  • Spatio-temporal registration of 3D microscopy image sequences of arabidopsis floral meristems
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Biomedical Imaging, IEEE International Symposium on. - 9781479923519 - 9781479923496
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The shoot apical meristem (SAM) is at the origin of all the plant above-ground organs (including stems, leaves and flowers) and is a biological object of interest for the understanding of plant morphogenesis. The quantification of tissue growth at a cellular level requires the analysis of 3D microscopic image sequences of developing meristems. To address inter-individual variability, it is also required to compare individuals. This obviously implies the ability to process inter-individual registration, i.e. to compute spatial and temporal correspondences between sequences from different meristems. In the present work, we propose a spatial registration method dedicated to microscopy floral meristem (FM) images, and the identification, for a given still image of a meristem, of its best corresponding time-point in a sequence of an other individual (temporal registration).

  • Civilrätten som kraftkälla för hållbar utveckling
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Advokaten. Tidskrift för Sveriges advokatsamfund. - 0281-3505. ; , s. 46-50

  • Empowerment and Private Law : Civil Impetus for Sustainable Development
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation is the result of a study of private law viewed as a source of power for individuals to enhance values they favour. As an appropriate example of such values, the study has focused on current norms that have been recognized and mirrored as sustainable development goals (SDGs) in the UN Agenda 2030. The research question asks why and under which conditions it is possible for individuals to utilize civil rights and private law to empower themselves and others, with the purpose of promoting societal change in line with norms for sustainable development and resilience (SDR norms). The research has been conducted as a multiple-case study and the overall phenomenon of focus for the investigation is the function of private law and civil rights in reflexive processes that occur in the interface between individuals and norms guiding the individuals´ actions. Eight cases have been subject to in-depth studies, analyses, comparisons and syntheses. The cases deal with a variety of subjects within the research theme: buried toxicant waste barrels, cause lawyering for the conservation of marine resources, damage from oil pollution, corporate water supply pro bono, sustainability in the food industry, organic agriculture, urban gardening and sustainability in banking and finances. Three of those cases are characterized by an element of confrontation in court procedures, and five of them by the search for progress by consensus. The study confirms that contemporary conditions in society enable human individuals to promote the targeted kind of societal change by adopting techniques of legal empowerment. A sizable portion of such conditions exists within the body of operative components in private law for utilization by confrontation or consensus. Legal court procedures, legal out-of-court procedures and legal acts to regenerate or accumulate power are constantly available as operative instruments with potential functions that underpin an integration of common values in society. A prerequisite for this kind of promotion of societal change to occur, however, is that individuals do not hesitate to activate the available body of law in interaction with other norms than legal norms. Such intentional activation of law is crucial, not only in advanced legal procedures such as litigation, transaction, authorization or legal entity foundation, but also in everyday legal acts related to purchases, services, loans, contracts and collaboration. The summarized findings of the study clarify that the power and the certainty of civil rights and private law, when operationalized by assiduous individuals, can be conducive to the realization of SDR norms.

  • The Power of Norms : A Case Study in Search of a Fossile Free Society
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Festskrift till Håkan Hydén. - 9789154405756 ; , s. 411-421
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In his excellent book Normvetenskap (Norm Science), has initiated an interesting discussion on strategic normative thinking (SNT). This article presents a case study trying to verify, falsify or, if possible, shed light upon aspects upon SNT. The unit of analysis for the study is the concept of norms and the operational set of measures relates to research on norms. The analysis of the case show´s how Hydén´s norm model can be used as an instrument to discover and sort information on norms as power sources and power-plocks in governance of human actions and decisisons. Reduction of exxects from power-blocks existing in the current composition of the normative landscape requires knowledge on crucial components of cognition, volition and system conditions in the evolution of norms in society. An analysis of the normative landscape by help from those factors helps understanding where the heaviest power-blocks are located and how their effects can be reduced.

