  • Adapting remote labs to learning scenarios : Case studies using VISIR and remotElectLab
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Revista Iberoamericana de Tecnologias del Aprendizaje. - : Education Society of IEEE (Spanish Chapter). - 1932-8540. ; 9:1, s. 33-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Remote laboratories are an emergent technological and pedagogical tool at all education levels, and their widespread use is an important part of their own improvement and evolution. This paper describes several issues encountered on laboratorial classes, on higher education courses, when using remote laboratories based on PXI systems, either using the VISIR system or an alternate in-house solution. Three main issues are presented and explained, all reported by teachers, that gave support to students' use of remote laboratories. The first issue deals with the need to allow students to select the actual place where an ammeter is to be inserted on electric circuits, even incorrectly, therefore emulating real-world difficulties. The second one deals with problems with timing when several measurements are required at short intervals, as in the discharge cycle of a capacitor. In addition, the last issue deals with the use of a multimeter in dc mode when reading ac values, a use that collides with the lab settings. All scenarios are presented and discussed, including the solution found for each case. The conclusion derived from the described work is that the remote laboratories area is an expanding field, where practical use leads to improvement and evolution of the available solutions, requiring a strict cooperation and information-sharing between all actors, i.e., developers, teachers, and students.

  • Nourishment for the piggy bank : facilitation of external financing in incubators
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Transfer and Commercialisation. - : Inderscience. - 1470-6075 .- 1741-5284. ; 10 3-4, s. 354-374
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we argue that incubators facilitate access to external financing for their incubatees. Incubators use a wide range of activities to facilitate the accessing of external financing from public and private sources. We have grouped these into two sets of activities. The general activities aim to develop the conditions for external financing through information, education of incubatees, network-building and lobbying activities. The specific activities aim to assist the individual incubatee in their pursuit of external finance through help in application procedures, establishing need for capital, making contacts with the best public or private investor, etc. Based on the survey data, we have also shown that it is more common for incubatees to attract external capital compared to non-incubator firms. The incubatees seem especially successful in attracting public capital. The incubatees also attract more private external capital, however, the observed frequency of private capital in the incubatees are low.

  • The study of urban form in Sweden
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Urban Morphology. - : INT SEMINAR URBAN FORM. - 1027-4278. ; 13:2, s. 121-127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Early research on urban form in Sweden was undertaken before the First World War. After the Second World War research was influenced by the major criticisms levelled at comprehensive urban renewal and suburban mass housing. These criticisms were particularly on the ground that values embodied in the traditional built environment were being ignored. Increased interest in the study of historical urban fabrics was associated with the development of methodologies reliant on the concepts of typology and morphology. These development were dependent on the activities of individual researchers until the very recent development of wider co-ordinating research organizations.

  • In Situ Growth of CuWO4 Nanospheres over Graphene Oxide for Photoelectrochemical (PEC) Immunosensing of Clinical Biomarker
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sensors. - : MDPI. - 1424-8220. ; 20:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Procalcitonin (PCT) protein has recently been identified as a clinical marker for bacterial infections based on its better sepsis sensitivity. Thus, an increased level of PCT could be linked with disease diagnosis and therapeutics. In this study, we describe the construction of the photoelectrochemical (PEC) PCT immunosensing platform based on it situ grown photo-active CuWO4 nanospheres over reduced graphene oxide layers (CuWO4@rGO). The in situ growth strategy enabled the formation of small nanospheres (diameter of 200 nm), primarily composed of tiny self-assembled CuWO4 nanoparticles (2-5 nm). The synergic coupling of CuWO4 with rGO layers constructed an excellent photo-active heterojunction for photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing. The platform was then considered for electrocatalytic (EC) mechanism-based detection of PCT, where inhibition of the photocatalytic oxidation signal of ascorbic acid (AA), subsequent to the antibody-antigen interaction, was recorded as the primary signal response. This inhibition detection approach enabled sensitive detection of PCT in a concentration range of 10 pgmL(-1) to 50 ng.mL(-1) with signal sensitivity achievable up to 0.15 pgmL(-1). The proposed PEC hybrid (CuWO4@rGO) could further be engineered to detect other clinically important species.

