  • Quality control for cone beam CT devices: The EFOMP guidelines for assessing image quality and dose
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: ECR 2016.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Learning objectives: Learn about an objective, practical and unifying methodology for quality control of all cone beam CT (CBCT) modalities. Understand the choice and justification of the proposed tests Learn how to perform the tests on a routine basis. Background: Current guidelines for quality control of CBCT devices consider the available applications (dental, radiotherapy, interventional radiology and guided surgery) as different entities [1], [2]. However, the data acquisition and reconstruction methods are similar. Henceforth, the evaluation parameters for image quality and dose can be unified.Findings and procedure details: The parameters used for image quality assessment are uniformity, accuracy of density values (or Hounsfield units where appropriate), geometrical evaluation, noise, low-contrast resolution (including contrast-to-noise ratio) and high-contrast resolution. Detailed procedures using free software and commercially available test phantoms are described in the guidelines, which are currently under external review. Conclusion: These guidelines include the minimum tests that should be performed to ensure reliable, safe and consistent performance of CBCT devices. This minimum has been sought to guarantee compatibility with all manufacturers, all cone beam modalities and existing national and international documents.

  • Growth hormone receptor deficiency in mice results in reduced systolic blood pressure and plasma renin, increased aortic eNOS expression, and altered cardiovascular structure and function
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHYSIOLOGY-ENDOCRINOLOGY AND METABOLISM. - : American Physiological Society. - 0193-1849 .- 1522-1555. ; 292:5, s. E1418-E1425
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To study the role of the growth hormone receptor (GHR) in the development of cardiovascular structure and function, female GHR gene-disrupted or knockout (KO) and wild-type (WT) mice at age 18 wk were used. GHR KO mice had lower plasma renin levels (12 ± 2 vs. 20 ± 4 mGU/ml, P < 0.05) and increased aortic endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) expression (146%, P < 0.05) accompanied by a 25% reduction in systolic blood pressure (BP, 110 ± 4 vs. 147 ± 3 mmHg, P < 0.001) compared with WT mice. Aldosterone levels were unchanged, whereas the plasma potassium concentration was elevated by 14% ( P < 0.05) in GHR KO. Relative left ventricular weight was 14% lower in GHR KO mice ( P < 0.05), and cardiac dimensions as analyzed by echocardiography were similarly reduced. Myograph studies revealed a reduced maximum contractile response in the aorta to norepinephrine (NE) and K+ ( P < 0.05), and aorta media thickness was decreased in GHR KO ( P < 0.05). However, contractile force was normal in mesenteric arteries, whereas sensitivity to NE was increased ( P < 0.05). Maximal acetylcholine-mediated dilatation was similar in WT and GHR KO mice, whereas the aorta of GHR KO mice showed an increased sensitivity to acetylcholine ( P < 0.05). In conclusion, loss of GHR leads to low BP and decreased levels of renin in plasma as well as increase in aortic eNOS expression. Furthermore, GHR deficiency causes functional and morphological changes in both heart and vasculature that are beyond the observed alterations in body size. These data suggest an important role for an intact GH/IGF-I axis in the maintenance of a normal cardiovascular system.

  • Seasonal variation in expression of markers in the vitamin D pathway in prostate tissue
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Cancer Causes and Control. - : Springer. - 0957-5243 .- 1573-7225. ; 23:8, s. 1359-1366
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: Recent studies suggest variation in genes along the vitamin D pathway, as well as vitamin D receptor (VDR) protein levels, may be associated with prostate cancer. As serum vitamin D levels vary by season, we sought to determine whether the expression of genes on the vitamin D pathway, assessed in prostate tumor tissue, do the same.METHODS: Our study incorporates mRNA expression data from 362 men in the Swedish Watchful Waiting cohort, diagnosed between 1977 and 1999, and 106 men enrolled in the US Physicians' Health Study (PHS) diagnosed between 1983 and 2004. We also assayed for VDR protein expression among 832 men in the PHS and Health Professionals Follow-up Study cohorts. Season was characterized by date of initial tissue specimen collection categorically and by average monthly ultraviolet radiation levels. One-way analysis of variance was used to examine variation in the expression levels of six genes on the vitamin D pathway-VDR, GC, CYP27A1, CYP27B1, RXRα, CYP24A1-and VDR protein by season, adjusted for age at diagnosis and Gleason grade. Variation was also examined separately among lethal and nonlethal cases.RESULTS: Tumor expression levels of the six genes did not vary significantly by season of tissue collection. No consistent patterns emerged from subgroup analyses by lethal versus nonlethal cases.CONCLUSIONS: Unlike circulating levels of 25(OH) vitamin D, expression levels of genes on the vitamin D pathway and VDR protein did not vary overall by season of tissue collection. Epidemiological analyses of vitamin D gene expression may not be biased by seasonality.

