  • “Who Killed Swedish Teacher Education?” : Historicizing current debates on teaching and teaching methods in Sweden
  • 2025
  • Ingår i: Teacher Education and Its Discontents. - : Taylor & Francis. ; , s. 26-45
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter examines the historical context and evolution of teaching methods in Swedish teacher education. In doing so, it historicizes the ongoing debates about the quality of teacher education in Sweden and the perceived lack of instruction in teaching methods. Drawing on analysis of guidelines, government reports, recommendations, and curricula spanning from 1842 to the early 21st century, the chapter highlights changes in political reasoning about teaching, learning, and the organization of teacher education. The analysis reveals that teaching has been conceptualized in various ways throughout history. Early approaches viewed teaching as a technique for organizing and monitoring student progress. Later, teaching came to be seen as an art requiring not only good knowledge of the subject matter but also creativity and talent. With the subsequent "scientifi?ation" of teacher training and its gradual incorporation into higher education in the late 1960s, the course on teaching methodology came to be perceived as normative, emphasizing reproducible skills and best practices. As a result, by the end of the 20th century, it was replaced by the course in Didaktik, which, instead of providing teacher students with ready-made methods, focuses on critical evaluation of teaching based on relevant research. This does not mean that the question of teaching methods has disappeared from Swedish teacher education programs. However, in the highly differentiated educational system, it is handled differently by different institutions.

  • Advances in Structural Integrity and Failure
  • 2024
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this book is to expand the knowledge and skills of civil and structural engineers and researchers and help them better understand, design, and analyze civil engineering applications. This book examines advancements in structural integrity and failure and underground construction. It offers profound insights into the mechanisms that can lead to the integrity or failure of structures and result in safe underground construction. It provides details on the fundamental principles, theories, behavior, and performance of different structural elements and underground construction. The book delves into the mechanics, design, and construction of reinforced concrete structures. It explores the design principles applied to reinforced concrete structures and considers critical structural elements like beams, slabs, columns, and foundations. It also demonstrates various advances in reinforced concrete technology, including high-performance concrete, fiber-reinforced concrete, self-compacting concrete, and the use of nanomaterials. It describes methods for the analysis and evaluation of reinforced concrete structures, non-destructive testing methods, structural health monitoring, finite element analysis, and causes of failure. In addition, the book proposes a design model for determining the flexural bearing capacity of reinforced concrete beams having reinforcement steel with reduced modulus of elasticity. Moreover, the book investigates the effects of loading rates on the mechanical properties of structural steel. It also evaluates the formation of welding defects in the process of connecting steel structures, which is inevitable, from the aspect of failure mechanics. In addition, it utilizes an equivalent shell-wire model to propose a simple accurate technique for nonlinear assessment of reinforced concrete shear walls with less computational cost. The book introduces tunnel design theory and method, support structure systems, construction technology, and equipment under complex geological conditions. Furthermore, it highlights procedures to design efficient dewatering systems considering the working conditions, stability, and impacts generated in the vicinity of construction, and to examine the state of retaining walls by using hydrogeological tools. Finally, it outlines the online monitoring and intelligent diagnosis mechanism of key equipment in the subway ventilation system.

  • The role of gained trust: effects on intrinsic motivation, person-job fit and turnover intentions among real estate brokers
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Property Management. - : Emerald. - 0263-7472 .- 1758-731X.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to analyze if gained trust is intrinsically motivating and whether it is correlated to subjective person-job fit and occupational turnover intentions among Swedish real estate brokers. Design/methodology/approach: The empirical data was gathered via a survey targeting all real estate brokers in Sweden and analyzed using structural equation modeling. Findings: The results indicated that brokers are motivated by gained trust from their sellers and that gained trust is a vital part of person-job fit among brokers. In addition, the results show that higher levels of person-job fit reduce the occupational turnover intentions among brokers. Research limitations/implications: Being a real estate broker in Sweden might differ from being a broker in many other otherwise comparable countries. Another limitation is the lack of measurements of job satisfaction and/or intrinsic motivation connected to other job characteristics besides customer relations and gained trust. The high mean values of person-job fit, and intrinsic motivation connected to gained trust from customers are contributing to a more nuanced description of brokerage. Practical implications: This study gives insights about intrinsic motivation and its connection to person-job fit. Awareness of what drives brokes can be used by both workers and managers to reduce occupational turnover. Originality/value: This study is interesting from a person-job fit theory advancement perspective since the focus is given to the connection between specific situational work characteristics and person-job fit.

