  • Human risk assessment of single exposure in chemical incidents : present situation and new and increasing chemical incident scenarios
  • 2011
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The release of chemicals from their containment, either accidentally or deliberately, is one of the most relevant risk scenarios in Europe. A human health risk assessment is a prerequisite for chemical incident prevention, preparedness and response. European guidance and harmonized Acute Exposure Reference Values (AERVs) are urgently needed for effective human health risk assessment in the context of chemical incidents. At present, no broad European consensus is available on guidance for risk assessment, risk management and risk communication purposes in case of chemical incidents. A review of legislation, existing or currently under revision, suggests that harmonized European guidance is not expected to be developed in the short term. An increasing number of European countries are developing their own procedures to assess the human health risk of chemical incident scenarios. The AERVs thus produced serve different purposes and are not interchangeable. Lack of international harmonization seriously obstructs a consistent response in chemical emergencies with transboundary effects within and beyond the EU, will hamper multinational companies attempting to make consistent risk assessments worldwide and will hinder consistent and transparent assessment, and management and communication of risks by different stakeholders.Emerging chemical incident risk scenarios and risk drivers have been identified. It is recommended to monitor more frequently at an early stage for new trends in chemicals, scenarios and risks from chemical incidents. A need for a specific approach to deal with single exposure to mixtures of chemicals is identified, as well as for specific guidance to adequately protect professional first responders.

  • CO(2)QUEST : Techno-economic assessment of CO2 quality effect on its storage and transport
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 12TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON GREENHOUSE GAS CONTROL TECHNOLOGIES, GHGT-12. - : Elsevier BV. ; , s. 2622-2629
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Presented is an overview of the CO(2)QUEST project that addresses fundamentally important issues regarding the impact of typical impurities in the gas or dense phase CO2 stream captured from fossil fuel power plants on its safe and economic transportation and storage. Previous studies have mainly investigated the impact of CO2 stream impurities on each part of the carbon capture and storage (CCS) chain in isolation. This is a significant drawback given the different sensitivities of pipeline, wellbore materials and storage sites to the various impurities. The project brings together leading researchers and stakeholders, to address the impact of the typical impurities upon safe and economic CO2 transportation and storage. State-of-the-art mathematical models, backed by laboratory and industrial-scale experimentation, are implemented to perform a comprehensive techno-economic assessment of the impact of impurities upon the thermo-physical phenomena governing pipeline and storage-site integrities.

  • Strong pH influence on N2O and CH4 fluxes from forested organic soils
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Soil Science. - : Wiley. - 1351-0754 .- 1365-2389. ; 60, s. 311-320
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from farmed organic soils can have a major impact on national emission budgets. This investigation was conducted to evaluate whether afforestation of such soils could mitigate this problem. Over the period 1994-1997, emissions of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) were recorded from an organic soil site in Sweden, forested with silver birch (Betula pendula Roth), using static field chambers. The site was used for grazing prior to forestation. Soil pH and soil carbon content varied greatly across the site. The soil pH ranged from 3.6 to 5.9 and soil carbon from 34 to 42%.The mean annual N2O emission was 19.4 (+/- 6.7) kg N2O-N ha(-1) and was strongly correlated with soil pH (r = -0.93, P < 0.01) and soil carbon content (r = 0.97, P < 0.001). The N2O emissions showed large spatial and temporal variability with greatest emissions during the summer periods. The site was a sink for CH4 (i.e. -0.8 (+/- 0.5) kg CH4 ha(-1) year(-1)) and the flux correlated well with the C/N ratio (r = 0.93, P < 0.01), N2O emission (r = 0.92, P < 0.01), soil pH (r = -0.95, P < 0.01) and soil carbon (r = 0.97, P < 0.001). CH4 flux followed a seasonal pattern, with uptake dominating during the summer, and emission during winter. This study indicates that, because of the large N2O emissions, afforestation may not mitigate the GHG emissions from fertile peat soils with acidic pH, although it can reduce the net GHG because of greater CO2 assimilation by the trees compared with agricultural crops.

  • Industry Dynamics and Relatedness of Knowledge: Knowledge Transfer Through Labor Mobility and Entrepreneurship in the West Swedish Textile Industry
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This PhD thesis investigates how industry dynamics are influenced by knowledge transferred through labor mobility and entrepreneurship by focusing on the role of relatedness of the knowledge. The empirical setting is the textile industry in the West Swedish region Västra Götaland, which encompasses the sub-industries Manufacturing of textiles and Wholesale and retail trade of textiles. For the purpose of the thesis, quantitative methods are applied, where linked employee–employer data in Sweden are used for the period 1990–2014. The thesis finds that co-location alone does not explain the patterns of knowledge transfer through labor mobility in the textile industry—instead, the relatedness of knowledge (reflecting cognitive proximity) is also influential. The influence of relatedness of knowledge is also shown for the productivity of the knowledge that is sourced as well as for entrepreneurial performance. To study productive knowledge sourcing, the influence of the workers’ industry experience is investigated, whereas to study entrepreneurial performance, the way the entrepreneur’s industry experience influences the survival chances of the venture is investigated. Both studies find that the role of relatedness of the knowledge, as indicated by individuals’ industry experience, differs between Manufacturing of textiles and Wholesale and retail trade of textiles. Knowledge from related industries is comparatively more important in the former than in the latter, whereas knowledge that originates from the same sub-industry is especially beneficial in the latter. An important additional aspect is that the relative usefulness of knowledge from related industries differs somewhat between the studies. The analysis discusses these observed differences between Manufacturing of textiles and Wholesale and retail trade of textiles by relating them to different knowledge requirements that are likely to be prevalent in the different industry life-cycle phases the two sub- industries of the textile industry were subject to. The thesis proposes that future research should take industry life-cycle phases into account as well as distinguish between different sources of knowledge, firms, and outcomes when investigating the role of relatedness of knowledge for development of firms, industries, and the economy at large.

  • A method for in-situ electrical measurements of thin film heterostructures using TEM and SEM
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: EMC 2008 14th European Microscopy Congress 1–5 September 2008, Aachen, Germany 2008. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer. - 9783540852254 - 9783540852261 ; , s. 297-298
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A method for in-situ measurements of electrical properties of thin film heterostructures using TEM and SEM has been developed. This method allows measurements of the conductance in a thin film heterostructure in a direction along the film planes in thin TEM foils. The advantage is that the properties can be directly correlated to the local atomic structure. The specimens are cross section TEM samples prepared with standard grinding, polishing and ion beam milling techniques

  • Wage Adjustment and Productivity Shocks
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Economic Journal. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0013-0133 .- 1468-0297. ; 126:595, s. 1739-1773
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study how workers’ wages respond to changes in firm-level physical productivity using Swedish data. We find that technology shocks affect workers’ wages through both internal and external forces. Wages respond three times as much to physical productivity shocks that are shared with outside firms within the same sector as they do to firm-level physical productivity shocks. The larger impact of sectoral physical productivity is related to the degree of within-sector labour mobility, suggesting that the productivity evolution among firms that draw their labour from the same market segment is a crucial determinant of the wage growth of incumbent workers.
