    • We consider a Rayleigh model[Foschini and Gans, Wirel. Pers. Commun. 6, 311 (1998)] for the Shannon capacity characterising wireless information transfer in a network of antennae. In this model, the capacity C is a linear statistic of the channel matrix of the network. We use this fact to calculate the variance var[C] of the Shannon capacity. We find that the expected value 〈C〉 of the Shannon capacity is typical, that is the coefficient of variation √var[C]/〈C〉 is small.

    • A study of the crystallographic structure and magnetic properties of the double perovskites Ba2MnMoO6 and Sr2MnMoO6 in polycrystalline form has been carried out by means of neutron powder diffraction (NPD) and magnetization measurements. The Rietveld analysis of room temperature data shows that the Mn2+ and Mo6+ ions are B-site ordered, i.e. the structure is a NaCl-type ordered double perovskite. Ba2MnMoO6 crystallizes in the cubic space group Full-size image (<1 K) (a=8.1680(1)) and Sr2MnMoO6 crystallizes in the space group P42/n (a=7.9575(5), c=7.9583(9)). Bond valence sum (BVS) calculation revealed that these compounds have the valency pair of {Mn2+(3d5;t32ge2g), Mo6+(4d0)}. The magnetic measurements suggest that these compounds transform to an antiferromagnetic state below 10 K.

    • The influence of ambient concentrations of carbon dioxide on the atmospheric corrosion of magnesium has been studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), revealing the development and growth of corrosion products. The surfaces investigated by AFM were prepared by ultramicrotomy, using a diamond knife, to generate a smooth finish without using water or lubricant. Sputter-deposited Mg films were also studied with mechanically polished samples used to monitor the overall corrosion process. The exposures were performed at 22.0 degreesC in a synthetic environment with precise control of relative humidity (95%) and CO2 (0 or 350 ppm). Corrosion is localized in the absence of CO2 and is related to noble inclusions in the metal matrix. After corrosion product removal, relatively deep pits are evident. In contrast, pitting is inhibited in the presence of CO, with relatively uniform corrosion product development; further, the noble inclusions have no effect on the distribution of corrosion. The inhibitive effect of CO2 is also observed in the long-term exposures, showing that CO2 reduces the average corrosion rate. Mechanisms are introduced to explain the effects of CO2 and the roles of the noble inclusions on the corrosion behaviour.

    • We present a simple method for the optical manipulation and spectroscopy of colloidal silver nanoparticles in aqueous solution using optical tweezers combined with dark-field microscopy. Because of their localized plasmon resonances, single trapped metal nanoparticles can be used as efficient near-field optical probes, with potential applicability in surface-enhanced spectroscopy, near-field microscopy, and biochemical sensing schemes. As a proof of principle, we study the near-field optical interaction between a trapped and an immobilized Ag nanoparticle.

  • How to measure the Mueller matrix of liquid-crystal cells

    • The Mueller matrix is the transfer matrix in the Stokes algebra that describes the polarization of natural light. This matrix is very versatile for the task of characterizing the optical properties of liquid-crystal cells, since it can be used for comparison with theoretical calculations, the determination of material parameters and the modelling of the cell as an optical building block for technological use. We have constructed a Mueller-matrix spectrometer, with the ability to perform fast, dynamic measurements of the Mueller matrix of small areas of liquid-crystal cells throughout the visible range. To illustrate the potential of the instrument, dynamic measurements on a ferroelectric-liquid-crystal cell are presented and analysed. The optical measurements indicate that there is an asymmetry between the up and the down state, tilted smectic layers and polarization reversal initiated at the boundaries.
