  • Primary Measures to Reduce the Emissions of Nitrogen Oxide in Circulating Fluidized Bed Boilers

    • During the combustion of coal in a circulating fluidized bed boiler the conversion of the fuel­bond nitrogen to either nitrogen oxides or nitro­gen can be influenced by design and operational measures. The paper gives a summary of results obtained in a series of tests on a 40 MW circulating fluid­ized bed boiler in Nykoping, designed by Gota­verken Energy. In this commercial boiler it was not possible to study the influence of primary to secondary air addition independent of thebed temperature. For this reason, a smaller boiler designed by the same manufacturer was adapted to permit independent variations of the primary air ratio and the bed temperature. The results from the 40 MW and the 8 MW boilers are compared and the influence of the distribution of the air supply and of the bed temperature on the reduction of nitrogen oxide emissions are dis­cussed.

    • An account is given of the first attempts to reduce the emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) from atmospherc fluidized bed combustion. Four methods are considered: 1) Rise of bed temperature and change of air supply to the combustion chamber, 2) Use of catalysts in the combustion chamber, 3) Rise of the flue gas temperature downstream of the combustion chamber 4) Low excess air. Methods 1) and 2) tensd to raise other emisions, such as NO and SO2, as the N2O emission is reduced, and method 4) only gives a small contribution to N2O reduction. Afterburning (Method 3) does not affect SO2 and reduces somewhat the NO and CO emissions at the same time sa N2O is removed, but requires an additional fuel and a correspondinf combustion chamber. An example is given of the use of the cyclone of a circulating fluidized bed as an additional combustion chamber.

    • This presentation informs on the FBC Implementing Agreement, its field of interest, its activities and membership countries. In short, the activities consist of two meetings per year where information on fluidized bed conversion (mainly combustion and gasification) is exchanged between the participants from 15 different countries. The last meeting took place in the Czech Republic in March 2013. Initially, a few decades ago, the focus was on the design of coal-fired FB combustors. This was followed by an engagement in the behavior of various fuels, environmental and operational issues, which still remains a topic of interest. This includes both small and large FB conversion devices, combustors and gasifiers. At present, an important route of development goes in the direction of CO2 removal, where FBC shows itself to be an extremely useful technology: co-combustion and gasification, oxy-fuel combustion, calcium looping cycle and chemical looping combustion. Such topics, and related environmental and operational problems, including the behavior of different fuels, are within the range of interest of the activities, depending on the selection of topics made by the members of the implementing agreement.

    • Methods for scaling of fluidized-bed combustors are reviewed. It is found that a general scaling methodology, including simultaneously fluid dynamic and combustion scaling can not be carried out in practical scaling tests. Some kind of simplification is needed. The approach followed here is to differentiate between fluid dynamic scaling, combustion scaling, both related to the basic equations describing the phenomena, and boiler scaling that means scale-up from one boiler size to another, where established design elements can be utilized in the scaling procedure.

It is shown how thw Damköhler number, expressing the ration of conversion time to transport time, can be used as a tool for simplified scaling. An example is given from tests of desulphurisation in relation to design of circulating fluidized bed boilers

    • Important features for numerical investigation of the fluid dynamics of industrially-sized fluidized-bed converters are investigated. Emphasis is put on the significance of inlet boundary conditions for simulations of the units. Simulations of a stationary fluidized bed are carried out as a step towards computations of a circulating fluidized-bed reactor. The simulations are based on an Eulerian approach, using the kinetic theory of granular flow. The results are compared with time-averaged measurements (mean concentration of particles) and local instantaneous pressure measurements. The simulations show satisfactory agreement with experiments, which demonstrates that the assumption of a uniform inlet gas flow over the air distributor is not appropriate in numerical studies of beds operated under the conditions of industrial units. It is concluded that fluctuations in pressure and flow in the air-supply system have to be taken into account when formulating the inlet conditions for the calculations.
