  • Phenotypic and genetic variation in emergence and development time of a trimorphic damselfly
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Evolutionary Biology. - : Wiley. - 1010-061X .- 1420-9101. ; 18:6, s. 1464-1470
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although colour polymorphisms in adult organisms of many taxa are often adaptive in the context of sexual selection or predation, genetic correlations between colour and other phenotypic traits expressed early in ontogeny could also play an important role in polymorphic systems. We studied phenotypic and genetic variation in development time among female colour morphs in the polymorphic damselfly Ischnura elegans in the field and by raising larvae in a common laboratory environment. In the field, the three different female morphs emerged at different times. Among laboratory-raised families, we found evidence of a significant correlation between maternal morph and larval development time in both sexes. This suggests that the phenotypic correlation between morph and emergence time in the field has a parallel in a genetic correlation between maternal colour and offspring development time. Maternal colour morph frequencies could thus potentially change as correlated responses to selection on larval emergence dates. The similar genetic correlation in male offspring suggests that sex-limitation in this system is incomplete, which may lead to an ontogenetic sexual conflict between selection for early male emergence (protandry) and emergence times associated with maternal morph.

  • Charged particle multiplicity in three-jet events and two-gluon systems
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; C:44, s. 311-331
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The charged particle multiplicity in hadronic three-jet events from Z decays is investigated. The topology dependence of the event multiplicity is found to be well described by a modified leading logarithmic prediction. A parameter fit of the prediction to the data yields a measurement of the colour factor ratio C-A/C-F with the result C-A/C-F = 2.261 +/- 0.014(stat). +/- 0.036(exp). +/- 0-066(theo). in agreement with the SU(3) expectation of QCD. The quark-related contribution to the event multiplicity is subtracted from the three-jet event multiplicity resulting in a measurement of the multiplicity of two-gluon colour-singlet states over a wide energy range. The ratios r = N-gg(s)/Ng (g) over bar (s) of the gluon and quark multiplicities and r((1)) = N'(gg)(s)/N'g (g) over bar (s) of their derivatives are compared with perturbative calculations. While a good agreement between calculations and data is observed for r((1)), larger deviations are found for r indicating that non-perturbative effects are more important for r than for r((1)).

  • Production of Xi(0)(c) and Xi(b) in Z decays and lifetime measurement of Xi(b)
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; C:44, s. 299-309
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The charmed strange baryon Xi(c)(0) was searched for in the decay channel Xi(c)(0) -> Xi(-)pi(+), and the beauty strange baryon Xi(b) in the inclusive channel Xi(b) -> Xi(-)l(-)(nu) over barX, using the 3.5 million hadronic Z events collected by the DELPHI experiment in the years 1992-1995. The Xi(-) was reconstructed through the decay AT, using a constrained fit method for cascade decays. An iterative discriminant analysis was used for the Xi(c)(0) and Xi(b) selection. The production rates were measured to be f(Xi c)(0) x BR(Xi(c)(0) -> Xi(-)pi(+) = (4.7 +/- 1.4(stat.) +/- 1.1(syst.)) x 10(-4) per hadronic Z decay, and BR(b -> Xi(b))xBR(Xi(b) -> Xi(-)l(-)X) = (3.0 +/- 1.0(stat.) +/- 0.3(syst.)) x 10(-4) for each lepton species (electron or muon). The lifetime of the Xi(b) baryon was measured to be tau(Xi b) = 1.45(-0.43)(+0.55)(stat.)+/- 0.13(syst.) ps. A combination with the previous DELPHI lifetime measurement gives tau(Xi b) = 1.48(-0.31)(+0.40)(stat.)+/- 0.12(syst.) ps.

  • Postgrowth annealing of (Ga,Mn) As under As capping: An alternative way to increase T-C
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 86, s. 112501-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In situ postgrowth annealing of (Ga,Mn)As layers under As capping is adequate for achieving high Curie temperatures (T-C) in a similar way as ex situ annealing in air or in N-2 atmosphere practiced earlier. Thus, the first efforts give an increase of T-C from 68 to 145 K after 2 h annealing at 180 degrees C. These data, in combination with lattice parameter determinations and photoemission results, show that the As capping acts as an efficient sink for diffusing Mn interstitials.