  • Managers in the context of small business growth: a qualitative study of working conditions and wellbeing
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: BMC Public Health. - : Springer. - 1471-2458. ; 24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeIn view of the importance of managers’ wellbeing for their leadership behaviour, employee health, and business effectiveness and survival, a better understanding of managers’ wellbeing and working conditions is important for creating healthy and sustainable businesses. Previous research has mostly provided a static picture of managers’ wellbeing and work in the context of small businesses, missing the variability and dynamism that is characteristic of this context. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore how managers in small companies perceive their working conditions and wellbeing in the context of business growth.MethodsThe study is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews with 20 managers from twelve small companies. Content and thematic analysis were applied.ResultsThe findings indicate that a manager’s working environment evolves from its initial stages and through the company’s growth, leading to variations over time in the manager’s experiences of wellbeing and work–life balance as well as changes in job demands and resources. Managers’ working situation becomes less demanding and more manageable when workloads and working hours are reduced and a better work–life balance is achieved. The perceived improvement is related to changes in organizational factors (e.g. company resources), but also to individual factors (e.g. managers’ increased awareness of the importance of a sustainable work situation). However, there were differences in how the working conditions and wellbeing changed over time and how organizational and individual resources affected the studied managers’ wellbeing.ConclusionsThis study shows that, in the context of small business, managers’ working conditions and wellbeing are dynamic and are linked to growth-related changes that occur from the start of organizational activities and during periods of growth. In addition, the findings suggest that changes in managers’ working conditions and wellbeing follow different trajectories over time because of the interaction between organizational and personal factors.

  • Managers’ Work, Working Conditions and Wellbeing in Small Companies with Profitable Growth
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background Managers’ work, working conditions and wellbeing are important determinants of occupational health in organizations. Nevertheless, little research has investigated these factors in the context of small growing businesses, which are known to contribute to employment, economic growth and social stability. The aim of this thesis was to explore managers’ work, working conditions and wellbeing in the context of small businesses with profitable growth. Methods Study I used a cross-sectional design to assess patterns in managerial work activities and leadership behaviours. Studies II–IV used qualitative interviews with managers (II–IV) and employees (II) to explore the effects of managers’ wellbeing on their leadership (II), their working conditions (III), and changes in their working conditions and wellbeing in the context of growing small businesses (IV).Results Managers worked long hours, posing risks for occupational health, but also adopted work practices that bolster occupational health. Firm size matters for managerial work. Managers’ wellbeing reflected in their mood and energy levels and influenced their leadership behaviours and performance, and the company’s work environment. Managers were more constructive when they felt well, and more passively destructive when they felt unwell. Certain factors mitigated the consequences of their negative behaviours in the organization. Five types of managers’ demands and resources (daily managerial work; achievement of results; and social; organizational; and individual factors) were identified, where the specificity of the small business context revealed unique characteristics. Company growth changed managers’ experiences of working conditions and wellbeing. Conclusions The specific context of small growing businesses shaped managers’ work, working conditions and wellbeing and the interplay between them. Dynamism in the organizational context due to growth had implications for managers’ work, working conditions and wellbeing.

  • Religion, culture, and cancer : insights from a qualitative study on coping experiences of Filipino patients
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Psychology. - : Frontiers. - 1664-1078. ; 15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Meaning-making coping is used by people with cancer to help them deal with the stress and emotional turmoil associated with their diagnosis. It is a multifaceted approach that can be influenced by cultural, existential, and personal factors. Research on meaning-making coping among Filipinos diagnosed with cancer is sparse. This study examines how a sample of Filipino people with cancer cope with their illnesses. Methods: We employed a qualitative approach. The study involved 20 participants with various types of cancer in the Philippines who were selected through purposive sampling and agreed to be interviewed. Results: The thematic analysis of the interviews revealed the application of both religious and secular meaning-making coping by participants. The study also confirmed the potential influence of culture on coping strategies.Discussion: The results indicate that religion plays a significant role in Filipino coping mechanisms, given that the Philippines is predominantly a Christian nation. Additionally, the findings highlight the importance of close family ties in Filipino culture and how it contributes to coping with cancer.

