  • 31 recommendations for increased profit - reducing waste
  • 2010
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Those companies and organizations that wish to ensure long-term profitability must successively decrease resource use in both product development and in product usage. Primarily, it is waste that must be reduced, i.e. the consumption of resources that do not add to customer value or to the organization. Waste is widespread in all operations. Even in well-functioning processes, more than half of the resource consumption can be classified as waste. One obstacle to waste elimination is that most waste is hidden. Thus, executives, middle management and specialists must prioritize efforts to uncover the waste in their operations.Building and construction activities consist of a complex system of decisions, components, organizations and processes that must be coordinated. There are therefore many explanations as to why waste arises, or does not. Based on a series of discussions with experienced builders, consultants, contractors and materials providers, five main groups of factors that characterize effective operations were found. In this report these factors are illustrated in the form of a “value pyramid”. A holistic view of long-term customer benefits is the apex of the pyramid. Structure, competence, leadership and culture act as the driving forces at each corner of the pyramid’s foundation. Should one of the corners gives way, then the pyramid risks toppling over. With the value pyramid as support, 31 recommendations for what should be done to reduce waste are presented. These are aimed at standardizing the product from an overall perspective (five recommendations), defining and standardizing processes (ten recommendations), developing the organization and its competence (seven recommendations), disciplining management (five recommendations), and driving continuous improvement work (four recommendations). Reducing uncertainties and increasing effective time utilization are the red threads, as the Swedes would say, that run through all the recommendations.Everyone who uses resources has a responsibility to reduce waste. By systematically monitoring one’s own use of time, one can gain insights that will help improve one’s work situation. However, the burden of initiating and driving improvements overall obviously lies with management. How this should be done depends on the nature and purpose of the activities as well as on the organization’s capabilities. It is to manage this progress and achieve profitability that managers are appointed. It is in the interest of all enterprises and organizations to develop the ability and an interest to detect and understand what work/task is value adding what is not. This ability will provide possibilities to develop new competitive advantages and new business concepts.

  • Direct carrier quadrature modulator and Demodulator MMICs for 60 GHz gigabit wireless communications
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Asia-Pacific Microwave Conference Proceedings (APMC 2011; Melbourne, VIC; 5 - 8 December 2011). - 9780858259744 ; , s. 1134-1137
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A 60 GHz direct carrier quadrature modulator is designed and fabricated in 0.15 μm mHEMT technology. The design is based on passive mixers and therefore reciprocal which makes it possible to be used both as modulator and demodulator. The modulator has an input bandwidth of 0-5 GHz on each of the I and Q ports and an RF bandwidth of 53-68 GHz. Carrier leakage to the output port is eliminated by addition of an inductive path from the LO port to the RF port. The modulator requires 5 dBm LO power and can output up to -6 dBm RF power in linear region and up to -4 dBm when driven into saturation. When operated as an SSB mixer, the conversion loss is measured to be 11 dB and image and LO signals are suppressed by as much as 30 dB compared to the desired signal. For demonstration, a pair of the presented modulator/demodulator is used to transmit 7Gbps BPSK signal over 1m and 10Gbps QPSK signal over 0.5m wireless link.

  • Analysis of High-Frequency Electrical Transients in Offshore Wind Parks
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this thesis, a study of high frequency electromagnetic transient phenomena is performed. Models of various components needed for simulations of high frequency transients, such as for transformers, cables and breakers are developed. Measurements were performed in Chalmers research laboratory as well as at ABB Corporate Research in Västerås, Sweden for the purpose of parameter estimation of models and for verification of simulations. Critical cases where the voltage surges of the magnitude and/or rise time above basic lightning impulse voltage level appear, are identified. Also, some transient protection schemes are analyzed and the performance of different transient mitigation devices is studied. Furthermore, the voltage distribution along the winding during very fast transients is studied in order to estimate turn-to-turn voltages and the critical voltage envelope. In the work it was found that simulations of the high frequency transients are in a very good agreement with the measurements obtained in the laboratory. Simulations predicted accurately critical surges with the highest magnitude and matched with good accuracy surge waveforms recorded during the measurements. The accuracy of the rise times is within 10%, while the magnitudes during the critical cases are within a 5% margin. During the testing and simulations, surges which exceed the basic lightning impulse voltage level of dry-type transformers specified by IEEE standards, both in magnitude and rise time are observed at the transformers even when surge arresters are used to protect the transformers. Furthermore, obtained voltage surges exceeded the proposed critical voltage envelope. It is shown that the most critical voltage strikes are obtained with dry-type transformers, where the rise time is five to ten times shorter compared to oil-insulated transformer with the same rating. It was confirmed both in simulations and measurements that the use of additional transient protections devices such as surge capacitors and RC protections, decreased the magnitude of surges to be below the critical level. The analysis of the voltage during very fast transients showed that the rise time of the transients directly influences the magnitude of the turn-to-turn voltages. Furthermore, during the breaker closing transient, turn-to-turn voltages, measured in delta connected dry-type transformers, were 2.5 times higher than the voltages obtained during the same transient with a wye connected dry-type transformer, or during the stress with a 4.4 p.u. lightning impulse voltage.

  • Development of Vortex Filament Method for Aerodynamic Loads on Rotor Blades
  • 2013
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Wind power is currently one of the most reliable new energy sources serving as an alternative tofossil fuel generated electricity and is known as a widely distributed clean and renewable sourceof energy. It is now the world’s fastest growing energy source and has also become one of themost rapidly expanding industries. The aerodynamics of a wind turbine are governed by the flow around the rotor, where theprediction of air loads on rotor blades in different operational conditions and its relation to rotorstructural dynamics is crucial for design purposes. One of the most important challenges in windturbine aerodynamics is therefore to accurately predict the forces on the blade, where the bladeand wake are modeled by different approaches such as the Blade Element Momentum (BEM)theory, the vortex method and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Here, the application ofthe vortex filament method for wind turbine aerodynamic performance is used. Different blademodels such as the lifting line and the lifting surface with prescribed and free wake models arestudied. The main purpose is to find the proper combination of blade and wake models for theaerodynamic loads as well as the computational time in order to develop an accurate and efficientaerodynamic tool. The results of the different approaches are compared with the BEM methodand GENUVP code (see the acknowledgments).

  • Study of an Air Cavity in Water Tunnel
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 14th Numerical Towing Tank Symposium, Poole, UK.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • To study the resistance reduction of an air cavity for a displacement vessels, a simplified model of a cavity is simulated using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) and model tests. Initial CFD computation have been performed to design the model tests and the model tests will subsequently be used to validate the CFD simulations. The length of the cavity is approximately 2.5 times the expected wavelength of the water-air interface and the Froude number based on the cavity length is 0.2. Parameters like pressure play important role in the wave’s shape and the stability of the water surface inside the cavity. Computation shows that the amplitude of the wave is sensitive to the air pressure in the cavity and the re-attachment of the water to the rear end of the cavity has a close correlation to the inlet air pressure. The ultimate goal of this investigation is to minimize air supply while reducing resistance in/around the cavity, but equally important is it to gain a more basic understanding of the air-cavity’s behavior and possible additional resistance components.
