  • End-of-life treatments in pediatric patients at a government tertiary cancer center in India
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Palliative Medicine. - : Mary Ann Liebert Inc. - 1096-6218 .- 1557-7740. ; 21:7, s. 907-912
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: The primary objective of this study was to describe demographics and end-of-life treatments of children with cancer at a government tertiary cancer center in India. Methods: A retrospective review was undertaken of medical charts of all children younger than 18 years, who died as inpatients while undergoing treatment at the pediatric oncology department between April and September 2016. Data were collected on demographics, diagnosis, treatments, survival, palliative care involvement, and symptoms at end of life. Results: There were 44 pediatric oncology patients who died in the hospital during the study period. The most frequent diagnoses were hematological malignancies (n = 29). Tumor-specific treatment was given to 38/44 (86%) patients in the last 30 days of life, and 13 patients in the last day of life or 1 day before. Of all deaths, 23/44 (52%) occurred within 30 days of admission to the pediatric ward and 34/44 (77%) within 90 days. Of the 44 patients, 25 (57%) were referred to palliative care. The median number of days between referral and death was 14 (0-78) days. Frequent symptoms documented were bleeding (11/44), dyspnea (10/44), pain (7/44), seizures (7/44), and delirium (5/44), with each patient having one or more of these symptoms. Only patients with a palliative care referral received opioid analgesics or benzodiazepines at the end of life. Conclusions: This study highlights the demographics of suffering, death, and end-of-life care in children with cancer at a government tertiary cancer center in India.

  • Selective CO Production by Photoelectrochemical CO2 Reduction in an Aqueous Solution with Cobalt-Based Molecular Redox Catalysts
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1944-8244 .- 1944-8252. ; 12:37, s. 41644-41648
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Light-driven CO2 reduction was performed in a two-electrode photoelectrochemical cell (PEC) composed of a Co4O4 cubane complex-modified BiVO4 photoanode and a cobalt phthalocyanine complex-modified carbon cloth (cc) cathode. The hybrid electrodes assembled by the simple physical absorption of hydrophobic molecular catalysts exhibit long-term stability in an aqueous solution. Under 1 sun AM 1.5 G illumination, simultaneous oxygen and CO evolution at an approximately 2:1 ratio were achieved in a CO2-saturated NaHCO3 aqueous solution with high faradic efficiency up to 87% for CO production. Control experiments revealed a crucial role of immobilized molecular catalysts in promoting the activity and selectivity for both half-reactions. A solar-to-CO conversion efficiency of 0.44% was realized at a cell potential of 0.8 V, which is the highest efficiency for CO2 to CO conversion in PEC devices based on noble-metal-free materials.

  • Teaching optimization of thermal and fluid machinery in the post-pandemic era
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceeding of the ASME Turbo Expo 2023. - : AMER SOC MECHANICAL ENGINEERS. - 9780791886991
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Higher education has been crucially impacted by the pandemic during the past years. Despite the associated challenges, a wide portfolio of digital literacies has been developed for the delegates. This work evaluates the introduction of digital tools into in-person education. The “Process Optimization” course at Mälardalen University is reformed to operate in a digitally enhanced classroom mode. The course covers a variety of optimization methods applied on thermal and fluid machinery such as systems of compressors, pumps and heat exchangers, heat and power plants, aircraft trajectories and propulsion systems. The constructive alignment is presented to illustrate links between learning objectives, learning activities, and assessment tasks. A series of digital tools is introduced to elevate learning experience prior, during, and after class time. Those comprise digital quizzes, a video channel, polls, a digital whiteboard, and a digital forum. The course is systematically instrumented, yielding a vast set of statistics for evaluating the effectiveness of digital tools as well as engagement levels for learners. The contribution of digitalization into standardizing the formative and summative assessment is discussed. It is observed that digital tools complement the participation into pre- and post-classroom activities. An interactive and digitalized course evaluation activity is also designed. This allowed learners and educators to productively exchange feedback in an inclusive manner. The accrued data provides insight into the impact of digitalization on the delivery of an applied engineering course. Lessons learnt comprise quantitative and qualitative outcomes arising from the perspectives of both learners and teachers. Guidelines and recommended practices are provided for the penetration of digital tools into synchronous and asynchronous learning activities. This paper identifies opportunities as well as space for improvement arising from the penetration of digital tools into the new era for education.

  • Critical stress for twinning nucleation in CrCoNi-based medium and high entropy alloys
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Acta Materialia. - : PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD. - 1359-6454 .- 1873-2453. ; 149, s. 388-396
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The CrCoNi-based medium and high entropy alloys (MHEAs) have drawn much attention due to their exceptional mechanical properties at cryogenic temperatures. The twinning critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) is a fundamental parameter for evaluating the strength-ductility properties of MHEAs. Here we construct and apply an extended twinning nucleation Peierls-Nabarro (P-N) model to predict the twinning CRSSes of face-centered cubic (FCC) CrCoNi-based MHEAs. The order of the twinning CRSSes of the selected alloys is CrCoNi > CrCoNiMn > CrCoNiFe > CrCoNiFeMn and the values are 291, 277, 274 and 236 MPa, respectively. These theoretical predictions agree very well with the experimental twinning CRSSes of CrCoNi and CrCoNiFeMn accounting for 260 +/- 30 and 235 +/- 10 MPa, respectively and are perfectly consistent with the strength-ductility properties including yield stress, ultimate tensile stress and uniform elongation for fracture of the FCC CrCoNi-based MHEAs obtained at cryogenic temperatures. The present method offers a first-principle quantum-mechanical tool for optimizing and designing new MHEAs with exceptional mechanical properties.