  • Development of an AI Model Utilizing Buildings' Thermal Mass to Optimize Heating Energy and Indoor Temperature in a Historical Building Located in a Cold Climate
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Buildings. - : MDPI AG. - 2075-5309. ; 14:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Historical buildings account for a significant portion of the energy use of today's building stock, and there are usually limited energy saving measures that can be applied due to antiquarian and esthetic restrictions. The purpose of this case study is to evaluate the use of the building structure of a historical stone building as a heating battery, i.e., to periodically store thermal energy in the building's structures without physically changing them. The stored heat is later utilized at times of, e.g., high heat demand, to reduce peaking as well as overall heat supply. With the help of Artificial Intelligence and Convolutional Neural Network Deep Learning Modelling, heat supply to the building is controlled by weather forecasting and a binary calendarization of occupancy for the optimization of energy use and power demand under sustained comfortable indoor temperatures. The study performed indicates substantial savings in total (by approximately 30%) and in peaking energy (by approximately 20% based on daily peak powers) in the studied building and suggests that the method can be applied to other, similar cases.

  • Optimizing Reverse Osmosis Feed Spacer Design for Enhanced Dimethylphenol Removal from Wastewater: A Study of Hydrodynamics and Performance Indicators
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Water. - : MDPI. - 2073-4441. ; 16:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Due to its high pollutant rejection and low energy usage, the spiral wound module of reverse osmosis (RO) process is the most commonly used technology utilised in wastewater treatment. For a spiral wound module, the presence of a feed spacer is important as a key solution to mitigate the concentration polarisation phenomenon, due to disorderly fluid flow, and to improve the mass transfer coefficient. Undoubtedly, improvements in the spiral wound module design, mainly in the symmetrical shape of the feed spacer, can have a significant impact on the cost and probable use of these modules. Despite the wide interest in appraising the impact of feed spacer geometry and orientation on the performance of a spiral wound module for RO process-based water desalination, the hydrodynamics of feed spacers (pressure drop and mass transfer coefficient) and the associated influences of feed spacer design (the height of the feed spacer, the angle of the filaments, and the porosity) on the removal of pollutants from wastewater have not yet been addressed. The current investigation aims to fill this gap by studying the hydrodynamics and design parameters of the selected parallelogram feed spacer type ultrafiltration (UF−3) for the removal of dimethylphenol from wastewater. Using model-based simulation, the impacts of UF−3 feed spacer design parameters, including the height, angle between the filaments (orientation), and porosity on the pressure drop, friction factor, axial flow fluid velocity, mass transfer coefficient, water flux, dimethylphenol rejection, recovery rate, and specific energy consumption are detailed in this study. The study intends to demonstrate the optimum design features of UF−3 feed spacer that should be considered to assure the highest elimination of dimethylphenol from wastewater in addition to the lowest specific energy consumption.

  • Seven years of experimental warming and nutrient addition causes decline of bryophytes and lichens in alpine meadow and heath communities
  • 2024
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Global change is predicted to have large and rapid impact on polar and alpine regions. Bryophytes and lichens increase their importance in terms of biomass, carbon/nutrient cycling, cover and ecosystem functioning at higher latitudes/altitudes. Here we report from a seven year factorial experiment with nutrient addition and warming on the abundance of bryophytes and lichens in an alpine meadow and heath community. Treatments had significant negative effect on relative change of total abundance bryophytes and lichens, the largest decline to the nutrient addition and the combined nutrient addition and warming treatments, bryophytes decreasing most in the meadow, lichens most in the heath. Nutrient addition, and the combined nutrient addition and warming brought rapid decrease in both bryophytes and lichens, while warming had a delayed negative impact. Of sixteen species that were included the statistical analyses, we found significant negative effects on seven species. We show that impact of simulated global change on bryophytes and lichens differ in in time and magnitude among treatments and plant communities. Our results underscore the importance of longer-term studies to improve the quality of climate change models, as short-term studies are poor predictors of longer-term responses of bryophytes and lichens, similar to what have been shown for vascular plants. Species-specific responses may differ in time, and this will likely cause changes in the dominance structures of bryophytes and lichens over time.
