  • SegBo : A Database of Borrowed Sounds in the World’s Languages
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 12th Language Resources and Evaluation Conference. ; , s. 5316-5322
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phonological segment borrowing is a process through which languages acquire new contrastive speech sounds as the result of borrowing new words from other languages. Despite the fact that phonological segment borrowing is documented in many of the world’s languages, to date there has been no large-scale quantitative study of the phenomenon. In this paper, we present SegBo, a novel cross-linguistic database of borrowed phonological segments. We describe our data aggregation pipeline and the resulting language sample. We also present two short case studies based on the database. The first deals with the impact of large colonial languages on the sound systems of the world’s languages; the second deals with universals of borrowing in the domain of rhotic consonants.

  • Quinone based conducting redox polymers for electrical energy storage
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Elektrokhimiya. - : MAIK NAUKA/INTERPERIODICA. - 0424-8570. ; 53:1, s. 11-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conducting redox polymers (CRPs) constitute a promising class of materials for the development of organic matter based batteries with the potential to overcome the main limitations connected to this type of rechargeable battery systems including low conductivity and dissolution problems. In this report we show that the potential of quinones can be effectively tuned into the conducting region of polypyrrole (PPy), both in water based solutions and in acetonitrile, which is a prerequisite for profitable combination of the two units. We also present a device where both anode and cathode are made from PPy substituted with different quinone pendant groups and where good rate performance is achieved without any conductivity additives thus providing support for the hypothesized synergetic effect of a conducting polymer backbone and a covalently attached redox active pendant group. This device constitutes, to the best of our knowledge, the first all-CRP based battery reported to date.

  • Structural basis of Cfr-mediated antimicrobial resistance and mechanisms to evade it
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nature Chemical Biology. - : Springer Nature. - 1552-4450 .- 1552-4469. ; 20:7, s. 867-876
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The bacterial ribosome is an essential drug target as many clinically important antibiotics bind and inhibit its functional centers. The catalytic peptidyl transferase center (PTC) is targeted by the broadest array of inhibitors belonging to several chemical classes. One of the most abundant and clinically prevalent resistance mechanisms to PTC-acting drugs in Gram-positive bacteria is C8-methylation of the universally conserved A2503 nucleobase by Cfr methylase in 23S ribosomal RNA. Despite its clinical importance, a sufficient understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying Cfr-mediated resistance is currently lacking. Here, we report a set of high-resolution structures of the Cfr-modified 70S ribosome containing aminoacyl- and peptidyl-transfer RNAs. These structures reveal an allosteric rearrangement of nucleotide A2062 upon Cfr-mediated methylation of A2503 that likely contributes to the reduced potency of some PTC inhibitors. Additionally, we provide the structural bases behind two distinct mechanisms of engaging the Cfr-methylated ribosome by the antibiotics iboxamycin and tylosin.

  • Issues in Estimation and Application of Long Distance Travel Demand Models
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Forecasts of the demand for long distance travel areessential for many decisions, such as infrastructureinvestments, operators´management policies etc. Manyresearch issues are related to this field, and the purpose ofthis thesis is to contribute to some of them. Paper I Modellingchoice of flight and booking class–a study using Stated Preference and Revealed Preference data goes into theinteresting issue of modelling departure time and ticket typechoices. The data used in the estimation process were acombination of revealed preference (RP) data and statedpreference (SP) data. A model was developed to estimaterecapture and buyup to improve the SAS (Scandinavian AirlinesSystem) yield management system. Paper II Endogenoussegmentation applied to long distance business trips in Swedenis related to the possibilities of identifying market segmentsthat differ in travel behaviour. The procedure of endogenoussegmentation has been explored to identify different tastesegments in a population. The results indicate that the methodis an efficient way of identifying market segments andoutperforms the traditional manual segmentation when modelefficiency is the objective. The restrictive assumption of independent distributed randomcomponents in the logit model utility function can be relaxedby finding a suitable nesting structure. The task ofestablishing such structures, another crucial issue in traveldemand model development, is further analysed in papers IIIExploring the HEV model to improve nesting structures of modelsfor Swedish long distance private trips and paper IV Enhancingmodel structure and treatment of incomplete geocodes in SAMPERSlong distance models. In paper III a technique to identifyscale parameters for separate alternatives is used. Based onthis, different nesting structures are tested and the resultsare compared with the old mode choice model for long distancetrips in Sweden. This paper leads to paper IV, where similarnesting structures were tested on the long distance mode anddestination choice model in the SAMPERS system. Paper IV alsodeals with data problems, as the destination coding wasincomplete. A final model formulation, related to these issuesis suggested. To turn the view a bit beside the pure estimationtechniques and structures used in the estimation of differentmodels, paper V Quantifying uncertainties in the SAMPERS longdistance forecasting model system considers uncertaintiesrelated to the fact that models are estimated on a sample of apopulation. The bootstrap method, a computer intensivestatistical method, can be used to compute statistical measuresfor very complex systems, without being bound to an analyticalapproach. The bootstrap method is applied on the SAMPERSsystem, and numerical results are presented on different modelsystem output levels.

