  • School nurses' view of schoochildren's health and their attitudes to document it in the school health record : a pilot study
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 17:4, s. 392-398
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study highlights school nurses' view of schoolchildren's health and their attitude to document it in the school health records. A strategic sample of 12 school nurses was interviewed. The interviews were semistructured and analysed with qualitative content analysis. The findings showed that the school nurses' viewed schoolchildren as physical healthy although they called attention to growing problems related to a changed lifestyle. Psychosocial ill-health was however increasing and the most common reason for visiting the school nurse was psychosomatic expressions. According to the nurses' descriptions, health was related to the individual, the school and the family situation. The family situation was mentioned as one of the most important factors of schoolchildren's health. The nurses described no problem to document schoolchildren's physical health. Ethical consideration, tradition, lack of time and the structure of the record were however factors that were said to hinder the documentation of the psychosocial health. In order to promote, protect and recover schoolchildren's health, more research is needed about how beliefs, experience, ethical consideration and resources influence the school nurse's daily work with schoolchildren's health.

  • Periapical status of non-root-filled teeth with resin composite, amalgam, or full crown restorations : a cross-sectional study of a Swedish adult population
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Endodontics. - : Elsevier. - 0099-2399 .- 1878-3554. ; 40:9, s. 1303-1308
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • INTRODUCTION: Experimental studies show that dental pulp cells respond unfavorably to contact with resin composite restorative material. Hypothetically, in a random population, the frequency of apical periodontitis should be higher for teeth restored with resin composite than with amalgam. Therefore, the aim was to compare the periapical status of non-root-filled teeth restored with resin composite, amalgam, or laboratory-fabricated crowns in an adult Swedish population. METHODS: The subjects comprised 440 individuals from a randomly selected sample of 1,000 adult residents of a Swedish county. The type, material, and quality of the restorations were recorded for all non-root-filled teeth by clinical examination and intraoral clinical photographs. Periapical status was evaluated on panoramic radiographs. The association between periapical status and type, material, and quality of the restorations was analyzed using the chi-square test and logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the frequency of apical periodontitis (AP) between teeth restored with resin composite or amalgam (1.3% and 1.1%, respectively). The frequency of AP for teeth restored with laboratory-fabricated crowns was significantly higher (6.3%). Regression analysis showed no association between AP and resin composite restorations but a significant association with laboratory-fabricated crowns. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that the risk of damage to the pulp-dentin complex from exposure to resin composite material and dentin bonding agents shown in experimental studies is not reflected in the clinical setting. However, in the study sample, AP was diagnosed in a significantly higher proportion of teeth restored with laboratory-fabricated crowns.

METHODS: The subjects consisted of 440 individuals from a randomly selected sample of 1000 adult residents of a Swedish county. The type, material, and quality of the restorations were recorded for all root-filled teeth by using clinical examination and intraoral clinical photographs. Periapical status, root-filling quality, and marginal bone loss were evaluated on panoramic radiographs. The association between periapical status and type, material, and quality of the restorations was analyzed by using the χ2 test and logistic regression. RESULTS: No difference in the frequency of apical periodontitis (AP) between teeth restored with resin composite, laboratory-fabricated crowns, or amalgam (29.7%, 26.2%, and 43.1%, respectively) of adequate quality was found. No association between AP and resin composite restorations was disclosed; however, there was an association between AP and inadequate root-filling quality and marginal bone loss >1/3 of the root length. CONCLUSIONS: The results did not indicate any association between AP and resin composite restorations. Neither the type nor the material of the restoration was of significance for periapical status as long as the quality was adequate.

  • Long term trends of fish after liming of Swedish streams and lakes
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 1352-2310. ; 146, s. 245-251
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thousands of Swedish acidified lakes and streams have been regularly limed for about 30 years. Standard sampling of fish assemblages in lakes and streams was an important part of monitoring the trends after liming, i.e. sampling with multi-mesh gillnets in lakes (EN 14757) and electrofishing in streams (EN 14011). Monitoring data are nationally managed, in the National Register of Survey test-fishing and the Swedish Electrofishing Register. We evaluated long-term data from 1029 electrofishing sites in limed streams and gillnet sampling in 750 limed lakes, along with reference data from 195 stream sites and 101 lakes with no upstream liming in their catchments. The median year of first liming was 1986 for both streams and lakes. The proportion of limed stream sites with no fish clearly decreased with time, mean species richness and proportion of sites with brown trout (Salmo trutta) recruits increased. There were no consistent trends in fish occurrence or species richness at non-limed sites, but occurrence of brown trout recruits also increased in acid as well as neutral reference streams. Abundance of brown trout, perch (Perca fluviatilis) and roach (Rutilus rutilus) increased significantly more at limed sites than at non-limed reference sites sampled before and after 1986. The mean species richness did not change consistently in limed lakes, but decreased in low alkalinity reference lakes, and fish abundance decreased significantly in limed as well as in non-limed lakes.

  • Treatment with head-lift exercise in head and neck cancer patients with dysphagia: results from a randomized, controlled trial with flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Supportive Care in Cancer. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0941-4355 .- 1433-7339. ; 31:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: This randomized study aimed to evaluate the effects of the Shaker head-lift exercise (HLE) to improve dysphagia following oncologic treatment for head and neck cancer (HNC). Methods: Patients with dysphagia following oncologic treatment for HNC were randomly assigned to intervention (n = 23) or control (standard dysphagia management, n = 24) groups. Swallowing was evaluated at baseline and at 8-week follow-up using flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) and self-perceived swallowing with the Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10). Analysis was performed regarding secretion, initiation of swallow, residue after swallowing, and penetration/aspiration. Results: Few statistically significant differences were found in the FEES analysis. Some improvement of self-perceived swallowing function was found in both groups. Adherence to training was high. Conclusions: This randomized study regarding the effect of the HLE demonstrated that swallowing outcome measures used in assessment of FEES did not improve in patients treated with radiotherapy for patients with dysphagia following HNC.

  • Blood pressure measurement--an observational study of 21 public health nurses
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Nursing. - : Wiley. - 1365-2702 .- 0962-1067. ; 10:2, s. 189-194
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to observe how public health nurses perform blood pressure measurement. Structured observations were made of 21 randomly selected public health nurses while they performed three blood pressure measurements. The public health nurses used an overall correct method for blood pressure measurement. Five nurses out of 21 used the Tri-cuff but the soft cuff was most frequently used. When choosing the breadth of the cuff, 10 nurses decided by eye and not by the marks on the cuff. To ensure a completely correct method additional information is needed by nurses.

  • Counseling Hypertensive patients: an observational study of 21 public health nurses
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Clinical Nursing Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1054-7738 .- 0000-0000. ; 10:4, s. 369-386
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study observed the public health nurse's and the patient's activity level during blood pressure measurement and the kind of nonpharmacological treatment that was given. Using the Nurse Practitioner Rating Form, three structured observations were made of 21 public health nurses at their offices at health care centers. The nurses were randomly selected from 22 health care centers in Southern Sweden. The public health nurses used nonpharmacological treatment at 18 out of 63 visits, mainly diet and physical activity. The nonpharmacological conversation had a psychosocial aspect at 15 observations. During the visits, most of the facts and advice concerned somatic aspects of health promotion. Almost all patients were asked about their medication. At more than half of the observations, the nurses and the patients met at the same medium or high communication level. The nurses need training and information about nonpharmacological treatment to practice health promotion in hypertension care.

  • Interkollegialt lärande för handledning och bedömning av examensarbete
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Högskolepedagogisk debatt. - 2000-9216. ; :1, s. 27-37