  • Significant structuring resources in the reading practices of a digital classroom
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Information Technology Education: Research. - : Informing Science Institute. - 1547-9714 .- 1539-3585. ; 15, s. 131-165
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since reading and writing digitally demand partially different competencies, there is a change in some of the premises of related educational practices. This study aims to contribute to the knowledge of educational reading practices by scrutinizing how literacy events evolve in a digital classroom where each student has a personal digital device (1:1), iPads in this study. Our study is grounded in sociocultural theories of learning and focuses on the structuring resources utilized by students, namely the notion of multiple ongoing activities and the ways in which specific re- sources take precedence in shaping these activities. One class of 13–14 year-old students was studied for a week across several subjects through video-recordings and observations. The find- ings imply that the students moved among vast array of reading practices. However, the main structuring resource is a strong focus on task-solving and the practice of schooling, which mainly builds on principles emanating from traditional text. It is only occasionally that structuring re- sources that also include the opportunities associated with digital technology are utilized. This indicates the importance of further studies on how educational practices could be organized to scaffold the basis of traditional reading comprehension as well as other approaches required in digital environments.

  • Fluorescence-Based Blood Coagulation Assay Device for Measuring Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY. - : ACS American Chemical Society. - 0003-2700 .- 1520-6882. ; 83:1, s. 319-328
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The measurement of blood clotting time is important in a range of clinical applications such as assessing coagulation disorders and controlling the effect of various anticoagulant drug therapies. Clotting time tests essentially measure the onset of clot formation which results from the formation of fibrin fibers in the blood sample. However, such assays are inherently imprecise due to the highly variable nature of the clot formation process and the sample matrix. This work describes a clotting time measurement assay which uses a fluorescent probe to very precisely detect the onset of fibrin clot formation. It uses a microstructured surface which enhances the formation of multiple localized clot loci and which results in the abrupt redistribution of the fluorescent label at the onset of clot formation in both whole blood and plasma. This methodology was applied to the development of an activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) test in a lateral flow microfluidic platform and used to monitor the effect of heparin dosage where it showed linearity from 0 to 2 U/mL in spiked plasma samples (R-2=0.996, n = 3), correlation against gold standard coagulometry of 0.9986, and correlation against standard hospital aPTT in 32 patient samples of 0.78.

  • Different Munc13 isoforms function as priming factors in lytic granule release from murine cytotoxic T lymphocytes.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Traffic. - : Wiley. - 1398-9219 .- 1600-0854. ; 14:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to fuse lytic granules (LGs) with the plasma membrane at the immunological synapse, cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) have to render these LGs fusion-competent through the priming process. In secretory tissues such as brain and neuroendocrine glands, this process is mediated by members of the Munc13 protein family. In human CTLs, mutations in the Munc13-4 gene cause a severe loss in killing efficiency, resulting in familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis type 3, suggesting a similar role of other Munc13 isoforms in the immune system. Here, we investigate the contribution of different Munc13 isoforms to the priming process of murine CTLs at both the mRNA and protein level. We demonstrate that Munc13-1 and Munc13-4 are the only Munc13 isoforms present in mouse CTLs. Both isoforms rescue the drastical secretion defect of CTLs derived from Munc13-4-deficient Jinx mice. Mobility studies using total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy indicate that Munc13-4 and Munc13-1 are responsible for the priming process of LGs. Furthermore, the domains of the Munc13 protein, which is responsible for functional fusion, could be identified. We conclude from these data that both isoforms of the Munc13 family, Munc13-1 and Munc13-4, are functionally redundant in murine CTLs.

  • Patterns of fungal diversity in needles, rootlets and soil of endemic Pinus peuce
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Baltic Forestry. - 1392-1355. ; 28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pinus peuce is a five-needle pine native to high-elevation montane habitats of the Balkans. This study aimed to assess the diversity and composition of fungal communities associated with soil, rootlets and living needles of P. peuce at three high-altitude forest sites with different edaphic conditions and stand characteristics in south-eastern Montenegro. In total, 90 samples of each substrate (needles, rootlets and soil) were sampled. DNA amplification using ITS2 rDNA as a marker and high-throughput sequencing resulted in 23,394 high-quality reads, representing 825 fungal taxa. There were 52.5% Basidiomycota, 43.9% Ascomycota and 3.6% Mucoromycotina. There were 118 unique fungal taxa in the rootlets, 230 in soil and 113 in the needles, and only 8 taxa were shared. The most common fungi in rootlets were Rhizopogon mohelensis (11.0%), Suillus americanus (8.4%), and R. fallax (6.9%), in soil - Phlebiopsis gigantea (5.1%), Tylospora asterophora (2.9%), and Sollicocossima terricola (2.7%), and in the needles - Dothideomycetes sp. (17.6%), Dothideomycetes sp. (10.7%), and Leotiomycetes sp. (6.5%). The results showed that functional tissues and the rhizosphere soil of P. peuce were inhabited by a high diversity of fungi. Fungal communities in the rootlets and soil were largely determined by the site conditions such as soil properties and forest stand composition.
