistic characterisation of numeric features. Ex-perimental analysis was performed using a wearable sensor and demonstrates a possible output in natural language text.

  • Data mining for wearable sensors in health monitoring systems : a review of recent trends and challenges
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Sensors. - Basel : MDPI. - 1424-8220. ; 13:12, s. 17472-17500
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The past few years have witnessed an increase in the development of wearable sensors for health monitoring systems. This increase has been due to several factors such as development in sensor technology as well as directed efforts on political and stakeholder levels to promote projects which address the need for providing new methods for care given increasing challenges with an aging population. An important aspect of study in such system is how the data is treated and processed. This paper provides a recent review of the latest methods and algorithms used to analyze data from wearable sensors used for physiological monitoring of vital signs in healthcare services. In particular, the paper outlines the more common data mining tasks that have been applied such as anomaly detection, prediction and decision making when considering in particular continuous time series measurements. Moreover, the paper further details the suitability of particular data mining and machine learning methods used to process the physiological data and provides an overview of the properties of the data sets used in experimental validation. Finally, based on this literature review, a number of key challenges have been outlined for data mining methods in health monitoring systems

  • Descriptive Modelling of Clinical Conditions with Data-driven Rule Mining in Physiological Data
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 8th International conference of Health Informatics (HEALTHINF 2015). - Lisbon, Portugal : SciTePress. - 9789897580680
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an approach to automatically mine rules in time series data representing physiologicalparameters in clinical conditions. The approach is fully data driven, where prototypical patterns are mined foreach physiological time series data. The generated rules based on the prototypical patterns are then describedin a textual representation which captures trends in each physiological parameter and their relation to the otherphysiological data. In this paper, a method for measuring similarity of rule sets is introduced in order tovalidate the uniqueness of rule sets. This method is evaluated on physiological records from clinical classesin the MIMIC online database such as angina, sepsis, respiratory failure, etc.. The results show that the rulemining technique is able to acquire a distinctive model for each clinical condition, and represent the generatedrules in a human understandable textual representation
