  • Can public policy regenerate a traditional industry through collaborative research? The case of the Swedish food industry
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: DRUID Society conference 2014, CBS, Copenhagen, June 16-18. ; 2014:1872
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies the regeneration of a traditional industry through the intersection of business innovation, public policy and the development of capabilities in firms. Our theoretical contribution is to propose that and conceptualize how public policy can indirectly boost the competitive advantage of a traditional industry by stimulating the development of firm capabilities to innovate through supporting collaborative research between universities and industry. To illustrate this proposition, we present an exploratory case study of a specific public policy initiative for collaborative research and structural change in the food industry in Sweden, from the mid-1990s to mid-2000s. The findings from this case study suggest that such public policy initiatives over time can and do develop firm capabilities to innovate in a traditional industry such as the food industry.

  • Collaboration strategies in university-industry relationships
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: AEGIS Final conference: Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the Knowledge Based Economy, September 5-7, Milan.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We provide a descriptive case study of firms’ collaboration strategies in two university-industry research centers. The reported case suggests that (large) firms are primarily interested in gaining fundamental understanding and access to networks rather than developing directly applicable innovations and applied research when interacting. Moreover, KIE ventures interact and collaborate with universities and academics to some extent for different reasons than large established firms, primarily due to their limited resources and low visibility in terms of recruitments.

  • Collaborative Strategies: How and Why Academic Spin-offs Interact with Engineering University Centers
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: How Entrepreneurs Do What they Do: Case Study of Knowledge Intensive Entrepreneurship / McKelvey, M. and A.H. Lassen (eds.). - Cheltenham, U.K. : Edward Elgar Publishers. - 9781781005491 ; , s. 34-47
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter follows the management and development of two KIE ventures that are academic spin-offs, in relation to collaborative strategies. The perspective is on how and why academic spin-offs continue to engage in collaborative strategies with engineering centers located at the university. The KIE ventures use the centers to access scientific and technological knowledge, as expected, but they also are interested in accessing other resources and networks to help further develop their research, product and market development. The key message is that networks with research centers at the university help shape the venture. Even after the founding phase, these KIE ventures can use collaborative strategies for research to access resources and ideas – involving scientific and technological knowledge but also market and business knowledge. The results of the chapter help us understand in particular how the venture needs to continue to access resources and ideas, even during the management and development phase of the KIE conceptual model. The KIE ventures are academic spin-offs, heavily involved in the development of technologies, and yet they greatly benefit from these university networks to access market knowledge from other, established firms, and to access business knowledge through the recruitment of experienced managers.

  • Conceptualizing Knowledge Intensive Entrepreneurship: Concepts and Models.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Aegis conference - 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines knowledge intensive entrepreneurship in various ways and represents a broad framework within which the AEGIS project will take place. Knowledgeintensive entrepreneurship is considered a key socio-economic phenomenon that drives innovation, and economic growth, and is at the base of the competitiveness of countries. After an initial definition of knowledge intensive entrepreneurship and the main concepts, in Section 1 we will present the proposed conceptual framework that will guide our research. Then in Section 2 we will concentrate on what the literature has said about entrepreneurship: we will divide the brief survey into economics (section 2.1), industrial dynamics (section 2.2) and innovation management (section 2.3). We will then turn into what has already been researched about knowledge intensive entrepreneurship by examining KEINS, an EU exploratory project carried out in the last years (section 3). Following a presentation of the main results from KEINS, we will introduce the main points of AEGIS, centered on linking firms, knowledge and systems (section 4). Finally, in the last section, we will focus on analyzing the phenomenon of KIE. This includes first an examination of the various empirical dimensions of AEGIS in its attempts to develop indicators to explore, identify and measure knowledge intensive entrepreneurship. We then conclude with some final considerations
