    • Room temperature surface emission is realized on a large area (1.5 mm x 1.5 mm) photonic crystal quantum cascade laser (PhC-QCL) driven under pulsed mode, at the wavelength around 8.75 mu m. By introducing in-plane asymmetry to the pillar shape and optimizing the current injection with a grid-like window contact, the maximum peak power of the PhC-QCL is up to 5 W. The surface emitting beam has a crossing shape with 10 degrees divergence.

    • This article is a part of an ongoing study, the purpose of which is to map masculinities under transformation in late nineteenth-century Polish prose, and particularly in the works of Henryk Sienkiewicz, Bolesław Prus, Stefan Żeromski, and Wacław Berent. Drawing on developments taking place in society at that time, the article explores the new types of literary heroes that appear in Polish literature toward the end of the nineteenth century: the decadent antihero, the aristocrat Leon Płoszowski as well as “newcomers” to the capitalist society, the “New Men,” Stanisław Wokulski, Tomasz Judym, and Kazimierz Zaliwski. The article argues that, even though the new models of masculinity that the protagonists represent pose a certain challenge to the prevailing romantic models, the characters remain entrapped in literary conventions that inscribe specific gender roles on literary heroes.

  • Effect of Lignocaine on IL-6, IL-8, and MCP-1 in Peritoneal Macrophages and Endometriotic Stromal Cells

    • Objective: The objective was to evaluate the effect of lignocaine on cytokine expression and secretion in vitro in peritoneal fluid macrophages and endometriotic stromal cells. Design: Experimental in vitro study on human cells. Population and Sample: Peritoneal fluid (n = 10) and samples from endometriotic cysts (n = 7) were collected from 13 women (women with endometriosis n = 8, and healthy controls n = 5) during surgery for clinical reasons. Methods: Macrophages from the peritoneal fluid and cells from the inside of the endometriotic cysts capsules were isolated and cultivated for 24 to 48 hours in medium with and without the supplement of lignocaine 0.1 or 1.0 mg/mL. Relative gene expression of monocyte chemotactic protein 1 (MCP-1), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and IL-8 was evaluated with quantitative polymerase chain reaction and compared between treated and untreated cells with Wilcoxon matched pairs. The concentrations of MCP-1, IL-6, and IL-8 were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and were compared between treated and untreated cells with Wilcoxon matched pairs. Results: The gene expression and protein secretion of IL-8 in endometriotic stromal cells after incubation with lignocaine 0.1 mg/mL were significantly decreased after 24 hours compared to the controls (P =.028 and P =.018). Macrophages from healthy controls had a significant lower gene expression of all tested cytokines (P =.043) after treatment with lignocaine, but there were no significant differences in protein level. Macrophages from women with endometriosis showed diverging results since 3 of 5 samples showed increased gene expression of 1 (n = 2) or 2 cytokines (n = 1) after lignocaine treatment. Conclusion: Lignocaine can affect the gene expression and secretion of some proinflammatory cytokines in vitro.

    • The purpose of the present thesis was to investigate Basic Body Awareness Therapy (Basic BAT) in psychiatric outpatient care and the BAS-H, an assessment method for analysing movements and movement behaviour. Important factors in the interaction, therapeutic relationship and working alliance between patient and physiotherapist (PT) were also explored. The results revealed the construct validity of the BAS-H assessment to be adequate and in accordance with theoretical expectations. The responsiveness to change of the BAS-H assessment was also found to be acceptable after a short-term treatment with Basic BAT. The Basic BAT treatment in addition to treatment as usual as compared to treatment as usual only, in a study comprising 77 patients in psychiatric outpatient care, turned out to be effective in the short-term perspective. Improvements with regard to the quality of movements and movement behaviour, psychiatric symptoms and attitudes towards the body and movement and self-efficacy were found in the group receiving Basic BAT. Interaction between patient and PT was considered to be important to outcome and the activation of the patients? resources according to nominated expert PTs working in both primary health-care and psychiatric care. The patients? experience of Basic BAT in psychiatric care revealed that improvements of balance and posture were the most commonly reported experiences. Personal involvement and the ability to practise alone characterised the patients reporting the most profound improvements in bodily, psychological and social terms. The working alliance construct was found to be useful in the analysis of interaction in physiotherapy.

  • Reciprocal interactions between adenosine A2A and dopamine D2 receptors in Chinese hamster ovary cells co-transfected with the two receptors

    • Human adenosine A2A and rat dopamine D2 receptors (A2A and D2 receptors) were co-transfected in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells to study the interactions between two receptors that are co-localized in striatopallidal gamma-aminobutyric acid-(GABA)ergic neurons. Membranes from transfected cells showed a high density of D2 (3.6 pmol per mg protein) and A2A receptors (0.56 pmol per mg protein). The D2 receptors were functional: an agonist, quinpirole, could stimulate GTPgammaS binding and reduce stimulated adenylyl cyclase activity. The A2A receptor agonist 2-p-(2-carboxyethyl)phenethylamino-5'-N-ethylcarboxamidoadenosine (CGS 21680) decreased high-affinity binding of the agonist dopamine at D2 receptors. Activation of adenosine A2A receptors shifted the dose-response curve for quinpirole on adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) to the right. However, CGS 21680 did not affect dopamine D2 receptor-induced GTPgammaS binding, but did cause a concentration-dependent increase in cAMP accumulation. The maximal cAMP response was decreased by the D2 agonist quinpirole in a concentration-dependent manner, but there was no change in EC50 and no effect in cells transfected only with adenosine A2A receptors. A2A receptor activation also increased phosphorylation of cAMP response element-binding protein and expression of c-fos mRNA. These effects were also strongly counteracted by quinpirole. These results show that the antagonistic actions between adenosine A2A and dopamine D2 receptors noted previously in vivo can also be observed in CHO cells where the two receptors are co-transfected. Thus, no brain cell-specific factors are required for such interactions. Furthermore, the interaction at the second messenger level and beyond may be quantitatively more important than A2A receptor-mediated inhibition of high affinity D2 agonist binding to the receptor.
