• Nucleoside phosphoramidates and related compounds : development of synthetic methods based on H-phosphonate chemistry
• 1999
• Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• In this thesis, studies directed towards development of new synthetic methods for the preparation of nucleotide analogues of potential medical value as antisense, antigene or antiviral agents, are described. Two methods for synthesis of N3'->P5' and P3'->N5' phosphoramidate analogues with the nitrogen atom in bridging position of the internucleotide linkage was developed. Both of them make use of the readily available H-phosphonate monoesters as starting materials and permit the introduction of multiple modifications at the phosphorus center. In conjunction with these, a simple and efficient method for the preparation of nucleoside H-phosphonothioates, as a starting material for various phosphate analogues was also developed. As part of theses studies, base-induced disproportionation of aryl H-phosphonates was investigated.A new type of prodrugs for AZT, symmetrical phosphoramidates, have been synthesised as potential anti-retroviral agent.

• The self-perceived impact of sexual abuse on daily life and general health - an issue to consider in dental care
• 2024
• Ingår i: Dental Traumatology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1600-4469 .- 1600-9657. ; 40:S2, s. 43-52
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Background/Aim: To analyse, from the perspective of adults with a history of sexual abuse, the impact of the experience on their general health and well-being.Material and Methods: The participants comprised 12 strategically selected informants (10 women), aged 19-56; all sexually abused during child- and/or adulthood. They were interviewed in-depth and encouraged to describe the impact of the sexual abuse on their daily lives. The consequences of sexual abuse on oral health have previously been reported. The interviews were recorded digitally, transcribed verbatim and analysed according to qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach. Results: The overall theme illustrating the latent content was Sexual abuse experience-limiting long-term consequences, always present in body and mind. The first category covering the manifest content was 'A lost foothold', with two subcategories: (i) emotional repercussions and (ii) physical health repercussions. The second category was 'The significance of distance to trauma', with two subcategories (i) keeping a distance and tending to escape and (ii) processing the trauma experience-a struggle towards balance. Conclusions: A history of sexual abuse cannot be understood in isolation: the long-term repercussions pervade daily life. However, after disclosure of the abuse and processing the trauma, it is possible to ameliorate some of the negative effects. In this context, the dental setting emerges as a potentially important venue for disclosure as almost every person, sooner or later, visits the dentist.

• Injection of solid biomass products into the blast furnace and its potential effects on an integrated steel plant
• 2014
• Ingår i: Energy Procedia. - : Elsevier BV. - 1876-6102. ; , s. 2184-2187
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• This study is to investigate different types of biomass products' injection into the blast furnace (BF) to replace pulverized coal injection (PCI). The biomass products covered in the study are charcoal, torrefied material and wood pellets on the basis of Swedish forests. The modelling work has been performed in a specialized BF model. The modelling results show that charcoal has the significant effects on the BF operation. PCI can be replaced fully by charcoal, and only limited amount of torrefied material and wood pellets can be injected into BF. For the studied BF, the annual CO2 emission reduction potential from the replaced amount of PCI when injecting charcoal, torrefied material and wood pellets are about 1140 kton, 260 kton and 230 kton, respectively. In addition, a possible energy saving can be achieved for charcoal injection. A slightly higher P content in the hot metal may occur when injecting torrefied material.

• Sowerby’s Beaked Whales (Mesoplodon bidens) in the Skagerrak and Adjacent Waters: Historical Records and Recent Post-Mortem Findings
• 2022
• Ingår i: Oceans. - : MDPI AG. - 2673-1924. ; 3:3, s. 250-267
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• In contrast to sparse historical observational records, five Sowerby’s beaked whales (SBW) stranded and died in Swedish waters between 2015 and 2020. Here we summarize historical records of SBWs in the Skagerrak basin and adjacent waters. The three recent stranding events from Sweden are described, and the post-mortem findings, including diet analysis, from the five SBWs are presented. Of 30 historical records of SBWs observations since 1869, 13 (43%) were documented between 2010 and 2021, and records between July and November were the most frequent. The recent stranding events occurred in October 2015 (n = 1), August 2019 (n = 3) and July 2020 (n = 1). Four of the SBWs were examined through necropsy, and one was sampled in the field. They were all sub-adults and included a single female and four males. The causes of death were emaciation, euthanasia due to traumatic injury, and live stranding of undetermined cause. Two SBWs each had a focal bone lesion consistent with osteomyelitis. Other findings included pox-like dermatitis, trauma, focal granulomas in a lymph node and intestine, and ulceration of the stomach. CT scans were performed on the heads of two animals, with inconclusive results. Three SBWs had hard parts in the gastrointestinal tract that mainly consisted of otoliths from several fish species. An eDNA-analysis confirmed and supplemented the diet analysis, revealing 17 fish species in total, including species not previously described as prey for SBW, such as Pleuronectidae spp. The apparent increase in observational records since 2010 may indicate a shift in SBW distribution or changing threats to these animals. Our results support and expand theories on SBW movements and provide data on the biology and health of this poorly known species, which are valuable for conservation and legislation efforts.

• Influence of the shape of surgical lamps on the airflow and particle distribution in operating rooms
• 2018
• Ingår i: Proceedings of Roomvent & Ventilation 2018. June 02-05, 2018; Espoo, Finland.
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• Operating room ventilation plays a significant role in reducing bacteria carrying particles concentration and preventing post-operative infections. The ventilation airflow may be disturbed by objects and heat loads and their effectiveness in reducing bacteria concentration can be compromised. Surgical lamps are one of the major disturbances in an operating room. This study numerically investigated the influence of lamp shapes on airflow patterns and dispersion of airborne bacteria. Two different shapes of lamps were studied: a closed-shape and an open-shape lamp. The simulation was performed based on the physical configuration of two operating rooms ventilated respectively by laminar airflow and temperature controlled airflow. Results show that the closed-shape lamp severely obstructs the airflow and results in high bacteria concentration in the laminar airflow, whereas the open-shape lamp has a negligible impact on the particle dispersion. The temperature controlled airflow is less sensitive to obstructions and maintains a clean surgical site with both types of lamps.