  • Ruin probabilities and first passage times for self-similar processes.
  • 1998
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis investigates ruin probabilities and first passage times for self-similar processes. We propose self-similar processes as a risk model with claims appearing in good and bad periods. Then, in particular, we get the fractional Brownian motion with drift as a limit risk process. Some bounds and asymptotics for ruin probability on a finite interval for fractional Brownian motion are derived. A method of simulation of ruin probability over infinite horizon for fractional Brownian motion is presented. The moments of the first passage time of fractional Brownian motion are studied. As an application of our method we numerically compute the Picands constant for fractional Brownian motion. An asymptotic behavior of the supremum of a Gaussian process X over infinite horizon is studied. In particular X can be fractional Brownian motion, a nonlinearly scaled Brownian motion or integrated stationary Gaussian processes. The thesis treats first passage times and the expected number of crossings for symmetric stable processes. We derive Rice's formula for a class of stable processes and give a numerical approximation of the expected number of crossings based on Rice's formula. We study weak convergence of a sequence of renewal processes constructed by a sequence of random variables belonging to the domain of attraction of a stable law. We show that this sequence is not tight in the Skorokhod topology but the weak convergence of some functionals is derived. A weaker notion of the weak convergence is proposed.

  • Microscale Acoustofluidics
  • 2015
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The manipulation of cells and microparticles within microfluidic systems using external forces is valuable for many microscale analytical and bioanalytical applications. Acoustofluidics is the ultrasound-based external forcing of microparticles with microfluidic systems. It has gained much interest because it allows for the simple label-free separation of microparticles based on their mechanical properties without affecting the microparticles themselves. Microscale Acoustofluidics provides an introduction to the field providing the background to the fundamental physics including chapters on governing equations in microfluidics and perturbation theory and ultrasound resonances, acoustic radiation force on small particles, continuum mechanics for ultrasonic particle manipulation, and piezoelectricity and application to the excitation of acoustic fields for ultrasonic particle manipulation. The book also provides information on the design and characterization of ultrasonic particle manipulation devices as well as applications in acoustic trapping and immunoassays. Written by leading experts in the field, the book will appeal to postgraduate students and researchers interested in microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip applications.

  • Drug-related problems in the elderly - Interventions to improve the quality of pharmacotherapy
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Introduction: Elderly people, in particular those residing in nursing homes, often use many drugs. In general elderly patients are at greater risk of experiencing drug-related problems (DRP), as they have multiple diseases, are using many drugs and have changed physiological status. Objectives: To describe the frequency of potential drug-related problems in the elderly and to evaluate different kinds of interventions that are meant to reduce the number of potential drug-related problems in the elderly. Methods: (Paper I) All information on medication use in nursing home patients with epilepsy or Parkinson's disease was collected. A multi-speciality team evaluated nursing home patients' medication and, when appropriate, suggested changes. (Paper II) Elderly patients that had been discharged from hospital were identified. All information on their medications prior to, during and after hospital care was collected. Medication errors during transfer between care levels were identified. (Paper III) Educational outreach visits were offered General Practitioner (GP) practices. Data on prescribing of benzodiazepines and anti-psychotic drugs to elderly before and after this education was compared with a control group of GP practices. (Paper IV) Implementation of a medication report when elderly patients are discharged from hospital care. Results: Inappropriate medications are common in nursing homes. Medication errors are frequent when elderly patients are transferred between hospital and primary care (Papers II and IV). Advice from a multi-speciality team did not have any positive effects on the quality of life in nursing home patients (Paper I). Educational outreach visits are well appreciated by GPs and can affect their prescribing habits leading to a decrease in prescribing of inappropriate medications to elderly patients (Paper III). Medication Report is effective in reducing the number of medication errors when elderly patients are transferred from hospital to primary care (Paper IV). Conclusions: The research comprising this thesis has demonstrated a need for attention towards drug-related problems in the elderly. Educational outreach visits are effective in affecting GPs prescribing habits. Medication report is a simple but very effective instrument to decrease the number of medication errors when elderly patients are discharged from hospital.

    • Visualizing geographical phenomena often involve communication of information and relationships through a map in either 2D or 3D. In many cases, the information conveyed through the map is a simplified and symbolic depiction of phenomena that is visible in our physical environment. However, maps are also effective for the communication of geographical phenomena that are hidden or are by nature “invisible” for the human eye. As well as invisible factors in our present environment, tracks of occurrences and events from the past have often been lost for many years. In the same way, future situations have still not materialized. This issue covers all these situations. From historical landscapes and events in the past, cadastre and underground geology today and urban planning for the future. The use of traditional cartographic techniques as well as virtual reality are discussed. Several of the research projects involve user studies. The main objectives contributing papers are to make the “invisible” information accessible and more understandable for humans.
