  • Energy gaps, electronic structures, and x-ray spectroscopies of finite semiconductor single-walled carbon nanotubes
  • 2008
  • In: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 128:8, s. 084707-1-084707-8
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We report hybrid density functional theory calculations for electronic structures of hydrogen-terminated finite single-walled carbon nanotubes (6,5) and (8,3) up to 100 nm in length. Gap states that are mainly arisen from the hydrogen-terminated edges have been found in (8,3) tubes, but their contributions to the density of states become invisible when the tube is longer than 10 nm. The electronic structures of (6,5) and (8,3) tubes are found to be converged around 20 nm. The calculated band-gap energies of 100 nm long nanotubes are in good agreement with experimental results. The valence band structures of (6,5), (8,3), as well as (5,5) tubes are also investigated by means of ultraviolet photoelectron spectra (UPS), x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), and the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra theoretically. The UPS, XES and RIXS spectra become converged already at 10 nm. The length-dependent oscillation behavior is found in the RIXS spectra of (5,5) tubes, indicating that the RIXS spectra may be used to determine the size and length of metallic nanotubes. Furthermore, the chiral dependence observed in the simulated RIXS spectra suggests that RIXS spectra could be a useful technique for the determination of chirality of carbon nanotubes.

  • Mental Disorders in Peyronie's Disease : A Swedish Cohort Study of 3.5 Million Men
  • 2021
  • In: Journal of Urology. - : American Urological Association, Inc.. - 0022-5347 .- 1527-3792. ; 205:3, s. 864-869
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • PURPOSE: Studies have shown that men with Peyronie's disease often suffer from psychological problems, but the psychiatric burden of this disorder remains largely unknown. We assessed risks of a range of psychiatric outcomes in a population-based, Swedish cohort comprising 3.5 million men.MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal cohort study based on Swedish national registers. A total of 8,105 men diagnosed with Peyronie's disease and 3.5 million comparison subjects from the general Swedish population were selected, and followed-up for diagnosed psychiatric outcomes, including substance use disorder, alcohol misuse, anxiety disorder, depression, and self-injurious behaviors. Risks of psychiatric outcomes were estimated with Cox regressions, and additionally adjusted for birth year.RESULTS: Men with Peyronie's disease had increased risks of being diagnosed with substance use disorder; hazard ratio (HR) 1.4, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.1-1.9, no excess risk of alcohol misuse; HR 0.9, CI 0.8-1.1, but elevated risks of anxiety disorder; HR 1.9, CI 1.6-2.2, depression; HR 1.7, CI 1.5-2.0, self-injurious behaviors; HR 2.0, 95% CI 1.7-2.3, as well as any psychiatric outcomes; HR 1.4, 95% CI 1.2-1.5. The risk estimates were slightly decreased when adjusted for birth year. A limitation of the study was that we had no information about Peyronie's disease diagnoses assigned before year 1997.CONCLUSIONS: Men with Peyronie's disease are at increased risk of being diagnosed with adverse psychiatric outcomes. Health care providers should ensure that men with Peyronie's disease have a documented mental health status assessment.

  • Some design recommendations to improve comfort in helmets : a case study from China
  • 1996
  • In: Journal of Human Ergology. - 0300-8134. ; 25:2, s. 145-154
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Unless the basic user needs are satisfied in safety helmets, it is difficult to get workers to wear them habitually and for long periods. Hotness, weight and fitting problems are major wearability issues that require improvements. The enormous need for an optimally designed helmet in China prompted a case study on comfort aspects in helmets. The subjective impressions of the wearers of test helmets provided useful information for design changes to improve comfort. The heat transfer measurements through helmets indicated the need for ventilation openings to be provided on the shell of plastic helmets. Due to the advantage of low weight and good ventilation, it is recommended that cane helmets be further developed to improve protection, wearability and durability, and subsequently be produced in large scale
