  • Den engagerade reportern : Svenska sociala reportage 1910–2010
  • 2023. - 1
  • Book (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • Modality in Kazakh as Spoken in China
  • 2016
  • Book (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This is a comprehensive study on modality in one of the largest Turkic languages, Kazakh, as it is spoken in China. Kazakh is the official language of the Republic of Kazakhstan and is furthermore spoken by about one and a half million people in China in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and in Aksai Kazakh Autonomous County in Gansu Province. The method employed is empirical, i.e. data-oriented. The modal expressions in Kazakh are analyzed in a theoretical framework essentially based on the works of Lars Johanson. The framework defines semantic notions of modality from a functional and typological perspective. The modal volition, deontic evaluation, and epistemic evaluation express attitudes towards the propositional content and are conveyed in Kazakh by grammaticalized moods, particles and lexical devices. All these categories are treated in detail, and ample examples of their different usages are provided with interlinear annotation. The Kazakh expressions are compared with corresponding ones used in other Turkic languages. Contact influences of Uyghur and Chinese are also dealt with. The data used in this study include texts recorded by the author in 20102012, mostly in the northern regions of Xinjiang, as well as written texts published in Kazakhstan and China. The written texts represent different genres: fiction, non-fiction, poetry and texts published on the Internet. Moreover, examples have been elicited from native speakers of Kazakh and Uyghur. The Appendix contains nine texts recorded by the author in the Kazakh-speaking regions of Xinjiang, China. These texts illustrate the use of many of the items treated in the study.

  • "Becoming" a professional : an interdisciplinary analysis of professional learning
  • 2011
  • Book (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • ‘Becoming’ is used in this interdisciplinary work as an emergent, iterative concept of professional identity formation. The conceptual framework of ‘becoming’, as well as the arguments in the book are intended to encourage professionals—and those engaged in their education—to reflect on what it means to be a ‘professional’ in the twenty-first century, an era dominated by the discourses of globalisation, ‘new mangerialism’, multiculturalism and deprofessionalisation. We live in a world where not only scholars, but also a better educated client base informed by technological innovations, have issued unprecedented challenges to the traditional professional ideal. The once paradigmatic identity of the superiority of the Anglo-American professional, grounded in an exclusive knowledge-base and an altruistic ‘public-service’ principle, are no longer tenable. The book will generate dialogue about the nature of professionalism through a multidisciplinary lens in chapters on medicine, nursing and teaching and in reference to social work, the clergy and engineering. Here, becoming a professional is a lifelong, extended process that constructs an individual’s professional identity through formal education, workplace interactions and popular culture. It advocates the ‘ongoing’ modality of developing a professional self throughout one’s professional life. What emerges from this work is a concept of becoming a professional that is quite different from the isolated, rugged, individualistic approach to traditional professional practice as represented in popular culture. It is a book for the reflective professional.

  • Portraits of problembased learning : a cross faculty comparison of students' experiences
  • 2010
  • Book (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This book compares university students'experiences of problem-based learning in three professional educational programmes; Psychology, Engineering and Physiotherapy. Twenty students from each of the programmes were interviewed and the transcriptions subsequently subjeced to a qualitative analysis. The ways the different groups of students perceive of the characteristics of the pedagogical approach, the meaning and function of course objectives and their accounts of the varying approaches to studying in relation to course examinations, provide three distinct portraits of problem-based learning. The book suggests that the differences in how students perceive of the pedagogical approach reflect different perspectives of knowledge and learning embedded in their respective professional discipline. The book is challenging university teachers intending to implement problem-based learning in their courses to reflect on how their own epistemological standpoints impact on their views on learning and teaching.

  • Childism, Intersectionality and the Rights of the Child : The myth of a happy childhood
  • 2025
  • Book (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This book is the first to comprehensively develop the concept of childism to understand, study and analyse age-based discrimination against children. It presents a critical theory to help comprehend intersecting prejudice against children and to examine the weak implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), and in what ways violations against children can be analysed through the intersections of racist, sexist and ableist discrimination. The book further offers scholars a new perspective when studying structural forms of discrimination and oppression against children and provides professionals with a new vocabulary on prejudice targeting children when assessing theory, policy and praxis on ‘child-friendly’ and ‘child-centred’ initiatives that overlook the need to protect children against discrimination. This book will be of key interest to scholars, students and practitioners of human rights, child and youth studies, education, prejudice studies, the United Nations and child law, and more broadly to sociology, social policy, psychology, and social work.
