  • Reactivity measurements of coke particles in five different flow reactors
  • 1990
  • Ingår i: Rivista dei Combustibili. - 0370-5463. ; 44:10, s. 257-267
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Experiments on reactivity of 128 μm coke particles in the gas temperature range from 1150 K to 1370 K have been performed in five different flow reactors in the Nordic countries and all the results were calculated by the shrinking particle model. The activation energy is found to be 25 kcal/mol indicating combustion control by the combined effects of chemical kinetic and pore diffusion (zone II combustion). The overall apparent reaction order was found to be 1.0

  • Complement, neutrophil, and macrophage activation in women with severe preeclampsia and the syndrome of hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count.
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Obstetrics and gynecology. - 0029-7844. ; 79:1, s. 19-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Activation of complement, neutrophils, and macrophages was studied in 14 women with severe preeclampsia, 11 of whom had the syndrome of hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count; in 14 women with normal pregnancies; in seven normal pregnant women undergoing cesarean deliveries; and in 15 healthy nonpregnant women. Activation of complement, neutrophils, and macrophages was measured by plasma determinations of complement split products, polymorphonuclear (PMN) elastase, and neopterin, respectively. Women with severe preeclampsia had increased levels of C5a, terminal complement complex, PMN elastase, and neopterin at delivery and 1 day postpartum as compared with the normal pregnant group. One week postpartum, neopterin remained higher in preeclamptic women, whereas the complement components and PMN elastase had returned to normal. Cesarean delivery after normal pregnancy did not increase the levels of complement split products, PMN elastase (except for one value), or neopterin. The nonpregnant women had normal PMN elastase and neopterin levels. Accordingly, complement, neutrophils, and macrophages are activated in women with severe preeclampsia at delivery. The plasma levels of PMN elastase correlated positively to the formed terminal complement complexes in vivo. An in vitro study was performed to elucidate further the connection between complement and leukocyte activation. Recombinant C5a incubated in whole blood and in a neutrophil cell suspension gave a dose-dependent release of PMN elastase. Both the clinical and the in vitro results indicate that activation of the complement system may affect the function of neutrophils. This study supports the theory that the pathologic manifestations of severe preeclampsia may be explained by complement-induced release of biologically active substances from activated leukocytes.

  • Computer Aided Participatory Planning
  • 1990
  • Ingår i: Ergonomics of Hybrid Automated Systems II. ; , s. 69-76
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A computer aided action research method for design of work places is presented. A project group of researchers, managers, union representatives, supervisors, shop-floor workers and representatives from the health-and-safety department analyse different aspects of the physical and organizational work environment. Factory layouts and the flow of raw materials and goods, truck routes and overhead crane movements are shown on a computer screen by means of simulation and animation techniques. Field studies at four companies strongly suggest that the animation helps the members in the project group to develop a common language and to better comprehend what a future factory design and work organization would look like.

  • Water balance for landfills of different age
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Journal of Hydrology. - 0022-1694 .- 1879-2707. ; 158:3-4, s. 203-217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Water-related processes in landfills are discussed with emphasis on internal processes such as field capacity, moisture variation in time and space, and macropore flow. Runoff production and evaporation from landfills in Sweden of different age are investigated. It is clarified in what ways and for how long a closed municipal landfill differs from an ordinary land area from a hydrological point of view.

  • Viral haemorrhagic fever in Sweden : experiences from management of a case.
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Infectious Diseases. - 0036-5548 .- 1651-1980. ; 23:2, s. 143-151
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first recognized case in Scandinavia with potential man to man transmission of viral haemorrhagic fever occurred in Linköping, Sweden, in January 1990. Following a visit to Kenya a 21-year-old male student suffered a very severe illness including extremely prolonged high grade fever, rash, disseminated intravascular coagulation with thrombocytopenia and severe bleedings. This necessitated one month of intensive care support including respirator treatment. The patient was discharged after 2 1/2 months in good condition, with a partial femoral nerve paresis. About 100 medical personnel were exposed to aerosol or blood before a strict containment regimen was established. No secondary cases occurred.

  • Release of lipoprotein lipase to plasma by triacylglycerol emulsions. Comparison to the effect of heparin.
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Biochimica et Biophysica Acta. - 0006-3002 .- 1878-2434. ; 1125:1, s. 97-103
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It was previously known that lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity in plasma rises after infusion of a fat emulsion. To explore the mechanism we have compared the release of LPL by emulsion to that by heparin. After bolus injections of a fat emulsion (Intralipid) to rats, plasma LPL activity gradually rose 5-fold to a maximum at 6-8 min. During the same time the concentration of injected triacylglycerols (TG) decreased by about half. Hence, the time-course for plasma LPL activity was quite different from that for plasma TG. The disappearance of injected 125I-labelled bovine LPL from circulation was retarded by emulsion. This effect was more marked 30 min than 3 min after injection of the emulsion. The data indicate that the release of LPL into plasma is not solely due to binding of the lipase to the emulsion particles as such, but involves metabolism of the particles. Emulsion increased the fraction of labelled LPL found in adipose tissue, heart and the red muscle studied, but had no significant effect on the fraction found in liver. The effects of emulsion were quite different from those of heparin, which caused an immediate release of the lipase to plasma, decreased uptake of LPL in most extrahepatic tissues by 60-95%, and increased the fraction taken up in the liver.

  • New aspects on heparin and lipoprotein metabolism.
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Haemostasis. - 0301-0147 .- 1423-0038. ; 23 Suppl 1, s. 150-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and hepatic lipase (HL) are two enzymes which participate in metabolism of plasma lipoproteins. The enzymes are located at vascular surfaces and are released from their binding sites on injection of heparin. In this paper we give a short overview of the structure of the lipases and their role in lipoprotein metabolism. Earlier studies had shown that low molecular weight (LMW) heparin preparations result in lower LPL activities in blood than do corresponding amounts of conventional heparin. Studies with organ perfusion in rats show that the two types of heparin have similar ability to release the lipases from their binding sites in extrahepatic tissues, but that LMW heparin is less effective than conventional heparin in preventing rapid uptake and degradation of LPL by the liver. After injection of heparin the metabolism of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins is initially accelerated, presumably as a result of the high levels of circulating LPL. Then follows a phase when lipoprotein metabolism is slower than normal, perhaps because endothelial LPL has been depleted by accelerated transport to and degradation in the liver.