  • Evaluation of CPC-collector designs for stand-alone, roof- or wall installation
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Solar Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0038-092X .- 1471-1257. ; 79:6, s. 638-647
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An asymmetrically truncated non-tracking compound parabolic concentrator type collector design concept has been developed. The collector type has a bi-facial absorber and is optimised for northern latitudes. The concept is based on a general reflector form that is truncated to fit different installation conditions. In this paper collectors for stand-alone, roof and wall mounting are studied. Prototypes of six different collectors have been built and outdoor tested. The evaluation gave high annual energy outputs for a roof mounted collector, 925 MJ/m2, and a stand-alone collector with Teflon, 781 MJ/m2, at an operating temperature of Top = 75 °C. A special design for roofs facing east or west was also investigated and gave an annual energy output of 349 (east) and 436 (west) MJ/m2 at Top = 75 °C. If a high solar fraction over the year is the objective, a load adapted collector with a high output during spring/fall and a low output during summer can be used. Such a collector had an output of 490 MJ/m2 at Top = 75 °C. Finally a concentrating collector for wall mounting was evaluated with an estimated annual output of 194 MJ/m2 at Top = 75 °C. The concentrator design concept can also be used for concentrators for PV-modules.

  • Autoantibodies Against Soluble and Immobilized Human Recombinant Tissue Transglutaminase in Children with Celiac Disease.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition - Jpgn. - : Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health). - 1536-4801 .- 0277-2116. ; 41:3, s. 322-327
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: The conformation of tissue transglutaminase might influence the performance of immunoassays to detect autoantibodies from patients with celiac disease. The present study investigated how the exposure of tissue transglutaminase kept in a liquid phase and fixed to a solid support affected the binding of immunoglobulin (Ig)A and IgG autoantibodies in children with untreated and treated celiac disease. Methods: Included were 73 untreated celiac disease children, 50 controls and 80 children with treated celiac disease. IgA and IgG antitissue transglutaminase were measured with solid phase enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) and liquid phase radioligand binding assays. For IgG antitissue transglutaminase detection with radioligand binding assays antihuman IgG and protein A were used. IgA endomysial autoantibodies were measured by indirect immunofluorescence. Results: Both ELISA and radioligand binding assays detected IgA antitissue transglutaminase in 65 of 73 untreated celiac disease children and in 2 of 50 controls. One additional control child was detected with radioligand binding assays. Endomysial autoantibodies were present in 62 of 73 celiac disease children and in 2 of 50 controls. IgG antitissue transglutaminase was detected with both ELISA and radioligand binding assays in 40 of 73 untreated celiac disease children and in 2 of 50 controls. Radioligand binding assays using protein A detected 20 of 73 additional untreated celiac disease children and one control child with increased IgG antitissue transglutaminase. In treated celiac disease children, 21 of 80 were IgA antitissue transglutaminase positive with radioligand binding assays, 3 of 80 with ELISA, whereas none had endomysial autoantibodies. Conclusions: No qualitative differences between radioligand binding assays and ELISA in IgA or IgG antitissue transglutaminase binding from untreated celiac disease children was demonstrated. However, discrepancies in the binding of IgA antitissue transglutaminase from a subgroup of treated celiac disease children indicated that alterations of tissue transglutaminase might occur on fixation of the antigen. Protein A used for radioligand binding assays seemed not to assess IgG autoantibodies exclusively. IgA antitissue transglutaminase detection in screening of childhood celiac disease can be performed either by ELISA or radioligand binding assays because the two assays are interchangeable.

  • Beam modeling and verification of a photon beam multisource model.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Medical Physics. - : Wiley. - 0094-2405. ; 32:6, s. 1722-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dose calculations for treatment planning of photon beam radiotherapy require a model of the beam to drive the dose calculation models. The beam shaping process involves scattering and filtering that yield radiation components which vary with collimator settings. The necessity to model these components has motivated the development of multisource beam models. We describe and evaluate clinical photon beam modeling based on multisource models, including lateral beam quality variations. The evaluation is based on user data for a pencil kernel algorithm and a point kernel algorithm (collapsed cone) used in the clinical treatment planning systems Helax-TMS and Nucletron-Oncentra. The pencil kernel implementations treat the beam spectrum as lateral invariant while the collapsed cone involves off axis softening of the spectrum. Both algorithms include modeling of head scatter components. The parameters of the beam model are derived from measured beam data in a semiautomatic process called RDH (radiation data handling) that, in sequential steps, minimizes the deviations in calculated dose versus the measured data. The RDH procedure is reviewed and the results of processing data from a large number of treatment units are analyzed for the two dose calculation algorithms. The results for both algorithms are similar, with slightly better results for the collapsed cone implementations. For open beams, 87% of the machines have maximum errors less than 2.5%. For wedged beams the errors were found to increase with increasing wedge angle. Internal, motorized wedges did yield slightly larger errors than external wedges. These results reflect the increased complexity, both experimentally and computationally, when wedges are used compared to open beams.