  • Den välsituerade flickan : Om den svenska flickscoutrörelsens historia 1910-1940
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Well-Situated Girl is the first academic study of the history of Swedish Girl Scouting. Through a qualitative and interpretive method, which has its methodological home in the hermeneutic tradition, and with theoretical inspiration from Simone de Beauvoir’s work The Second Sex the aim of the thesis is to conceptualize Girl Scouting as girls’ and women’s history.  The thesis analyzes the emergence of scouting for girls,  the establishment of Girl Scouting in Sweden during the years prior to World War I and the specific kind of vision, version and process of girlhood and womanhood that the movement enabled and encouraged during the interwar period. Particular focus is put both on the movement’s textual construction and representations of the Girl Scout and Girl Scouting as a lived experience. Furthermore, how the intertwined character of the textual and scouting as a lived experience facilitated a new way for girls to conceive, embody their girlhood and live as girls.Through a thematic analysis of five different aspects of the movement – phenomenon, organization, activity, identity and culture - the thesis concludes that Girl Scouting created a space where girls and women could meet in an intergenerational, international and work-oriented context which suggested and created an opportunity for girls to move from a historically constructed object position to a partially self-constructed subject position.

  • Automatic Classification of Wood Defects using Support Vector Machines
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics). - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1611-3349 .- 0302-9743. - 3642023444 ; 5337, s. 356-367
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses the issue of automatic wood defect classification. We propose a tree-structure support vector machine (SVM) to classify four types of wood knots by using images captured from lumber boards. Simple and effective features are proposed and extracted by first partitioning the knot images into 3 distinct areas, followed by applying an order statistic filter to yield an average pseudo color feature in each area. Excellent results have been obtained for the proposed SVM classifier that is trained by 800 wood knot images. Performance evaluation has shown that the proposed SVM classifier has resulted in an average classification rate of 96.5% and false alarm rate of 2.25% over 400 test knot images. Our future work includes more extensive tests on large data set and the extension of knot types.

  • En fiende till civilisationen : manlighet, genusrelationer, sexualitet och rasstereotyper i svensk filmkultur under 1920-talet
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The setting for this study is Swedish film culture of the 1920s, which has been studied with a focus on representations of masculinity and gender relations according to four themes: 1) children and youth 2) fatherhood and love 3) sexuality and popularity 4) ethnicity and racial stereotyping.      The rise of new consumer culture in the first decades of the 20th century created turmoil between traditional and modern values, not least when it came to conceptions of gender. Studies on masculinity have often directed its efforts towards writing a history of ideals, bound by the concept of hegemonic masculinity; a concept that exclude women as insignificant for the social construction of masculinity. One ambition with this thesis has been to counter the long-lasting concept of hegemonic masculinity, and in the process, try to build a bridge between men and women studies.        One other ambition has been question the canonisation of the “Golden Age” of Swedish silent filmmaking by introducing the concept of “the pluralism of film”, and by using a vast material including: Swedish feature films, reviews, articles from fan magazines and trade paper, screen plays, censorship cards, official reports, etc; thereby circumventing the concept of film as “art” in order to focus on film as representation in a more reliably way.      One conclusion is the revelation of the diversity that surrounds social constructions of masculinity and gender relations in both film culture and society. In addition, Swedish film of the 20s hardly contained any male characters that upheld the hegemonic ideal, giving way to a more prominent presence of strong female characters, often in the shape of the New Woman. Women did as well have a great influence on the formation of masculinity. However, a notion of a Swedish normative masculinity became visible when contrasted with numerous racial stereotypes, such as malicious representations of Black people and Travellers. The emphasis on gender relations, rather than on ideals, has also contributed to a wider understanding of gender, where criteria such as generation, class, ethnicity and sexuality ought to be included.         When it comes to the canonisation of the “Golden Age”, a strong notion exists about the integrated use of nature in film narratives as being a Swedish national trait, when in fact this could be linked only to a few films. If one would point out a trait that permeates Swedish film of the 1920s, it would not be the use of nature, but instead the flagrant racism and xenophobia.

  • Greening cities - To be socially inclusive? About the alleged paradox of society and ecology in cities
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Habitat International. - : Elsevier BV. - 0197-3975 .- 1873-5428. ; 64, s. 41-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Greening cities, namely installing new parks, rooftop gardens or planting trees along the streets, undoubtedly contributes to an increase in wellbeing and enhances the attractiveness of open spaces in cities. At the same time, we observe an increasing use of greening strategies as ingredients of urban renewal, upgrading and urban revitalization as primarily market-driven endeavours targeting middle class and higher income groups sometimes at the expense of less privileged residents. This paper reflects on the current debate of the social effects of greening using selected examples. We discuss what tradeoffs between social and ecological developments in cities mean for the future debate on greening cities and a socially balanced and inclusive way of developing our cities for various groups of urban dwellers. We conclude that current and future functions and features of greening cities have to be discussed more critically including a greater awareness of social impacts.
