  • Sámi traditional medicine and complementary and alternative medicine : a descriptive study of use within the Sámi population of Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Circumpolar Health. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1239-9736 .- 2242-3982. ; 82:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditional medicine has been practised for millennia in the Sámi population, based on a Sámi worldview and cosmology, which includes natural remedies, prayers, drums and yoik singing. During the Christianisation of the Sámi during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, these practices were condemned. In recent years, however, a revival of Sámi culture has occurred and so has the practice of Sámi traditional medicine (STM) and the use of complementary alternative medicine (CAM). The aim of this study is to map the prevalence and use of STM and CAM among Sámi in Sweden today. The study population consisted of 3641 Sámi from the whole of Sweden, who had participated in the population-based cross-sectional survey Sámi Health on Equal Terms (SámiHET) in 2021. Our results show that women are more prone to use both STM and CAM than men and that younger persons are more likely to use STM and CAM than elderly persons. STM is more often used in the northern parts of Sápmi compared to the southern parts as well as a lower use of CAM in the north. This might be due to the stronger Sámi identity and easier access to traditional Sámi healers/helpers in the north as well as limited access to CAM services.

  • The influence of interfacial ageing and temperature on the coalescence of oil droplets in water
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Colloids and Surfaces A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0927-7757 .- 1873-4359. ; 374:1-3, s. 96-101
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the coalescence behaviour of two single droplets of industrial kerosene oil is an important precursor for predicting the stability of a concentrated kerosene emulsion system. In taking such an approach, distinct differences in the dynamic coalescence of fresh and aged binary droplets of analytical and technical grade kerosene was observed which we believe to be important with regard to the stability of concentrated systems. It was shown from induction time measurements (the time from first contact to rupture of the thin film separating the droplets) that the analytical grade kerosene binary droplets are considerable more stable than the technical grade at higher temperature (up to 65 degrees C) but the analytical grade shows a gradual decrease in stability up to 65 degrees C. At 75 degrees C, both grades of kerosene droplets remained stable to coalescence. After this initial rupture, coalescence proceeded as a series of dynamic oscillations and further insight into the fusion behaviour could be obtained by analysis of the change in the surface area of the aggregated droplets as a function of time. The longer induction times correlated with the more vigorous post rupture oscillations (less damping resulting from an increase in interfacial elasticity) which were recorded during the drop fusion. These experiments reveal preliminary steps in the coalescence of oil droplets where measurements from first contact to final damped equilibrium are quantified. This aspect of coalescence has not been well represented in the earlier literature. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Predicting and elucidating the etiology of fatty liver disease: A machine learning modeling and validation study in the IMI DIRECT cohorts
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: PLoS Medicine. - San Francisco : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1549-1676 .- 1549-1277. ; 17:6, s. 1003149-1003149
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is highly prevalent and causes serious health complications in individuals with and without type 2 diabetes (T2D). Early diagnosis of NAFLD is important, as this can help prevent irreversible damage to the liver and, ultimately, hepatocellular carcinomas. We sought to expand etiological understanding and develop a diagnostic tool for NAFLD using machine learning. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We utilized the baseline data from IMI DIRECT, a multicenter prospective cohort study of 3,029 European-ancestry adults recently diagnosed with T2D (n = 795) or at high risk of developing the disease (n = 2,234). Multi-omics (genetic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic) and clinical (liver enzymes and other serological biomarkers, anthropometry, measures of beta-cell function, insulin sensitivity, and lifestyle) data comprised the key input variables. The models were trained on MRI-image-derived liver fat content (

  • Teaching modelling using digital tools in secondary technology education : Teachers’ experiences
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings PATT37. ; , s. 95-102
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Models can be used for communicating and for sharing information. In technology education in Swedish compulsory school, pupils have long created models using simple materials to test their designs, such as cardboard and wooden sticks. Models have also been used by teachers to assess pupils’ technology knowledge in particular areas (Elmer & Davies, 2000). We live in a world where technology is highly developed, where digital technology plays an important role and where models are created in digital environments (Kress, 2010). Technology as a school subject undergoes the same development, which can be seen in the technology syllabus (Skolverket, 2011). However, there is a lack of research on technology teachers’ experiences of teaching modelling using digital tools. According to previous research, teachers’ experiences of a phenomenon (Marton & Tsui, 2004) along with their pedagogical and technological knowledge (Mishra & Koehler, 2006) affect how they plan their lessons. The aim of this pilot study is therefore to examine secondary school teachers’ experiences of teaching modelling using digital tools, thereby contributing to understanding this area of technology education. The study takes a phenomenographic approach (Marton & Booth, 1997) and is based on semi-structured interviews with teachers. The interviews are analyzed, focusing on how technology teachers experience teaching modelling using digital tools. Their different experiences are divided into categories. So far, four categories have been identified: a) Modelling using digital tools as inspiration, b) Handling the modelling software as the object of learning, c) Handling 3D printing as the object of learning and d) Modelling for teaching technological content. A tentative result is that teachers have different aims and purposes when teaching modelling using digital tools.
