  • Proceedings of the Resilience Engineering Workshop, 25-27 June, 2007, Vadstena, Sweden
  • 2007
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Resilience Engineering is a new approach to safety and risk management. Whereas conventional approaches to system safety are dominated by hindsight and emphasize error tabulation and probabilistic risk analysis, Resilience Engineering emphasizes an organisations ability to adjust its functioning, prior to or following changes and disturbances, so that it can sustain operations even after a major mishap or in the presence of continuous stress.A common description of a resilient system is a system that has:the ability to respond, quickly and efficiently, to regular disturbances and threats, the ability to monitor continuously for irregular disturbances and threats, and to revise the basis for monitoring when needed, andthe ability to anticipate future changes in the environment that may affect the system’s ability to function, and the willingness to prepare against these changes even if the outcome is uncertain.Resilience engineering provides the methods by which a system’s resilience can be gauged or measured, and the means by which a system’s resilience can be improved. Resilience has for many decades proven to be a useful construct in analyzing the persistence, stability and flexibility of ecological systems. The Resilience Engineering workshop is organised by the Cognitive Systems Engineering Laboratory at the Department of Computer and Information Science, Linköping University. The workshop is an opportunity to discuss Resilience Engineering and its implications for research and practice in, among other disciplines, system safety, risk analysis, system design, and accident analysis

  • Proceedings of Turbine-99 : workshop on draft tube flow
  • 2000
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Turbine 99 workshop, held in Porjus, Sweden, 20-23 June 1999, was organized to determine the state-of-the-art of CFD simulations of draft tube flows. A total of 16 groups accepted the invitation to compute the draft tube flow. The following experimental data was available before the workshop: the axial and swirl velocity components at the inlet (with rms-values and one Reynolds' stress component) and the pressure distribution around the outlet cross section. Before the workshop, the groups submitted simulation results (using 12 different CFD codes) which were compiled by the organizers to an extensive set of data available at the workshop. The experimental data for the pressure recovery factor, pressure distributions along the draft tube walls and the detailed velocity field in one downstream cross section was presented during the workshop. In this report a summary of the main results and conclusions of the workshop is given, together with the written reports from the experiments and the simulations. In addition, the report contains all relevant background information for the workshop such as the draft tube geometry, provided data, requested information etc. and is thus the main document from the workshop. As the simulations provided more data than was available for comparison with the experiments, the simulation results will be available in a separate document provided by the organizers. One major conclusion of the workshop is that much attention must (still) be payed to the grid quality and the boundary conditions, factors that need to be strictly specified before a fully relevant comparison can be made between different flow models.

  • Processes in third language acquisition
  • 2009
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This volume brings together six case studies of an adult multilingual speaker who acquires a new language through social interaction. The book deals especially with the multilingual situation, the learner’s acquisitional activities, and the involvement of her background languages in the process of speaking. It offers a coherent study of various linguistic phenomena in one individual, including patterns and functions of language switching, word search in interaction, hypothetical construction of words, and articulatory settings in speaking. The main languages involved are English (L1), German (L2) and Swedish (L3). The activation of these languages in the learner’s speech is examined in a cognitive perspective in relation to current models of the speaking process. A longitudinal corpus of NNS–NS conversations covering 21 months from the beginner stage provides the main data for these studies.