  • Influence of Patterns on Mechanical Properties of Ultrasonically Welded Joints in Copper Substrate and Wire
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Metals and Materials International. - : Springer Nature. - 1598-9623 .- 2005-4149.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ultrasonic wire welding is considered a method of choice for creating reliable interconnects in electronics industry including aerospace, batteries and electric vehicles. In this paper, ultrasonic welding tests between EVR252 copper wire and substrate are carried out. Novel pattern morphologies are machined on substrates to explore its influence on mechanical properties of welded joint. Patterns are divided into three different categories e.g., original surface, vertical and horizontal shapes. Cracks, microstructure strength and tensile properties of welded joint are studied and its joining mechanism is analysed. Compared with the reference substrate (S1), the welded joint performance of the longitudinal patterns (S2, S3, S4) has been improved, among which the longitudinal pattern (S4) has the most significant improvement (+ 15%). Likewise, the performance of transverse pattern (S5) welded joints is relatively poor (− 16%). The microstructural analysis using SEM has revealed predominant joint strength on Cu wire surface while maintaining rock-like and compact properties of S4 substrate. Upper side of wire-harness compactness is frequently observed due to vertical direction of patterns on substrate and also increases the strength of welded joint. Values of failure load, failure displacement and failure energy absorption were increased by 7.9%, 72% and 35% for S2, 6.1%, 75% and 42% for S3 and 15%, 87% and 113% for S4 compared to S1. Failure modes of welded joints are mainly characterized into: 1-poor ductility or rupture (no deformation) failure in vertical 3-line pattern joints 2-cylindrical deep holes failure in vertical 3-line zigzag pattern joints and 3-bulging effect failure in horizontal 3-line zigzag pattern joints. Point and line scans EDS measurement were performed to investigate weaker and stable trends of different locations in welded joints. In S4 substrate, 17.9% carbon content at the position of welded joint was investigated, leading to content of less oxides and fraction impurities. However, S1 weld zone contains 38.7% carbon content which can weaken welded joint and reduce durability. • Streaming Graph Partitioning: An Experimental Study
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the VLDB Endowment. - : ACM Digital Library. - 2150-8097. ; 11:11, s. 1590-1603
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Graph partitioning is an essential yet challenging task for massive graph analysis in distributed computing. Common graph partitioning methods scan the complete graph to obtain structural characteristics offline, before partitioning. However, the emerging need for low-latency, continuous graph analysis led to the development of online partitioning methods. Online methods ingest edges or vertices as a stream, making partitioning decisions on the fly based on partial knowledge of the graph. Prior studies have compared offline graph partitioning techniques across different systems. Yet, little effort has been put into investigating the characteristics of online graph partitioning strategies. In this work, we describe and categorize online graph partitioning techniques based on their assumptions, objectives and costs. Furthermore, we employ an experimental comparison across different applications and datasets, using a unified distributed runtime based on Apache Flink. Our experimental results showcase that model-dependent online partitioning techniques such as low-cut algorithms offer better performance for communication-intensive applications such as bulk synchronous iterative algorithms, albeit higher partitioning costs. Otherwise, model-agnostic techniques trade off data locality for lower partitioning costs and balanced workloads which is beneficial when executing data-parallel single-pass graph algorithms.

  • Sugar Detection Threshold After Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy in Adolescents
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Obesity Surgery. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0960-8923 .- 1708-0428. ; 28:5, s. 1302-1307
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Obesity in young people is one of the most serious public health problems worldwide. Moreover, the mechanisms preventing obese adolescents from losing and maintaining weight loss have been elusive. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is successful at achieving long-term weight loss in patients across all age groups, including children and adolescents. Anecdotal clinical observation as well as evidence in rodents suggests that LSG induces a shift in preference of sugary foods. However, it is not known whether this shift is due to a change in the threshold for gustatory detection of sucrose, or whether LSG induces behavioral change without affecting the gustatory threshold for sugar. The objective of this study was to determine whether adolescents who undergo LSG experience a change in their threshold for detecting sweet taste. We studied the sucrose detection threshold of 14 obese adolescents (age 15.3 +/- 0.5 years, range 12-18) who underwent LSG 2 weeks before surgery and at 12 and 52 weeks after surgery. Matched non-surgical subjects were tested on two occasions 12 weeks apart to control for potential learning of the test that may have confounded the results. Seven sucrose concentrations were used and were tested in eight blocks with each block consisting of a random seven sucrose and seven water stimuli. The subjects were asked to report whether the sample contained water or not after they tasted 15 ml of the fluid for 10 s. The bodyweight of the LSG group decreased from 136.7 +/- 5.4 to 109.6 +/- 5.1 and 86.5 +/- 4.0 kg after 12 and 52 weeks, respectively (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference after surgery in taste detection threshold of patients after LSG (p = 0.60), and no difference was observed comparing the taste detection threshold of the LSG group with the non-surgical controls (p = 0.38). LSG did not affect the taste detection threshold for sucrose, suggesting that the shift in preference for sugary foods may be due to factors other than fundamental changes in taste sensitivity.

  • Vertical sleeve gastrectomy in adolescents reduces the appetitive reward value of a sweet and fatty reinforcer in a progressive ratio task
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases. - : Elsevier BV. - 1550-7289. ; 15:2, s. 194-199
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Adolescent obesity is challenging to treat even if good multidisciplinary approaches are started early. Vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) is an effective intervention for long-term weight loss, but the underlying mechanisms that result in reduced calorie intake are controversial. Anecdotal evidence from the clinic and evidence in rodents after VSG suggest a decrease in the reward value of high-calorie dense foods. Objectives: To determine changes in appetitive behavior of candies (high in sugar and fat) after VSG in adolescents with obesity. Setting: University hospital. Methods: Sixteen adolescents with obesity (age 15.3 ±.5 yr) who had VSG and 10 control patients (age 13.8 ±.6 yr) who had not undergone surgery were studied. Both groups completed a progressive ratio task by clicking a computer mouse on a progressive ratio schedule to receive a candy high in sugar and fat. In the task, patients were required to expend an increasing amount of effort to obtain the reinforcer until they reach a breakpoint (measure of the reward value of the reinforcer). The task was performed before VSG and 12 and 52 weeks after VSG. Results: The VSG group's bodyweight decreased from the baseline 136.6 ± 5.1 to 110.9 ± 5.2 to 87.4 ± 3.7 kg after 12 and 52 weeks, respectively (P <.001). The median breakpoint for candies decreased after VSG from the baseline 320 (160–640) to 80 (50–320) to 160 (80–560) after 12 and 52 weeks, respectively (P =.01). Breakpoints for the control patients did not change (480 [160–640] versus 640 [280–640], P =.17). Conclusion: VSG resulted in a reduction in the reward value of a candy, as suggested by the reduced amount of effort adolescents were prepared to expend to obtain the high-sugar and high-fat candy. The effect was most pronounced 12 weeks after surgery but was largely maintained at 1 year. Long-term attenuation of appetitive behavior may be the key to weight loss and weight loss maintenance after VSG in adolescents. © 2018