  • Assessment of suspected bone metastases : CT with and without clinical information compared to CT-guided bone biopsy
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Acta Radiologica. - 0284-1851 .- 1600-0455. ; 38:5, s. 890-895
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of CT with and without clinical information as compared to CT-guided bone biopsy in the assessment of suspected bone metastases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study comprised 51 consecutive patients with suspected bone metastases who had undergone CT-guided bone biopsies with an eccentric drill system. CT of the targets, clinical information, and histopathology were scored separately as malignant, uncertain or benign. The results of CT alone and CT in combination with clinical information were compared to the results of histopathology. RESULTS: Histopathology diagnosed 45/51 lesions (88%), 23 as malignant and 22 as benign. CT correctly depicted 17 of these 23 malignant lesions. The remaining 6 malignant lesions were CT-scored as uncertain (n = 5) or benign (n = 1). CT correctly depicted only 3 of the 22 benign lesions. The remaining 19 benign lesions were CT-scored as malignant (n = 2) or uncertain (n = 17). When uncertain CT scores were combined with clinical scores, the true-positive and true-negative results for malignancy increased from 44% to 82%. CONCLUSION: In most cases, CT in combination with clinical information gives enough information about the nature-malignant or benign-of a skeletal lesion. In uncertain cases, diagnostic accuracy can be improved by means of CT-guided bone biopsy.

  • Tooling cardboard for smart reuse testing a parametric tool for adapting waste corrugated cardboard to fabricate acoustic panels and concrete formwork
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Architecture in the age of the 4th industrial revolution. - : eCAADe. - 9789491207181 ; , s. 769-778
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study presented in this paper is part of ongoing research that is exploring how digital design tools and technologies can support waste cardboard reuse for manufacturing architectural elements in a context of scarcity. For this study, we explore the use of a parametric design tool to design and fabricate three different architectural components using waste cardboard sheets: acoustic panels and two types of formwork for concrete. This design tool maximizes the smart reuse of a waste material and aids in the fabrication process by outputting instructions for cutting, scoring, and folding. This paper also demonstrates how parametric design tools can help reuse non-standard (dimensions variable) waste materials, mediating between measurable material conditions and desired material targets for designs.

  • Apoptosis and Mobilization of Lymphocytes to Cardiac Tissue Is Associated with Myocardial Infarction in a Reperfused Porcine Model and Infarct Size in Post-PCI Patients
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Oxidative medicine and cellular longevity. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1942-0994 .- 1942-0900. ; 2018, s. 1975167-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is the most severe outcome of coronary artery disease. Despite rapid reperfusion of the artery, acute irrigation of the cardiac tissue is associated with increased inflammation. While innate immune response in STEMI is well described, an in-depth characterization of adaptive immune cell dynamics and their potential role remains elusive. We performed a translational study using a controlled porcine reperfusion model of STEMI and the analysis of lymphocyte subsets in 116 STEMI patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). In the animal model, a sharp drop in circulating T lymphocytes occurred within the first hours after reperfusion. Notably, increased apoptosis of circulating lymphocytes and infiltration of proinflammatory Th1 lymphocytes in the heart were observed 48 h after reperfusion. Similarly, in STEMI patients, a sharp drop in circulating T lymphocyte subsets occurred within the first 24 h post-PCI. A cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) evaluation of these patients revealed an inverse association between 24 h circulating T lymphocyte numbers and infarction size at 1-week and 6-month post-PCI. Our translational approach revealed striking changes in the circulating and tissue-infiltrating T lymphocyte repertoire in response to ischemia-reperfusion. These findings may help in developing new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for coronary diseases.

  • Atmospheric pollution in rapidly growing industrial cities: spatial policies and land use patterns
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Economic Geography. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1468-2702 .- 1468-2710. ; 17:3, s. 607-634
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the optimal and equilibrium distribution of industrial and residential land in a given region. The trade-off between agglomeration and dispersion forces in the form of pollution from stationary forces, production externalities and commuting costs, determines the emergence of industrial and residential clusters across space. In this context, we define two kinds of spatial policies that can be used in order to close the gap between optimal and market allocations. More specifically, we show that the joint implementation of a site-specific environmental tax and a site-specific labor subsidy can reproduce the optimum as an equilibrium outcome. The methodological approach followed in this article allows for an endogenous determination of land use patterns.
