- The first purpose of this study was to verify the relationship between workplace health and quality management, particularly the values ‘leadership commitment’ and ‘participation of everybody’ whose importance previous research has pointed to. The second purpose of the study was to examine the constituents and mechanics of the relationships between health and those values. A case study was carried out in a Swedish manufacturing company using data triangulation in the form of in-depth interviews and focus-group interviews on three levels. The findings show that the perceptions of the quality management values were significantly correlated with the employees’ perception of their health. This finding substantiates earlier studies indicating a relationship between quality and health. Important dimensions of ‘leadership commitment’ and ‘participation of everybody’, regarding health, were identified and described in models. The paper provides additional understanding of the connection between quality management and health, particularly regarding the role of leadership.

- The development of national parks and other protected areas has been widely promoted because of its potential for regional development in peripheral and sparsely populated areas. The argument is that the economic and social benefits seen in national parks in the USA and UK will also occur in the Swedish context in the form of an increased tourism-related labor market. Our aim was to analyze the possibility of such a development both in light of the policy visions of positive regional and local development and from the adversary point of view that protection of land is making it more difficult for 15 sparsely populated mountain municipalities in Sweden to prosper. We used a database covering the entire population of the area for 1991 to 2001. Our results show that factors other than the protected areas are connected to the development of a tourism labor market. The most positively correlated variables for change in tourism employment are population growth and proximity to ski lifts. Positive population development is also correlated to a positive change in the number of people employed in forest sectors. Thus, one of the main outcomes is that the assumed and almost automatic positive relation between nature conservation and tourism can is questionable.

Our ambition has been to present several different perspectives and understandings related to the ongoing process of change, a charting of where Swedish research in the field stands today. The themes dsicussed from a critical perspective are: The Citizen's Space for Action, Space for Design Action, Space for Action Concerning Regulation and Leadership and finally Providing Space for a Multitude of Interpretations and Roles.

Challenges in Delivering Services: The Front-Line Hospitality and Tourism Employee Perspective

- Significant challenges are faced by front-line hospitality and tourism employees interacting with customers on a daily basis. These challenges and the ways they are dealt with form the focus of this thesis. As they interact, a range of incidents may arise from highly satisfactory encounters to service failures. It has been argued that in order to achieve satisfactory service encounters, employees need to feel in control, satisfied and motivated as well as being given appropriate assistance, information and training. Front-line employees in hospitality and tourism are focused on here due to the complex nature of the industry. It is commonly agreed that it is characterised by poor working conditions such as anti-social working hours, part-time and/or seasonal work, minimal on-the-job training and low levels of pay. These are all factors which may affect employee work satisfaction and motivation as well as recruitment and retention. The thesis is comprised of four studies. In Study I, hospitality and tourism employee work motivation is analysed. Study II examines front-line hotel restaurant employees’ experiences of service encounters. How the skills utilised by employees during these service encounters are acquired and developed is then explored in Study III. Study IV concludes by examining employee informal information sharing activities, which offer one way of developing these skills. The thesis’ findings paint a more positive picture of work and workers in hospitality and tourism than suggested in some of the earlier published research. This could be explained by the fact that the thesis utilises an employee perspective in its truest sense. The findings of the thesis show that employees are motivated (to large extent by factors that have been pointed out in earlier published work motivation research) and that they are active in the pursuit of developing skills necessary to create satisfactory service encounters. Another conclusion of the thesis’ findings is that the interaction between workers and guests in the service encounter provides an important opportunity for workers to feel satisfied at work.

- Access to countryside areas – by means of personal ownership, designated areas or free access – is fundamental to outdoor recreation and nature tourism. This paper examines the role of the Right of Public Access for public participation in outdoor recreation and nature tourism supply in Sweden. This right can be seen both as a “free space” for recreation and a way of restricting land ownership. Our study shows that the Right of Public Access has strong support among the Swedish public in general and that designated areas for recreation are less important than public access for outdoor recreation participation. Among nature tourism entrepreneurs, the Right of Public Access is considered a success factor to a much higher extent than an obstacle. We identify a tension between the general public and nature tourism entrepreneurs with respect to traditional backcountry activities such as hiking, cross‐country skiing and nature studies. One important challenge for the future will be to balance the demand for outdoor recreation with nature tourism opportunities for local economic development, and the paper concludes with a set of topics suggested for further discussion concerning the Right of Public Access in a dynamic world

- Purpose – The purpose of this chapter is to provide a review of literaturethat analyses the internationalisation of the firm, through the function androle of networks.Design/methodology/approach – A total of 23 papers (published between1988 and 2008) explicitly using network as a research framework to studythe internationalisation process of the firm were selected. They have beenanalysed according to a range of factors, including the author, journal,time frame in which they were published, type of focal firm, country oforigin of focal firms, market entered, methods applied in the studies,theories adopted and research topic.Findings – Networks have emerged as one of the dominant frameworksused to explain the phenomenon of internationalisation. Having originallybeen applied in studies of firms from developed countries entering similarmarkets, network theories are now as popular in studies of firms bothoriginating in and entering emerging markets. This review also finds thatboth qualitative and quantitative methods have been adopted in thestudies; however, few papers have tried to combine the two. Furthermore,the network approach has been used for comparative analysis withfindings from FDI theory, as well as to supplement international newventure (INV) and born global theories. Lastly, this review highlightstopics that have been explored in previous studies and suggests areas forfurther research.Originality/value – This is the first review paper on this subject and assuch it contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the networkapproach and assists in understanding the internationalisation phenomenonof the firm.

- Il lavoro analizza la pratica emergente dell’imprenditorialità collettiva e adotta un modello reticolare di marketing management nelle piccole e medie imprese. L’uso del- la cooperazione e delle alleanze tra attori locali ha ottenuto una crescente attenzione ed è stato indicato come strategia per affrontare la competizione globale, in particolare nel business delle destinazioni turistiche. L’obiettivo dell’articolo è di elaborare modelli di marketing per le PMI turistiche. Il problema è considerato nella prospettiva imprenditoriale, di marketing e del network. L’indagine svolta si basa su un case study di un network di hotel, nel contesto di un comune svedese. L’autore ha condotto interviste in profondità con i proprietari e i dirigenti alberghieri e con le autorità locali. Dall’indagine emerge una potente rete di connessioni tra gli attori locali, evidenziando l’impatto dell’imprenditorialità collettiva al fine di ottenere uno sviluppo positivo del business.

- The majority of today’s information and communication technology (ICT) impact studies disregard infrastructural, organizational, and environmental factors typically responsible for successful e-business adoption and use. This article proposes an empirical approach that shows how the mentioned factors determine both e-business adoption and the impact of information and communication technologies. The research framework is based on E. Rogers’ Innovation Diffusion Theory and is tested with survey data gathered in the Austrian destination management organization sector. By referring to K. Zhu and K. L. Kraemer’s (2005) e-business impact model, the proposed approach explicates how the use of e-business applications may positively affect the performance of tourism organizations. Online survey data are analyzed through a linear structural equation modeling approach.

- In this paper we focus on production chains, i.e., on intermediate commodities, in Swedish manufacturing. Based on input output data for the two years 2000 and 2005, we investigate the input change of the intermediate import shares. The result is that the share of intermediate imports has increased in important sectors. The conclusion is that the globalisation process has affected the production system in the Swedish economy. Finally the problem of adjustment and economic strategy are discussed.
