  • The fate of sulphur during oxy-fuel combustion of lignite
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Energy Procedia. - : Elsevier BV. - 1876-6102. ; 1:1, s. 383-390
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This work focuses on the sulphur chemistry in oxy-fuel combustion of lignite. Comparison is made with air-fired conditions, and the main combustion products containing sulphur (ash, SO2, SO3 and H2S) are examined by modelling and experimental data. The conversion of fuel-S to SO2 is lower in oxy-fuel than in air-fuel conditions and the SO2 concentration per unit energy supplied is therefore reduced. The modelling shows that the SO3 concentration is about four times greater than the concentration in air-firing. High SO3 and H2O contents in the oxy-fuel flue gas during wet recycling increase the acid dew-point by 20 to 30 K.

  • The Sulphur Mass Balance in Oxy-Fuel Combustion of Lignite
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 1st OXYFUEL COMBUSTION CONFERENCE: September 8-11, 2009, Cottbus, Germany.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This work presents an experimental study of the sulphur chemistry in oxy-fuel combustion of pulverized lignite. It has been observed that the emission of sulphur dioxide (SO2) by unit energy supplied is lower in oxy-fuel combustion than in air combustion [1-5] but the reason for this is not clear. In order to validate previous work and to clarify this difference the present work compares the amount of emitted SO2 in air and oxy-fuel combustion (wet and dry flue-gas recycle). Furthermore, the amounts of sulphur in the ash and in the water of the flue-gas condenser were determined to make a mass balance and to verify the measured amount of SO2 in the flue gas.

  • Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles as a mean to reduce CO2 emissions from electricity production
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 24th International Battery, Hybrid and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exhibition 2009, EVS 24; Stavanger; Norway; 13 May 2009 through 16 May 2009. - 9781615674558 ; , s. 2614-2624
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this study we have investigated the consequences of integrating plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV:s) in a wind-thermal power system supplied by one quarter of wind power and three quarters of thermal generation. A fleet of PHEV:s with an electricity consumption corresponding to 3%, 12% and 20%of the total electricity consumption has been integrated to the system (i.e. the total electricity consumption remains unaffected while the non-PHEV consumption is 97%, 88% and 80% in the three cases). Four PHEV integration strategies, with different impacts on the total electric load profile, have been investigated by means of a mixed integer model which can model the effects of the new load profiles on the dispatch of the units in the system and, thus, on the CO2-emissions from the system. The study shows that PHEV:s canreduce the CO2-emissions from the power system if actively integrated, whereas a passive approach to PHEV integration (i.e. letting people charge the car at will) is likely to result in an increase in emissions compared to a power system without PHEV load. The model simulations give that CO2 emissions of the power sector are reduced with up to 4.7% compared to a system without PHEV:s. If the reduction in emissions is allocated to the electricity consumed by the PHEV:s, the emissions from generation of this electricity are reduced from 588 kg CO2/MWh (windthermal system without PHEV:s) down to 367 kg CO2/MWh (PHEV:s actively integrated). Under the assumption that electric mode is about 3 times as efficient as standard gasoline operation, emissions from PHEV:s would then be less than half the emissions of a standard car, when running in electric mode.

  • On the possibilities for co-firing biomass with coal for power generation in the EU
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: World Bioenergy 2008 Conference & Exhibition on Biomass for Energy.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The European Union aims at an enhanced use of bioenergy. Co-firing biomass with coal represents an attractive near-term option for electricity generation from renewable energy sources (RES-E). The purpose with this study is to assess the near-term technical potential for biomass co-firing with coal in the existing coal-fired power plantinfrastructure in the EU27 Member States (MS). The technical potential for RES-E from biomass co-firing amounts toapproximately 50-90 TWh/year, which requires a biomass supply of approximately 500-900 PJ/year. The national biomass supply potential is considerably larger than the estimated biomass demand for each MS. However, actuallymeeting the possible co-firing biomass demand will require a substantial increase compared to the present primaryproduction of biomass in many MS. The implementation of biomass co-firing will be influenced by e.g., the availability and cost of different biomass resources as well as related transport and handling issues, the development of policies and competing options. Longer term, the biomass co-firing potential will be influenced by the development of carbon capture and storage. In the future work the RES-E generation from co-firing will be compared to the RES-E targets for 2010. The possibility for biomass import by sea will also be indicated.

  • The potential for biomass co-firing with coal in EU27
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 16th European Biomass Conference & Exhibition - From research to industry and markets, Feria Valencia, Spain, 2-6 June 2008..
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The European Union (EU) aims to increase the use of bioenergy. An increased production of electricity from renewable energy sources (RES-E) is also being promoted within the EU. Biomass co-firing with coal represents an attractive near-term option for increasing the production of RES-E. This study assesses the near-term technical potential for biomass co-firing with coal in the existing coal-fired power plant infrastructure in the EU27 Member States (MS) and relates the potential to the national EU targets for RES-E by 2010. The possible contribution of RES-E from biomass co-firing to the RES-E target for 2010 for EU27 as a whole (expressed in absolute numbers) is about 10%. However, the contribution from the estimated co-firing potential to the gap between current RES-E levels and the RES-E target for 2010 is about 20-33% for EU27 (depending on assumptions made). For some MS the potential contribution is large enough to fill the gap. Biomass co-firing with coal has the potential to play an important role when increasing the amount of RES-E in EU27. However, considering how little time remains, it is unlikely that co-firing can actually make a considerable contribution to the 2010 RES-E targets.
