  • Customer and supplier collaboration in green product innovation: external and internal capabilities
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Business Strategy and the Environment. - : Wiley. - 1099-0836 .- 0964-4733. ; 27:6, s. 677-693
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Firms collaborate in green product innovation (GPI) to develop products with less environmental impact. These products typically use less energy, have lower emissions and incorporate more environmentally friendly materials. In an industrial setting, firms often collaborate along the supply chain with customers and suppliers. This paper focuses on external and internal capabilities that firms need when collaborating in GPI. The paper builds on data from five large industrial firms in ten case studies, in which these firms collaborate with customers and suppliers to innovate green products to an industrial market. External and internal capabilities are investigated. The study points to the importance of finding a suitable partner. Partners need to have environmental expertise and contribute knowledge or technology that is new to the firm. Firms need to combine relational capabilities, such as trust, with contractual agreements in collaborative innovations. The findings point to the importance of knowledge management with the partner as well as internally in the firm. The study shows that no partner collaboration operates in isolation but is situated in a network context.

  • Tactical capabilities in agile NPD projects: insights from an autonomous car project in Sweden
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Innovation and Research. - : Inderscience Publishers. - 1751-0260 .- 1751-0252. ; 33:2, s. 236-251
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research on project management and new product development (NPD) identifies both strategy and tactics as important for success. Whilst there is a lot of attention on strategy, few studies address the role of tactics in NPD projects. In the pursuit for increasing organisational abilities to manage uncertainty, agile is increasingly getting traction in large firms. Both tactical activities and agile methodology deal with adapting to emergent challenges and handling uncertainty in projects. This motivated this study of how an agile transformation initiative influences tactical activities within NPD projects. The paper is based on a longitudinal case study of Volvo Car Group’s autonomous car project. The case firm’s transformation from waterfall to agile method provided the possibility to understand how tactical activities differ between the two methods. By using observations from the case, we argue that agile development method facilitates the use of tactics in NPD projects.

  • Understanding Management Ideas: The Development of Interpretability
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the face of an ever-changing, complex environment, managers in organizations need constantly to develop ideas on how to maintain competitiveness. One way to address this challenge comes in the form of ideas about how to manage – or management ideas (MIs). These may be developed by managers or consultants, and often are publicized through the business and popular press. Some MIs have achieved widespread temporary popularity and adoption, spanning industries and continents. As a result, MIs have been compared to e.g. fashions or even viruses. However, unlike fashions, MIs' popularity is not due to their specific looks or colors but due to their interpretability, i.e., whether or not they allow managers from various backgrounds to interpret their goals and means as in line with those of the MI. While beneficial to inter and intra- organizational spread, interpretability presents managers in charge of widespread intra- organizational adoption with a paradox. On the one side, interpretability supports widespread adoption, on the other, it allows individual interpretation, and thus non-unified adaptation. This can be seen as challenging to the involved managers, and also the ratings agencies, and the official institutions that want to foster and assess the widespread adaptation of MIs.This thesis investigates the development of interpretability by focusing on a contemporary management idea - design thinking. Design thinking advocates an approach to user-centered innovation based on the ways designers work. Investigating the development of different textual elements that comprise design thinking, in the literature as well as in large organizations, this thesis contributes to our understanding of how interpretability develops, and theoretically resolves the paradox of interpretability.

  • Symmetric Assumptions in the Theory of Disruptive Innovation - Theoretical and Managerial Implications
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Creativity and Innovation Management. - : Wiley. - 0963-1690 .- 1467-8691. ; 23:4, s. 472-483
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The literature on disruptive innovation has convincingly explained why many established firms encounter problems under conditions of discontinuous change; incumbents fail to invest in new technologies that are not demanded by their existing customers. This argument is grounded in resource dependency theory and the associated assumption that existing customers control a firm’s internal resource allocation processes. While convincingly explaining the problem of disruptive innovation, there is still much to do in terms of developing managerial solutions. We argue that a key reason why such solutions are lacking can be found in the asymmetric theoretical assumptions underpinning the original theory of disruptive innovation; assumptions which constrain on the scope of potential solutions. Specifically, we identify two related forms of asymmetry in the theory of disruptive innovation. First, the focal (incumbent) firm is treated as a collection of heterogeneous actors with different preferences, incentives and competencies, whereas firms in the surrounding environment are treated as if they contained no such heterogeneity. Second, the focal (incumbent) firm is treated as if controlled by the firms in its environment, whereas the focal firm itself is incapable of exerting any such control. In this paper we argue that a more symmetric theory of disruptive innovation - i.e. one that treats all similar entities in the same way - opens up for a range of interesting and fruitful managerial solutions.

  • The non-disruptive emergence of an ecosystem for 3D Printing - Insights from the hearing aid industry's transition 1989-2008
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Technological forecasting & social change. - : Elsevier. - 0040-1625 .- 1873-5509. ; 102, s. 160-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 3D Printing technologies have received extensive attention in recent years, but empirical investigations of how this technology is used for manufacturing are still sparse. More knowledge is also needed regarding how 3D Printing affects the competitive dynamics between firms. This article explores how 3D Printing has been adopted for manufacturing and discusses under what conditions it might influence competition in different industries. Drawing upon data from the global hearing aid industry's adoption of 3D Printing during the period 1989-2008, this paper describes some of the benefits of using the technology, while also pointing out challenges firms encounter in making this transition. The study shows that early adopters were exposed to more technological uncertainty related to choosing printers. All firms encountered operational challenges as 3D Printing required new skill sets, but the technology had little impact on the competitive dynamics of this industry. Drawing upon literature on technological discontinuities, platforms and ecosystems, the paper illustrates and explains why the technology was not disruptive and also discusses how these findings apply to other industrieswhere 3D Printing is currently gaining momentum.

    • The average lifespan of a multinational company is about half that of a natural person. While human life expectancy is growing, however, owing to improved healthcare and better living conditions, the lifespan of companies is getting shorter. This does not have to be the case.
